YAY DISPLAY CONNECTORS! (Or Video Adapter Hell, Episode 1: Laptop Meets HDTV)
Background:
A friend of mine recently ordered a DVI-->YCbCr adapter that he discovered he couldn't use as his Mac Mini would only output a progressive signal, which his TV didn't support (though it did have YCbCr inputs). So he lent the adapter to me so I could evaluate it and determine whether or not I wanted to buy it from him. I've long been intending to turn my Power Mac G4 into a media box with just such an adapter once I get a G5, hooking the old system up to the HDTV and filling its 4 HDDs with DVD rips, CD rips, etc. Since my G4 is both A. my primary production system and B. heavy as a goddamn brick, I thought I'd test the adapter with my laptop first. Problem: my laptop only has a VGA output. Solution (?) I once bought a VGA-->DVI adapter in hopes of using it with my monitor, which I painfully discovered was DVI-D. I figured I'd use this adapter to go from VGA to DVI from my laptop, and then the other adapter to go from DVI to Component to the TV. It doesn't work. Or at least, I don't think it does. I've tried setting the adapter's DIP switches to 480p, 1080i (alas no 720p on my TV, gets upscaled to 1080i), and to both "on" and "off" for the 16:9 setting (the TV is a 4:3 set, so 1080i takes up a "widescreen" portion of the middle). All I get is a garbled, scrolling purple-pink bar. My problem/request/plea In going from a laptop running an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, from VGA to DVI via an adapter, then from DVI to YCbCr via another adapter, is there any way to get this damn thing to output to the HDTV, or will I have to wait and use my Mac with a native DVI port to make this work? Technical Specs Laptop: eMachines M6805 ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, 64MB, 1 onboard VGA out Native resolution for laptop display is WXGA 1280x800x32@60 Radio Shack VGA-->DVI dongle ATI DVI-->YCbCr/YPbPr/Component dongle, with switches for 480i, 480p, 540p, 720p, 1080i, and 16:9 mode TV: Panasonic Tau 32" PureFlat blah blah marketing words Supports 480i, 480p, 1080i, upscales 720p signals to 1080i 2 YCbCr/YPbPr/Component inputs 1 HDMI input Assloads of composite/S-Video inputs How ya doing, buddy?
