quitting internet

Here's a question for you guys: would you quit the internet? Have you considered it?

Doesn't have to be completely, but just an appreciable amount compared to what you got now?

I ask because I have been considering the amount of time I spend on it; it's a lot (4-5 hours a day), and not much productive comes out of it. Some people quit GFF, is it comparable to quitting the internet altogether for some of you?

What would you lose?

I'm too addicted to e-mail to even consider quitting the net. I get antsy if I don't check my e-mail for 2 hours.

I'm attempting to cut down at least currently. The only reason I came on my computer at all today was to sync some new tracks to my mp3 player and because I had to use my computer it was inevitable I'd end up on here. I'd never stop using the net entirely; I do need to check my emails since for some things I'm only ever notified through email, I'd rather check a news website than buy a newspaper, GFF, an easy way of discovering new music... I just tend to let it get out of hand more than it should.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

As soon as I'm done with this horrific job I'm going to try to cut down on my internet usage. I think it's healthy to peel yourself away from something, and it's when you're surfing around and realize you're not even DOING anything anymore, when you're just clicking at things you're not even interested, it's time to cut down a bit. I'd still check e-mails and such but definitely not do the cycling through my favorites menu that I do now...

But for now, it's my only means of communication with the outside world in my storage closet.

Quitting the internet entirely is not an option in this day and age. As for cutting back, maybe a bit on nights and weekends would be good, but overall I don't have a problem with how much I spend online. I have some co-workers whose work suffers because they surf too much (I had to have a chat with one a few weeks ago), but I'm perfectly capable of stepping away from the computer when there's actual work to do. I'd go bonkers if I wasn't able to surf at work, and I'm lucky that the web filters here are fairly lax.

When I'm at home, I do find myself checking websites repeatedly, when I really intended to look up one thing and then move on to watching TV or something else. Given that my computer is right in the middle of my living room, it's tempting to get sucked into the internet when I really wanted to play video games or something.

I think quitting the internet would be a completely retarded thing to do, frankly. It's the primary source of information and interaction for most people these days. More than ever, it's less of a hobby and more of a necessity. Quitting the internet would be akin to quitting the telephone or quitting the mail.

Perhaps to save yourself from the humiliation of trying to sound like you're being reasonable, but completely fail in the process.

Regardless though, the Internet is a primary source of communication and information. If I had quit the Internet, I would be cutting myself from my family overseas and forcing myself to search up outdated information in a library.

I'll take my chances dealing with it though. Not quite ready to jump back to the olden days.

I can go a couple of weeks without internet service, as I have no choice but to do so every summer when I'm gone on holidays. I wouldn't give up being online entirely, though I could definitely be on it a lot less; nowadays I use the web primarily for e-mail and to check out movie music specialty stores/record labels/message boards to see if any new CDs have been released. I also happen to trade a lot of CDs with a friend I know in eastern Canada, so I'm in contact with him a lot (way too often).

I'm not a frequent poster online, as 90% of the time it doesn't amount to anything worthwhile. I can understand being simple acquaintances with others over the internet but I don't see much of a point of being super-great friends with people who live a thousand miles away; I'd much rather just see people in person rather than sit on my ass in front of a PC to converse with those whom I'd rarely, if ever, see offline.

I had even considered giving up my moderator position here not even a month ago, but because I somehow manage to log onto GFF daily and because I seem to be infracting this dillweed who keeps coming back here on a weekly basis, I'll hold onto it for a little while longer.

Of course, three-quarters of the time I'm on my PC it's because I'm either ripping the soundtracks I have (primarily for my own use and so that I can likely sell or trade them off afterwards) or listening to them, which invalidates my concerns about being online too much.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Quitting the internet? That's nuts. Although my internet usage has been cut back after moving to an apartment near work, which doesn't have internet. I do get online on a daily basis (at work), but the sites I can visit are very limited due to their filters. (I'm lucky if I can log on to GFF).

I can't see myself quitting the internet entirely since it's like my connection to the outside world. It does have has a lot of useful information, and useless information too, it provides entertainment and at the same time knowledge, new music, art, meet different people and stuff.

It's funny, the last two summers I went completely without Internet, and this summer at my Internship, all I did was on the internet.

Why did I go without the internet for two summers you may ask? I worked at a summer camp and we didn't have any internet access unless we broke into the bosses office. Which if we got caught, could get in trouble for.

I really do need to cut back though. Coming back to GFF was the nail in the coffin, and being at two jobs with computers, I keep wanting to read things on wikipedia, or playing music on Imeem.

Also, with me looking for a full time job, with things like craigslist, hotjobs, and wnyjobs, it makes it much more convenient for jobs. I tried looking the old fashioned way, by walking into stores, but 90% of them told me I had to apply online.

I hated it when I drove far just to pick up an application >_>

I may be forced to cut my internet time back due to my being an indentured servant for a while, but I'll still find time for it. I know myself too well.

Internet for some it's addiction, and for other's it's necessity. And for people like me it's plain addiction with very small necessity.

Do you know what? Going on computer is NOT fun unless there's internet. God I miss being amused just by fooling around on the computer without internet.

If I don't have internet, then I have no contact with people, sad to say.

I mean, I'm in contact with people, but not at a personal level.

Not to mention I look up everything online, watch TV shows from torrents, get a majority of my comics, etc--and general piracy stuff.

I can not live without the internet on my current budget.
