I sincerely hope you're being sarcastic here.

I'm not a fan of this woman. at all. But if she put a little weight on - along with some motherfucking muscle - she could pull off Wonder Woman. I think that she may need a little more....um...BOLDNESS to her, though. As she is, she doesn't strike me as a very super heroine-esque kind gal.

But then, the other options weren't terribly appealing either. Sandra Bullock? Come on.

Though Catherine Zeta-Jones is one hot motherfucking woman, she wouldn't convince me.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I going to have to agree with Lehah, here. If kids can't watch TV or browse the internet alone, or listen to music or read magazines that their parents don't know about, how are they going to be influenced by them? Shitty parenting is the cause of damn near every problem society has. It's not any of the vices or social diseases in particular.

Yeah, but not all kids subscribe to it now anyway. I'm going to stick by my guns and assume that that's because their parents aren't shitty.

It's been proven that children can be molded into what they will be become later on in life. If young boys are treated by their parents like a girl because the parents wanted a girl, that boy could become gay as a result, or at least rather in touch with his feminine side. Now, I don't want people twisting my words to say that "my parents treated me such-and-such and look how I turned out." Note that I said can, not will. The parents' treatment of their child/children won't necessarily affect their mentality, but it might. Parents maybe not be able to change the ideal of standard beauty, but they can affect how their child reacts to that ideal and whether the child is influenced by it or not.

Does this really even belong in the Media Centre any more?

There has to be some reason why society doesn't affect certain people in certain ways, even though everyone is exposed to the exact same shit. Care to venture a guess what that reason is, Devo?

I don't think we're trying to say that they're the only thing to influence a child. We're just saying that they are the largest influence. No, we can't blame everything on the parents, mostly because many things are beyond their control. But things like social prejudices and good manners, among other things, can be blamed on them.

First of all, there is NO WAY you can follow your child around 24 hours a day and monitor everything they see, hear and read. It's just not possible. Period. Especially once they get older than, say, 12 and start doing things without constant parental supervision.

Secondly, unless some of you completely skipped over a very important developmental phase, you need to realize that there comes a time when almost all children rebel against authority. A lot of kids will do and believe the extreme opposite from whatever their parents have tried to teach them, because suddenly parents are idiots and everything they say must be challenged.

Telling your daughter she's beautiful and that she doesn't have to be anorexic to be beautiful only works for a certain amount of time. After kids hit a certain age, they're going to be much more heavily influenced by their friends and the media than they are by anything their parents say. It's a sad day when that happens, so you really have to take advantage of every opportunity when they're small, because once they hit that magic 14, you're the village idiot in their minds.

Also, this misconception about the way a woman's body is "supposed" to look is everywhere. You turn on the TV and everyone you see is a size 2. You stand in line at the grocery store and there on the covers of all the magazines are women with perfect faces and bodies. It's everywhere. Your kids are going to see it and be affected by it, unless you lock them up in the cellar. And that's a fact.

Our society's unrealistic expectations with regard to women's bodies and shitty parenting are two entirely different subjects.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

So why doesn't everyone bow to the wills of society, Alice? What part of one's development protects from that?

And here I thought that cocaine and/or heroin addiction was primarily responsible for that chick's staggering weight loss!

I saw someone mention Rachel Leigh Cook. If she played Wonder Woman, I would not hesitate to go see it. Because Rachel Leigh Cook is extremely hot. Like it would even matter if she fit the role perfectly or if the movie stayed relatively true to the source materials.

How ya doing, buddy?

I think that if you went to a high school and interviewed all the girls, 97% of them would say that they view themselves as overweight and/or ugly.

Fortunately, many women (and maybe men - I don't really know since I'm not one) begin to accept their bodies and generally like themselves more as they mature. But almost all teenage girls carry in their hearts a self-loathing that can only come from the unattainable expectations set for them by the media.

And that adminoishes you from trying? Or talking? Or explaining things to the child in a more adult fashion?

While this is indeed a natural stage in growth, I fail to see how that exoerates anyone from explaining things to their children. I don't blame Lindsay Lohan for women dying their hair red, breast implants, shitty movies or bad singing. Why would her being unhealthy and thin mean that your children would follow suit?

If you had to blame someone, blame the people that photoshop out Lohan's freckles or backhair or frownlines or slightly-smaller-tits. Be realistic instead of simply acting like Donald Sutherland in Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and pointing and screaming at something you don't like.

This coming from the 37 year old woman who's a MILF, comes to a board filled with 18-25 year old internet people and more or less expects guys to drool/wank/worship her.

Or is that a misconception about men?

More fuel for my argument that the media is trying to destroy all optimism. Stupid, good-for-nothing media, tainting our minds with thoughts of inadequacy and depressing us with information regarding the mad things of society.

Good point. OK so let's get Rachel Leigh Cook into the Wonder Woman outfit and let's make sure the story is well written and does stay somewhat true to the source material and that they hire a good director. Like it even matters that she isn't 5'11". How's that.

I invite anyone who is arguing with me to raise a girl, then come back and tell me how much good their talks and constant encouragement did once their daughter hit 14.

And I never said you should stop trying. No matter what obstacles you face as a parent, it's your job in life to never stop encouraging them and trying to counteract the damage done to them by the media.

But expecting any other outcome just isn't realistic. These are impressionable children, not mature adults. You can call these girls "stupid", but it's kinder and more accurate to call them "immature."

The best you can do is try to comfort yourself in the knowledge that you tried your best to instill values and self-esteem in your child, and that as she grows and matures, the poison will work itself out of her system.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
