So whoes to say who is gay based on a romantic movie.
Hey, retard, learn to read. No one outside of RABicle said he was gay, and RABicle said the movie made him gay, not the genre. Everyone said the movie sucked. There's a difference. Bad plot and predictability do not mean he's gay for liking it, it just means he likes simple, stupid scripts. If you're going to try and white knight, you should be sure you white knight over the right things. But good hustle.

#5: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
#6: Casablanca
#7: Schindler's List
#9: Seven Samurai
#12: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
#13: Rear Window
#15: 12 Angry Men
#18: City of God
#19: Dr. Strangelove
#22: Psycho

Most of these movies I've wanted to see, I've just never got around to it. My parents didn't really culture me on older movies. With having a Blockbuster Online subscription now, though, I plan on finally catching up on all this stuff sooner than later.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Did you like the movie, "Alone In the Dark"?

Also, regarding my own list:
Spoiler:
13. Rear Window (1954) - Never heard of it
17. The Usual Suspects (1995) - One of those famous movies I just never got around to seeing.
18. Cidade de Deus (2002) - never heard of it.
24. C'era una volta il West (1968) - Heard of it, just never saw it (Once upon a time in the west is the english title)
26. Memento (2000) - Wanted to see it, never did yet though.
28. Lawrence of Arabia (1962) - Meh
29. Sunset Blvd. (1950) - Never heard of it.
30. Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Le (2001) - As Iwata said, Indie kids fapping over this drained any interest I might have had.
35. Vertigo (1958) - Never heard of it.
36. Taxi Driver (1976) - Know nothing of it.

I just meant I never saw it, and I doubt I will anytime soon with all of these other 'must-see' movies backlogged *Shrug*

*Note to self: be exact in your descriptions*

But I know the movie is quite good... and besides I'm not the end all authority of good/bad movies... whoever quotes and responds to this sentence probably contends themselves to be, which would be my guess.

I don't. Really I guess its a crime or something but I know nothing about the movie except its with Robert De Niro, and he's a Taxi Driver.

Ahh well, Internets. Serious Business.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I've worked in the industry for 7 years, and I'm on the cusp of a degree in film/film history, so I know a little about it... but the ultimate source? Hardly. And of all the films on your list, you should really watch... well, all of them. Iwata may dismiss films because the little indie kids like them, but they can be some fantastic bits of filmmaking.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I also saw this one, and I really disliked it. I'm not sure anyone would consider it one of their favorites. I could hardly watch the whole thing without falling asleep.

But then, I also HATED The English Patient. I'll never understand the appeal of some of these movies.
Thank you very much, you've just saved a few hours of my life. I read about City of God with a bit of doubt but was just about to add it to my Netflix queue. Your comment about The English Patient made me reconsider though. I absolutely loathe the English Patient... worst soft porn movie... ever. Horribly overrated... So bad that I actually compare all other movies to it. Anything that approaches the vicinity of English Patient bad is not worth watching.

Anyway, enough about my ranting hate for The English Patient...

Here's my list:

1. #6 Casablanca
2. #9 Shichinin no samurai (Seven Samurai)
3. #13 Rear Window
4. #18 Cidade de Deus (City of God)
5. #19 Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying...
6. #23 Citizen Kane
7. #24 C'era una volta il West (Once Upon A Time In The West)
8. #25 North By Northwest
9. #28 Lawrence of Arabia
10. #29 Sunset Blvd

It seems I've seen quite a bit more movies than most here but I'm still lacking in some of the older films.

Personally I'm really suprised to see The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly rated at #5. I mean, I liked the movie and all and thought it was great but I'd definitely have a very hard time trying to recommend it to anyone.

Another interesting thing is to note how many movies there are on the list from 1999 - 2001, yet so few from after 2001. It really does make you sit and perhaps question the quality of films we've had put out the past few years.

I was speaking idiomatically.

That isn't entirely true. I like some movies that are embraced by indie kids like wes anderson films and fulci films. From previews, indie hyping and word of mouth helped determine that such movies like Amélie and eternal sunshine of the spotless mind aren't my cup of tea. Then again are tastes are completely different in nearly everything and you probably think stuff that i enjoy like Kinski/Herzog and Kar Wai Wong are pure shit.

I also don't see how many people don't care for City of God. It was probably one of the best movies i've seen in the past 5 years.

#19 Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Atomic Bomb

At the risk of sounding uncultured, I don't really have any interest in old black and white movies (I know Schindlers list is balck and white but itisnt in that old camp 50s style) and I certainly don't have a taste for gangstar films, hence the inclusion of the first two godfather films.

Admittedly, it's been a long while since I've seen it, but all I remember was a bunch of poor Brazilian kids running wild through some Rio slum, selling drugs and generally being jackasses.

It really didn't appeal to me at all - I just saw a washed up point.

What did you find appealing about it? I would appreciate it if you could tell me so maybe I can appreciate something MORE in the film. =/

I personally loved the flow of the movie and how it all came together at the end as well as capturing the grittiness of life a hell of a lot better then most movies can. It also oozed more charm then any other movie i have seen in the past 5 years.

The scene with the kids and the shooting is still one of the most painful scenes for me to watch to this day.

#40 Paths of Glory (1957)
#42 To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
#44 Untergang, Der (2004)
#51 Boot, Das (1981)
#65 Rashômon (1950)
#67 Sin City (2005)
#69 The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
#71 Aliens (1986)
#76 The Departed (2006)
#77 Touch of Evil (1958)

Wow, I didn't know I had seen the top 39 on the list. Well, I need to see some of the ones on that list ... others I don't care for.

And, just because someone else did an alternative list... I will too. This one will show that I haven't really seen that many of those movies rated "the best" by the directors and critics.

#3 La Régle du jeu (Renoir)
#5 Tokyo Story (Ozu)
#6 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick)
#7 Battleship Potemkin (Eisenstein)
#7 Sunrise (Murnau)
#13 Rashomon (Kurosawa)
#15 A bout de souffle (Godard)
#15 L'Atalante (Vigo)
#15 The General (Keaton)
#15 Touch of Evil (Welles)

So, I haven't seen 10 out of the top 18. Interesting thread idea.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I can't agree with that statement. It just doesn't make sense. When a movie is good, its good no matter when it was made.

Nothing is going to change about that movie in the future. Sure, a couple weeks IS a bit new, but the past five years... I can't agree with that.

I believe if a movie has been out for at least a couple of years and its still maintained its appeal and fan-base, then it belongs on that list.
