No skillz, no direction, no life. Help.
Ok, so let's say that I'm a 21 year old male. I did some travelling after highschool aswell as some other stuff so I am basically just left with the same education level and skill as I had when I ended highschool(meaning basically nothing).
What do I do? This is serious here. I am in a bad situation. Possible even being kicked out of the house if I don't get my act in gear soon. My folks would even be happy if I got a part time job for the summer but all the jobs seem to be taken by students(it already being summer and all). I'm not looking for just some shitty job though, at this point I'm looking to start a career. I was all depressed for a while thinking oh fuck what was I thinking travelling now I am 21 and I have no career, my life is over etc. I've realized that I can no longer waste anymore time thinking like that. I just need to take action. A few things about me: I'm addicted to the internet so I was thinking maybe I should do something with computers. I have no friends and am horrible with people so I'd prefer something where I wouldn't have to deal with many people head on, so sales is out of the question. Basiaclly I need help. What type of work would be recommended? Sorry mods, wasn't sure where this was suppose to go, I didn't see any "Life Issues" type of forum anywhere. Jam it back in, in the dark. fish by any other name wouldn't be fish

There's nowhere I can't reach. Nothing wrong with not being strong
Nothing says we need to beat what's wrong Nothing manmade remains made long That's a debt we can't back out of |
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. fish by any other name wouldn't be fish

Finding a job where you don't have to deal with people head-on may be a little difficult to find. If you don't mind chatting with people, you could become a consultant for an on-line company. Where did you travel to? This could be a plus to place on your resume in order to show that you have experienced life and can relate to people of other cultures.
Do you like playing with the hardware and software of computers? There's supposedly a lot of money in computer repair--depending on what you charge--and there are towns where one computer repair shop holds a monopoly over the whole town. You could start by taking some community college courses in technology and/or become certified in programs such as A+ or C++ (or whatever the current equivalent is to C++). Do you have any other hobbies or preferences? I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() "Oh, for My sake! Will you people stop nagging me? You sound A LOT like a friend of mine whose people skills are really in need of work. But its really up to you. You could go to college and study what you want or dabble in several things until you find something interesting. Job wise though, go for anything that intrests you, just make sure you know what you're doing.
I was speaking idiomatically. |
Another option is joining the military. The US is involved in a conflict and all, but you'd be given "skills" and pay as well as the opportunity to improve your situation and enroll for some higher education after your service obligation. Very likely you could end up in a line of work dealing with computers. If you fear for your safety(sure it's still not completely safe), go for the Navy.
And it's not too late to develop social skills, you just have to cultivate them. The above mentioned solutions are good as well; just be decisive and do something you can enjoy doing. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
If you're looking for a career, is isn't going to be easy with only a high school diploma to your name. I would heartily recommend college, and since you don't know what you want to do in life, clear out all the general education classes in the first couple semesters. By the time you get to a point where you need to choose a major, your interests in classes should be a good enough hint where to start.
Other things to that note. College counselors can be a big help if you need some direction in your life, and can help identify what jobs you might be interested in. Most colleges also have job boards so you can keep easy track of what employment is in the area. Even if it's something as simple as painting houses or lawn care, it's money in the pocket and experience under the belt. FELIPE NO ![]() |
I would definitely go to college. Even a community college will do at first, and if you want to go to a higher place, apply to better schools after your first semester/year. Most companies want to see an advanced degree, and even a bachelor's seems average.
From the people I know, liking the internet does not necessarily mean you'll be "good at computers". A lot of people think that using the internet a lot means they should major in computer science, but that's bull. It takes a completely different set of brain cells to program. Otherwise, really easy computing jobs like secretarial work or data entry will be the only entry level positions you'll be vying for dealing with computers. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
