The Chumscrubber
The Chumscrubber
Hillside is a seemingly perfect, idyllic town of American suburbia. The adults are busy living out their happy lives and pursuing their dreams. The kids, however, are more than happy to spend their school days using drugs. And Troy is the supplier. When Dean, Troy's best friend, discovers his body hanging in his bedroom during his mum's pool party, he doesn't tell anyone, thinking they won't care. Dean is the protagonist of the movie, and he is fairly cynical about his life. He doesn't seem to show any remorse about Troy's death, and his father is more than willing to give him some drugs to help him get better - and use the results as more material for his best-selling book series on human psychology. But that's not the least of his problems. Because Troy is dead, no one at school is getting their drugs anymore. And so to get the last of the stash from Troy's bedroom, the school bully Billy, his girlfriend Crystal and best friend Lee hatch a plan to kidnap Dean's brother Charlie for ransom: Get the drugs, or Charlie dies. Big problem......they kidnap the wrong kid. And so begins a whirlwind of events that basically turns Hillside and it's residents on their heads. Everything seemingly happens for a reason, and it comes together with a bang. --------- I fucking LOVED this movie. It was like a cross between Donnie Darko, The OC, American Beauty, Desperate Housewives. An awesomely dark satire about a rather perfect existence torn to shreds thanks to its unstable residents who do their best to stay sane, it also has a few shocking thriller-esque moments too. It has a rather large all-star cast, too, including Glenn Close as Troy's greiving mother; Carrie-Ann Moss as...get this....a MILF who's got every man in her sights, teen or adult; Ralph Fiennes as the town mayor with an epiphiny and Rita Wilson as the control-freak interior designer he's getting married to; and Jason Issacs as Lee's devout Christian dad. Jamie Bell is outstanding as Dean, and is perhaps the only 'normal' character in the movie. Justin Chatwin is borderline psychotic as Billy, pressuring his girlfriend Cyrstal (Camilla Belle) and rather weak friend Lee (Lou Taylor Pucci) with his every command. And poor bright-eyed Charlie Bratley (Thomas Curtis), the wrongly kidnapped kid is helpless, though somehow mystified by his captors. EVERYONE GO WATCH IT! Jam it back in, in the dark.

I've meant to see this for some time, but the showing at our local indie theater was while I was out of town.
Of course, that didn't keep my from buying the soundtrack, since the score was by James Horner (for some reason...). The songs were a bit blasé, except for "Pure Morning," but the score was powerful medicine for anyone who says Horner only repeats himself. Very quirky and varied, with an off-kilter clarinet/oboe theme to represent, I suppose, the seething angst and drug use in the film. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Moss as a MILF? I'm there - thanks for the heads-up!
How ya doing, buddy?

I randomly caught a trailer for this on Apple's site and wanted to see it. Unsurprisingly it didn't make it to my local cinema, but as soon as the US DVD appeared for pre-order I got I reserved a copy. Watched it as soon as it arrives and I agree, great film, very much worth watching.

This sounds fairly interesting, reminds me of A Scanner Darkly and other PKD stuff.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
