The ten best movies you've NEVER seen.

Using IMDb.com's top 250 list, denote the ten highest-rated movies you've never seen.
  1. #003 - The Godfather, Part II
  2. #008 - Seven Samurai (Shichinin no samurai)
  3. #013 - Rear Window
  4. #015 - 12 Angry Men
  5. #017 - The Usual Suspects
  6. #018 - City of God (Cidade de Deus)
  7. #019 - Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
  8. #021 - Goodfellas
  9. #022 - Citizen Kane
  10. #023 - Psycho

knkwzrd Nov 14, 2006 12:28 AM

I've seen all of these except Borat, which in all honesty has no place on that list anyway.

How do you know Borat doesn't belong on that list if you haven't seen it?

knkwzrd Nov 14, 2006 12:44 AM

Yes, I've really seen all 250 movies on that list, except Borat.

I know Borat doesn't belong there because for anything to be considered THE BEST EVER it has to be out more than a few weeks. Hell, that list probably shouldn't have any films from the past five years on it. Not saying there aren't some excellent recently made films, but they still don't stand a best-of-all-time sort of test.

Dopefish Nov 14, 2006 12:49 AM

It's not a definitive, official best-of-all-time list based on the opinions of movie critics, filmmakers, etc., which is why movies from the last 5 years are on there.

Ayos Nov 14, 2006 12:56 AM

This is depressing.

#1: 1. The Godfather (1972)
#2: 2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
#3: 3. The Godfather: Part II (1974)
#4: 5. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (1966)
#5: 6. Casablanca (1942)
#6: 7. Schindler's List (1993)
#7: 8. Seven Samurai (1954)
#8: 12. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
#9: 13. Rear Window (1954)
#10: 18. City of God (2002)

The top three are my top three. Depressing.

Rockgamer Nov 14, 2006 01:05 AM

You think that's depressing?

1. #1 The Godfather
2. #2 The Shawshank Redemption
3. #3 The Godfather: Part II
4. #4 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
5. #5 The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
6. #6 Casablanca
7. #8 Seven Samurai
8. #10 Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
9. #12 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
10. #13 Rear Window

So as you can see, I'm obviously not a movie person (sorry, TV person right here). Out of the top 30 movies, I've only seen six of them (Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, LotR: FotR, 12 Angry Men, and LotR: TTT).

I poked it and it made a sad sound Nov 14, 2006 01:08 AM

I will never understand why people rank this in their top lists. It was a good movie, but by no means one of the greatest of all time. Is it the twist at the end that gets everyone all WAH WAH WHAT AN AWESOME MOVIE

??

#018 - City of God (Cidade de Deus)
I also saw this one, and I really disliked it. I'm not sure anyone would consider it one of their favorites. I could hardly watch the whole thing without falling asleep.

But then, I also HATED The English Patient. I'll never understand the appeal of some of these movies.

Helloween Nov 14, 2006 01:18 AM

#001 The Godfather
#002 Shawshank Redemption
#003 The Godfather II
#005 The Good, the bad, and the Ugly
#007 Schindler's List
#008 Seven Samurai
#009 Pulp Fiction
#013 Rear Windo
#017 The Usual Suspects
#018 City of God

Yeah, i should really see more movies on this list.

quazi Nov 14, 2006 01:28 AM

1. #22 Citizen Kane (1941)
2. #24 Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
3. #30 Amélie (2001)
4. #31 It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
5. #39 Paths of Glory (1957)
6. #43 The Downfall (2004)
7. #46 The Third Man (1949)
8. #50 Spirited Away (2001)
9. #51 M (1931)
10 #52 Boot, Das (1981)

I don't really agree with this list at all. Any list where Borat is rated better than The Hustler (my all time favorite movie) doesn't seem to make much sense.

guyinrubbersuit Nov 14, 2006 02:20 AM

01. The Good, the Bad, the Ugly
02. Rear Window
03. The Usual Suspects
04. City of God
05. Goodfellas
06. Once Upon a Time in the West
07. North by Northwest
08. Lawrence of Arabia
09. Sunset Blvd.
10. The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain

I've seen quite a few on the list and should see most of them again. I really need to see more Hitchcock movies I've only seen Psycho and the Birds.

Give it a few weeks and it'll fall.

Heh, I didn't think it was possible not to have seen this movie.

1. 9.1 The Godfather (1972) 182,054
3. 8.9 The Godfather: Part II (1974) 103,262
5. 8.8 Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966) 50,126
6. 8.8 Casablanca (1942) 88,712
7. 8.8 Schindler's List (1993) 131,737

13. 8.7 Rear Window (1954) 56,335
17. 8.6 The Usual Suspects (1995) 138,430
18. 8.6 Cidade de Deus (2002)
19. 8.6 Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

Twelve Angry Men is a movie everyone should see, not just for entertainment, but for a bit of cultural perspective. It's possible that it's been ruined to some extent because of all of the imitations in TV and film, but this is one case where I think the original is definitively better than anything that came after it.

I've tried to start Dr Strangelove a couple of times, but I started falling asleep after an hour or so both times.

TheKnightOfNee Nov 14, 2006 02:52 AM

1. #2 The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
2. #3 The Godfather: Part II (1974)
3. #5 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (1966)
4. #6 Casablanca (1942)

8. #15 12 Angry Men (1957)
9. #16 Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
10. #17 The Usual Suspects (1995)

Yeah, this is sad. I've seen the Star Wars movies, and the Lord of the Rings movies. But other than that, there's not much up there I've seen. I've only seen 9 of the top 20, and 13 of the top 30.

JasonTerminator Nov 14, 2006 02:54 AM

Dr. Strangelove has really slow pacing by today's standards. Honestly, it gets better as it progresses, and Dr. Strangelove is an awesome character.

Anyway, my list:

1. #3 - The Godfather Part 2 - I actually have this on DVD, so it's just a matter of me setting aside a chunk of time and watching it.
2. #5 - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly - Never did like westerns, but I've liked other stuff by Clint Eastwood, so I do intend to give it a shot eventually.
3. #6 - Casablanca - This is one of those movies that's been parodied far too much for me to take it seriously.
4. #8 - The Seven Samurai - I've seen other Kurosawa flicks, but I never got around to seeing this. I plan to pick up that new Criterion DVD soon to watch this.
5. #12 - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Once again, just gotta get around to it.
6. #13 - Rear Window - I've honestly only seen three Hitchcock films, and this isn't one of 'em.
7. #15 - 12 Angry Men - Skex seems to endorse this one quite a bit, so I'll give it a shot.
8. #18 - City of God - Not really on my radar at the moment.
9. #22 - Citizen Kane - Honestly, it's hyped up far too much. I haven't watched it for the same reasons many people don't play FF7.
10. #29 - Sunset Blvd. - I don't like Film Noir much.

BTW Skex, I didn't get that far, but I haven't seen It's a Wonderful Life. I'm not Christian though, so that might be a factor.

Admiral Amara Nov 14, 2006 03:05 AM

1. The Godfather
2. The Shawshank Redemption
3. The Godfather II
4. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
5. Schindler's List
6. The Seven Samurai
7. Pulp Fiction
8. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's nest
9. Rear Window
10. 12 Angry Men

Wow. I feel pretty crappy now. I have so many movies to watch!

Vemp Nov 14, 2006 03:08 AM

1. 9.1 The Godfather (1972)
2. 9.1 The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
3. 8.9 The Godfather: Part II (1974)
5. 8.8 Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966)
6. 8.8 Casablanca (1942)
8. 8.7 Shichinin no samurai (1954)
9. 8.7 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
10. 8.7 Rear Window (1954)

and probably 100+ more

Kolba Nov 14, 2006 01:05 PM

My list is mostly movies that I have no immediate inclination to watch:

3. 8.9 The Godfather: Part II (1974) 103,262

I didn't like The Godfather much when I saw it for the first time about 2 years ago.

5. 8.8 Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966) 50,126

Westerns are my least favourite genre.

6. 8.8 Casablanca (1942) 88,712

Die Hard is always on the other channel.

8. 8.7 Shichinin no samurai (1954) 47,783

Well this one I'd like to see, on my Dads recommendation; he says it's awesome. He didn't phrase it like that though.

13. 8.7 Rear Window (1954) 56,335

Hitchcock films never really engage me much.

15. 8.6 12 Angry Men (1957) 42,307

Never heard of it.

18. 8.6 Cidade de Deus (2002) 52,499

I would like to see this one for some glimpse into life in a favela.

19. 8.6 Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) 84,993

Like Skexis, I tried to watch this one not long ago, but was too tired to have patience.

24. 8.6 C'era una volta il West (1968) 27,645

Still my least favourite genre.

25. 8.6 North by Northwest (1959) 47,658

This is one Hitchcock movie that looks pretty good without even having to know more about it.

Anyone who wants to give me a kick up the arse and tell me why I absolutely need to see any of these IMMEDIATELY is more than welcome. I know full well that after watching some of these films I'm going to think afterwards "why the fuck haven't I seen this sooner?!".

Aardark Nov 14, 2006 01:09 PM

3 The Godfather: Part II
31 It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
39 Paths of Glory (1957)
42 To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
47 The Pianist (2002)
52 Boot, Das (1981)
53 The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
54 L.A. Confidential (1997)
58 Hotel Rwanda (2004)
62 Reservoir Dogs (1992)
65. Rashômon (1950)

I've seen most of IMDB Top 150 movies, but there are some that I haven't had time to watch yet. 20% of these are holocaust movies () in which I don't have much interest, and I don't really know much about the others. I have Reservoir Dogs and Rashômon, so I'll probably see them sometime soon.

Locke Nov 14, 2006 01:20 PM

1. The Godfather (1972)
2. The Godfather: Part II (1974)
3. Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966)
4. Casablanca (1942)
5. Shichinin no samurai (1954)
6. Rear Window (1954)
7. 12 Angry Men (1957)
8. Cidade de Deus (2002)
9. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
10. Citizen Kane (1941)

Djinova Nov 14, 2006 01:36 PM

2. 9.1 The Shawshank Redemption *(I'm interested in this one)
3. 8.9 The Godfather: Part II (1974)
5. 8.8 Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il
8. 8.7 Shichinin no samurai *
9. 8.7 Pulp Fiction (watched parts of it)
12. 8.7 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest *
13. 8.7 Rear Window
15. 8.6 12 Angry Men
17. 8.6 The Usual Suspects
18. 8.6 Cidade de Deus

The last movie that really impressed me was "Festen". Sadly, it's on rank 245. It was more art than a normal movie. As with all those list, I can't really agree, especially on the top positions.

Paco Nov 14, 2006 01:54 PM

1. #24 - Once Upon A Time In The West
I'm not sure why I haven't seen this movie yet because everyone tells me that it's a very good western joint. Some of my buddies have it ranked higher than The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

2. #43 - Der Üntergang
I've heard nothing but good things about this film and yet haven't got around to seeing it.

3. #46 - The Third Man
I don't think I've ever heard of this movie.

4. #49 - The Treasure of Sierra Madre
I remember not wanting to see this. I just couldn't picture Bogart as a cowboy.

5. #51 - M
This one is news to me. The concept seems interesting enough just by reading the plot and now I kind of want to see it.

6. #60 - Metropolis
Turn-of-the-century sci-fi never did attract my attention much when I was younger. Now I'm tempted to see this just to see what I missed.

7. #95 - The Apartment
I believe that this is the movie that Wicker Park was based on so I've wanted to see it since because I actually LIKED Wicker Park.

8. #99 - City Lights
Yet another Charlie Chaplin movie that I never got around to watching.

9. #106 - Ran
This one I'm really not happy not having seen. I'm an absolute Kurosawa whore and it's supposed to be up there with Rashômon and Seven Samurai. :/

10. #113 - Le Salaire de la peur (Wages of Fear)
This one's news to me too. I've never heard of it, but it looks interesting enough as well from the plot summary.

EDIT:
I just realized that my next runner up would have been #122 - Oldboy. Yes... I've heard it's good. Why don't one of you send it to me since everyone else on GFF seems to have seen it at least 10 times. :p

Ryuu Nov 14, 2006 02:58 PM

1. #1 The Godfather (1972)*
2. #2 The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
3. #3 The Godfather: Part II (1974)
4. #5 The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly/Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966)
5. #6 Casablanca (1942)*
6. #7 Schindler's List (1993)
7. #8 The Seven Samurai/Shichinin no samurai (1954)
8. #10 Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)*
9. #11 Star Wars (1977)*
10. #12 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
(11. #13 Rear Window (1954)) - Just to show how much I don't watch movies.

*See, I've seen bits and pieces of a couple of the Star Wars movies and Casablanca due to how mainstream the famous clips from the movies are, but I've never actually SEEN them. Same with The Godfather.

I feel like a horrible person...well not really. 'Sup Saving Private Ryan at #64 - Love that movie.

Domino Nov 14, 2006 04:38 PM

5. 8.8 Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966)
6. 8.8 Casablanca (1942)
8. 8.7 Shichinin no samurai (1954)
12. 8.7 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
13. 8.7 Rear Window (1954)
15. 8.6 12 Angry Men (1957)
18. 8.6 Cidade de Deus (2002)
19. 8.6 Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
24. 8.6 C'era una volta il West (1968)
25. 8.6 North by Northwest (1959)

Bah, I barely made it out of the top 20. Most of these films I have no interest in watching. They just don't appeal to me at all. Some of them I've not even heard of.

I actually wasn't that impressed by this one. I mean, it certainly held my attention, but I don't see what the fuss is about.
