Injecting subtitles into DVD video files

OK, so I ended up with a lot of DivX/XviD files that had trouble playing in my MPEG-4 capable DVD player recently. Most of them play just fine, but some make use of advanced DivX and XviD features not supported by the player thus producing sound stuttering and bad video quality.

To remedy the problem, I converted these files into plain DVD movie format (NeroVision Express) and burned them to a rewritable disc. The only problem is that some of the movies I'm watching are in foreign languages and come with subtitles (mostly in .srt format).

Now I'd like to have a quick and easy way of adding the subtitles to the VOB files (the complete set just has the movie only, without menu or extras) without much hassle.

An alternative to the playback troubles would be to strip the original video files off their advanced encoding features (like GMC and QPEL), but that would most certainly require a re-encoding that is siginificantly more time consuming than encoding to DVD compliant MPEG-2. If aynone knows of a way to transcode a MPEG-4 video to remove the advanced features, let me know.

The player supports external .srt subtitles just fine, by the way.

Ok. You can't strip GMC or QPEL from a MPEG-4 ASP avi file. You would have to reencode, which would probably give you a horrid quality level.

I do know that Subrip can convert SRT files to many different formats. However, I have no idea what format can go into VOB, and how to get them into a VOB. You should check out the Doom9 subtitle forum and maybe ask this question there (as I doubt anyone here on GFF will know).

I will research this a bit as well. I might come up with some info.

Double Post:
I did some looking but subtitles are definitely NOT my forte with video encoding...

There's nowhere I can't reach.
