Metal Slug, NOW IN TASTY 3D FLAVOUR

So I heard they released Metal Slug 3D yesterday.

So here's the box art. Took me four pages of searching to find it, and then BAM one appears the size of multiple plants. But it's nothing too great, I suppose. I never really did like the Metal Slug box art -- the others were somewhat appropriate (well, most of them, there's a few which I just don't like to look at, namely the NGPC one), but the difference is this one is covered in angry chibi soldiers. Must be selling HEAPS in japan!

So, you don't like the box art? I'm shocked. Flabbergasted even. But oh no, no, it doesn't stop there, we still have the process of opening the game, reading the manual, putting it in our PS2, turning it on, and pressing start to get through. This is quite a chore here guys, so let's get to work.

"what"

Okay, I wasn't convinced by the screenshots that the game was good whatsoever. More like, it looked like a PS1 3D project weeping of cancer. So I thought "hey, don't worry. I'll just check youtube for videos." and proceeded to do so. And in doing so;

I stumbled across 4 results. They were: Metal Slug 3D Trailer, Metal Slug 3D Trailer, Metal Slug 3D Trailer in spanish, and Metal Slug 3D Trailer. I decided to click on "Metal Slug 3D Trailer" just to be funny. Needless to say, the screenshots are about as bad as the game in action.

The game feels exactly like "ONE", an old PS1 title. You basically shoot a bunch of things, run away, collect some power ups, shoot a bit more, hide, shoot some more, et cetera.

So this is uh, where you discuss Metal Slug and stuff. I can't honestly say Metal Slug 3D looks good. In comparison to the 2D ones, that is. Yet another example of a series which looks better in 2D. I'm pretty sure if Playmore weren't around (and I'm pretty sure if they hadn't of revived SNK) this game wouldn't of even been considered.

On a positive note though, Metal Slug 6 is coming out on July the 27th. From what I've seen it's looking quite purchase worthy, but I just hope they don't go all MS3 on it's ass and have the later levels lasting for hours, like 3 had with it's level 5.

Seriously, they could have broken 3's last stage up into like, three different levels. The first would be the encounter with the abduction, the second would be transferring through space and fighting the core, and the third would be escaping. But no, let's just whore quarters.

Oh well! If you skimmed past all of that: Don't buy Metal Slug 3D. Unless of course you love 3D shooters which don't look half as good as titles of the same series released over 10 years ago.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I think it looks good enough to buy if I suddenly have too much money, but it doesn't deserve to be called Metal Slug at all... Metal Slug is supposed to be a 2d arcade shooter, not somewhat decent 3d shooter. I'm definatly looking forward to Metal Slug 6

Playmore is hell-bent on destroying every license they own, aren't they? They're getting to be worse than the way Capcom abuses its Megaman fans.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Good lord, those screenshots are so damn old. You can go find alot of new screenshots here.

What are my thoughts on this game?

It looks like a fun little distraction until Metal Slug 6 comes out. I woulda prefered it if they stuck with the 2D game play format, kinda like how Maverick Hunter X stuck with the 2D game play format (being that it's a remake of Megaman X). They can keep the 3D graphics, but just keep things in a 2D perspective... something like that, I dunno. I can't explain it well.

Yeah, I didn't expect the nice 2D sidescrolling arcade goodness to be preserved in the transition to 3D. For some reason, I kept thinking that "Metal Saga" was the 3D Metal Slug I've been hearing of.
Is Metal Slug 3D even worth a couple minutes of time?

They should've just done a Contra Shattered Soldier upgrade. Those screenshots looks awful, and even though I like Metal Slug, I'm not going to bother wasting time on this one.

Sounds exactly like every other version of Metal Slug. What's the problem here?

There is no hiding in the other Metal Slugs. It's bullet dodging, and timing. I highly doubt you need either of those skills in order to beat this (the 3D title) game. It's not the 3D that puts me off, it's the cutesy theme. A war between the rebellion army and the regular army occurs, meanwhile aliens drop in for the hell of it and start abducting people. Or something like that. And you have chibi characters blowing up oversized tanks and hiding behind BOXES to avoid them? It just doesn't fit the setting.

Metal Slug's story is actually extremely developed. For simple arcade shooters, there's an absurd amount of detail regarding the story at wikipedia, and the Metal Slug Database.

I thought that everyone already knew for a FACT that Metal Slug 3d sucks, from the day they announced it.

I mean it's Metal Slug. In 3D. That alone is impossible to pull off. KOF in 3D is possible, because its just a generic fighter game. (this reminds me one of those "10 years of golden gaming on the Neogeo" videos in KOF MI2, which basically went through nothing but fighting games)

Metal Slug just doesnt work in 3d. You cant transfer the precisity, the mood, the action, the controls, the speed, the FEEL of the 2d originals.

PS: playmore is run by the same honcho who ran SNK before it was (purposefully) underfunded and bankrupted. The guy went and formed Playmore and bought back the SNK assets one by one. Unfortunetaly in the process, all the artist and coders and level editors found jobs elsewhere. But, Playmore is definetaly trying and they did pull off a bunch of gems in the past - Metal Slug still shines with the 2d series, KOF starts getting back on track, and theres the frenetic Matrimelee too.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Uhh... wow? How can people actually release games like that these days? I think that I'm going to just pretend that this game doesn't exist.

What if they kept the 2D perspective of the classic Metal Slug games but still had the 3D stuff kinda like (as I mentioned earlier) Maverick Hunter X where the graphics are 3D, but the gameplay is 2D, do you think the game would be, at the very least, marginally better than what it is right now?

What if the game was in cel-shaded graphics? I personally think that if they had at least done that, then maybe the game could still keep the cartoony look that the 2D metal slug games have. I don't really like the graphic style they have for this game now. They're trying WAY too hard making it look anime-ish.

I hope some day, when I get into the gaming industry, I can make a 3D cel-shaded platformer shooter game in the same style as the 2D Metal Slug and hopefully make the original creators of Metal Slug proud ...

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

3D stuff but 2D Gameplay? Sounds like that 2 1/2 D idea from Yoshi 64
I can totally accept that. Cel Shading is one of my favourite graphic styles also, but for some reason, I cannot picture Metal Slug cel shaded in a functionable way.
Strangely though, despite the chibi theme being out of place for this kind of game, I don't mind the cute little characters.

To topic, it looks awfully bad. It should have stayed on 2D as argued by a lot. Now I'll wonder how Maximum Impact 2 will turn out.

He meant 3D graphics with 2D gameplay upgrade, like Contra Shattered Soldier.

And yes, the game looks awful, but maybe it has redeeming qualities.

It wouldn't work. You just can't have the same amount of precision in 3d that is required for a Metal Slug game. You couldn't have the speed and the perfect hitboxes for the game to play right. It would take a lot of creativity to port the visual humor of the game to 3d too.

It would be much better to redraw all sprites in higher resolution (at least on Guilty Gear level) or make the animation even more detailed.

For what it's worth, the music is very nice. It's similar to Metal Slug 4 and 5, but with more orchestra.

Agreed, the music is extremely catchy. The boss theme still isn't better than 5's, but the rest of the music is definitely an improvement than the stuff that I heard from Metal Slug 6.

Hm? I've only listened to the trailer music for MS6 but from what I heard the music got a very positive feedback, at least in japan. With its bunch of remixes from old tunes.

I don't like the look of this... It just won't be anywhere near as fluid as the sidescrollers. :/ Playing it in 3D will be a nice twist, yeah, but it's just not Metal Slug.

Are you talking about the ones Fio is holding? Yeah, they probably are. In the other Metal Slug games, Fio and Eri usually use those as their melee attacks.

Heck, I can 1cc MS4 but can't even get past mission 2 without being killed in MS5. The level designs were just absolutely horrid in MS5.

And I'm not that sure that Toshikazu Tanaka did the music - did anyone saw the credit list in the game to verify that?
