Dead Hard Drive?

Ok, I've got a question. If your hard drive just stops receiving power and refuses to spin....does that mean I've lost all the information on that hard drive? Ok, here's the story....

I've recently started using an external case for my internal hard drive. It was working fine before. So yesterday, I turned it off, unplugged everything in order to move stuff from my computer to my friends computer. So when I plugin the external case again, the hard drive LED light flashed a constant busy signal and stayed there. I then realized that the hard drive was not spinning. But a click every second or so could be heard faintly. Is there any hope for that hard drive?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I don't think you've lost all the information on your hard drive. Even though the hard disks aren't spinning, it doesn't necessarily mean that all the data is lost.
The fun part will be trying to get the disks to spin again. Did you happen to drop the external case when you were transporting it?
Perhaps you need software to access your drive (Far fetched, but you never know).

There's nowhere I can't reach.

You could try removing it and placing it back into your PC case. It could just be a fault with the power coupling or controller in the external enclosure. I doubt the data has been lost; the drive would have to power up and do something terrible to the platters to damage it. At a pinch you could get professional data recovery experts to salvage the drive, though I did see an amateur effort on the web of some guy swapping the platters into a new drive chassis to save data.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Clicking sounds in general is not a good sign for your drive.

As has been said, test it in your PC case first (alternatively, use one of those IDE to USB cables) to confirm that it is not a problem with your external enclosure; what you do next is determined by how much you value the data in your hard drive. If it's not mission critical stuff, you probably can try salvaging it yourself. Otherwise, DO NOT do anything else to the drive, get it professionally recovered. There is still a good chance all your data is still intact if you haven't physically damaged your disk during the process.

Unfortunately, professional data recovery experts don't come cheap. Expect to pay at least twice the cost of the hard drive itself.

Ok, so all hope is not lost. The hard drive was not dropped or abused in anyway. The plastic part of the drive, I realized, is coarse. I'm not sure if it was smooth to begin with. Everything looks correct. It looks like it works fine, except for possibly the power input may be damaged. The External Case still works fine because I'm using it with another 60GB Hard Drive temporarily. I guess I'll try it with the IDE cables into the computer instead of USB.

How ya doing, buddy?
