Oh wow. I have absolutely no nominations for either of the top two theme weeks. At all. More spots for everyone else, I guess.
Flight (Game Rip) - Soaring in the Stars Very nice feeling of flight/soaring in this piece, which is a huge bonus--songs that capture that feel are almost always wonderful to listen to. The interlude in particular is terrific; excellent all around. Milk Race (ZX Spectrum Game Rip) - Title I know some people have a soft spot for Spectrum and Commodore synth, but it grates on me horribly (NES is about as old as I can get). This piece just sounds tinny, flat, and abrasive to my ears...sorry. Ratchet and Clank (Game Rip) - Gemlik Base - Oltanis Orbit There's a bit of a spacy melody here, but it's buried under layers of ambient sound design. Works like gangbusters in the game I'm sure, but does nothing for me out of context. SimCity Societies Original Soundtrack - Kittens, Cake and Cotton Candy The best Sim tracks take a good melody, pile on the development, and add a pinch of Philip Glass to taste. Even though SCS isn't from one of the usual composing crew for the series, it still nails every mark. SPACE INVADERS EXTREME -AUDIO CLUSTER- - Regress -Original Version- Trance-y, spacy ambience. I'm sure it makes destroying waves of invaders and out-of-body experience, but it's kind of dull without any accompanying visuals. Super Monkey Ball - Step and Roll (Game Rip) - World 3 ~ Chimpan Sea While on the ambient side, this tune has piano and fiddle chops to make listening a fairly involving experience even if it is a little long and on the slow side. Tetsudou Seminar Music Collection - MAROON (Hankyu Railway Image BGM) Lively jazz fusion with that improv feel. Works well as a background listen, but I need a bit more structure in my jazz. Tower of Heaven - Original Soundtrack - Stairway to Revelation I was toying with the idea of noinating this myself, actually. It's a great distillation of what made the cream of the NES-era crop superior to what came after: strong melody and rhythm that takes advantage of technical limitations rather than being bound with them. The fact that it's a latter-day chiptune makes it all the better, since it's harder than you'd think to capture that vibe (MM9/10 being one of the more egregious examples). Pretty hueg gap between my faves and not-faves this week, but still lots of keepers. The Point Spread Kittens - 3 pts. Soaring - 2 pts. Stairway - 1 pt. Normal Week Nom Album: Astral Puzzle Meltdown Composer: Rich Vreeland (Disasterpeace) Track: Let's Fix This Ship! Track #: 2 Year: 2010 Source: Bandcamp This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]()

3 Points: Tower of Heaven - Original Soundtrack - Stairway to Revelation
2 Points: Flight (Game Rip) - Soaring in the Stars 1 Point: SimCity Societies Original Soundtrack - Kittens, Cake and Cotton Candy There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Very nice week. And now I'm just taking this Fortnight scheduling for granted. So it goes:
(3 points) Tower of Heaven - Original Soundtrack - Stairway to Revelation: All it took was a few seconds to put me into NES nirvana. Naturally I wondered what this Nintendo-era game was and why I've never heard of it. I got my answer, of course. (2 points) Flight (Game Rip) - Soaring in the Stars: Would love to find what this game actually is. My Google search predictably resulted in a jumbled mess of results. The tone of this track matched exactly what I expected. (1 point) Super Monkey Ball - Step and Roll (Game Rip) - World 3 ~ Chimpan Sea: I wish it wouldn't go on for so long, but it takes a bunch of elements that I love (piano, soaring violins, warm synths) and mixes them together into a delectable concoction. Would have received points in most other weeks: Ratchet and Clank (Game Rip) - Gemlik Base - Oltanis Orbit; SimCity Societies Original Soundtrack - Kittens, Cake and Cotton Candy; SPACE INVADERS EXTREME -AUDIO CLUSTER- - Regress -Original Version- This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
2 points: Gemlik Base - Oltanis Orbit
2 points: Soaring in the Stars 1 point: MAROON (Hankyu Railway Image BGM) 1 point: Kittens, Cake and Cotton Candy ( 500000000000000 points: Title Just Missed: -Regress -Original Version-, World 3 ~ Chimpan Sea, Stairway to Revelation There's a small audio chop at the loop point of Soaring in the Stars. Kinda annoying, but that's not gonna let that detract me from enjoying it immensely, though. Oh yeah I've yet to play Step and Roll. World 3 isn't the best thing I've heard but the solid production (notwithstanding game compression), credentials, and ridiculous length make me want to check out the rest of the soundtrack. Quite a good week, even though Title has already won seeing as how many points it's amassed. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

Whoah, I'm free again. Breath, listen and vote.
<<2 Points>> Super Monkey Ball - Step and Roll (Game Rip) - World 3 ~ Chimpan Sea <<1 Point>> Milk Race (ZX Spectrum Game Rip) - Title <<1 Point>> SimCity Societies Original Soundtrack - Kittens, Cake and Cotton Candy <<1 Point>> Tower of Heaven - Original Soundtrack - Stairway to Revelation <<1 Point>> Ratchet and Clank (Game Rip) - Gemlik Base - Oltanis Orbit What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
2 points: SimCity Societies Original Soundtrack - Kittens, Cake and Cotton Candy
2 points: Tower of Heaven - Original Soundtrack - Stairway to Revelation 1 point: Super Monkey Ball - Step and Roll (Game Rip) - World 3 ~ Chimpan Sea 1 point: Tetsudou Seminar Music Collection - MAROON (Hankyu Railway Image BGM) The most never-in-doubt result ever. I saw the 8 tracks and immediately knew which one would win. Cinch. wait what the cotton candy track isn't winning?? ^$&^$& Jam it back in, in the dark. |
2 points: Milk Race (ZX Spectrum Game Rip) - Title
2 points: Ratchet and Clank (Game Rip) - Gemlik Base - Oltanis Orbit 1 point: SPACE INVADERS EXTREME -AUDIO CLUSTER- - Regress -Original Version- 1 point: Tower of Heaven - Original Soundtrack - Stairway to Revelation Almost: Soaring in the Stars, Kittens, Cake and Cotton Candy, World 3 ~ Chimpan Sea Good Nomination:

3 points: Tetsudou Seminar Music Collection - MAROON (Hankyu Railway Image BGM)
1 point: Flight (Game Rip) - Soaring in the Stars 1 point: Ratchet and Clank (Game Rip) - Gemlik Base - Oltanis Orbit 1 point: SimCity Societies Original Soundtrack - Kittens, Cake and Cotton Candy Stairway to Revelation is my least favorite stage theme from Tower of Heaven, but it's getting pretty overwhelming support so uh maybe I'm on the wrong side of this one. (don't kid yourselves, Indignant Divinity still rocks the face off this) Title has redeemed all ZX Spectrum tunes I have ever heard and made fun of. Nice batch. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Quick votes:
(3 points) Super Monkey Ball - Step and Roll (Game Rip) - World 3 ~ Chimpan Sea (2 points) Flight (Game Rip) - Soaring in the Stars (1 point) Tower of Heaven - Original Soundtrack - Stairway to Revelation MAROON nearly got points but I was much too captivated by Super Monkey Ball. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?
I think therefore I am... I think.

But maybe that's just me, and it looks like it doesn't really matter anyways. ![]() Most amazing jew boots |
We've got six tracks for Listening in Circles and six normal nominations. So, we need two more of either one for a full-sized batch next week. Anyone want to pitch in any more?
If not, I'll just add Rave Rush two more times to bring the racing game total to eight. I don't expect any objections. FELIPE NO |
