Long time no see, Song of the Week. Here's a long-overdue nomination:

Artist(s): Chris Hulsbeck
Album/Game Title: R-Type (Commodore 64 Game Rip)
Track Title: Title
Year: 1988
Source(s): SID.OTH4.COM - The SID 6581/8580 Recordings Archive, which seems to be down, so here's the song itself: R Type C64 Title - Putfile.com

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Nomination time. These seem to have been happening often for me lately.

Album Title: Age Of Empires Compilation Soundtrack
Artist: Stephen Rippy, David Rippy
Song Title: Gamelan
Track Number: 9
Year: 2000
Source: N/A: Age Of Empires Compilation Soundtrack - VGMdb
Viewing file list of Age of Empires Collectors Edition Original Soundtrack
Additional Info: Age of Empires had redbook audio, and I could just grab it from there, but I can't find my game disc anywhere. It's the same thing on this CD, so I'll just go with that.

I was speaking idiomatically.

11eyes -Tsumi to Batsu to Aganai no Shoujo- Sound Track - Eye of Aeon The dance beat in this one put me off at first, but luckily it's better than that. There's some decent variation over the beats, somce nice interludes, and the central melody's solid. Good stuff, though some of the more over-the-top hyperactive bits are full-on aural assaults that left me reeling more than once.

Armed Police Batrider (Game Rip) - Purple Twilight (Zenovia Airport) This one sounded about like I thought it would--solid platforming-style music, but without any real flair or flashes of color to make it stand out form the pack.

Dark Wizard Symphony - Amon - The Prejudiced The oriental sound that crops up here and there is a bit meh for me, and the arrangement and performance seem a tad flat, as is often the case with these orchestral arranges. But it does have some moments of rare power and a nicely propulsive latter half.

Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku Soreyuke Daiundoukai (NES Game Rip) - Fighting Tournament The jagged notes at the begining are interesting but a little off-putting; I thought that the song was skipping at first. After that, things even out to a rather nice NES sound. A bit bland at times, though there's an excellent breakdown partway thru the loop.

GEX (PSX Game Rip) - Cemetery Level Very interesting, almost Stalling-esqe, medley of jazzy and gothic horror staples. The SFX are a bit of a downer, but coming from a game rip that's understandable.

Heavy Metal FAKK2 Promo Soundtrack - Eden Suite I adore the rock-opera opening here-epic guitar chords and melody set over a bed of pulsating synths. It's big stuff with a big scope. The latter portion is a bit more intimate, with guitars on support and a female vocalist taking over the lead, but it's just as enjoyable. This suite was assembled by the composer himself, incidentally, and features better sound quality than the game itself.

Tetris (CD-i Game Rip) - Wandering Thoughts Wow, a CD-i gamerip! I can't remember the last time we had one of those. This pleasant new age music is lightyears away from the standard Cossack Tetris Dance, but it's still quite good. I wish they'd canned the trumpet though--it just sounds, well, canned (as synth brass often does).

Vampire - The Masquerade - Redemption (Game Rip) - DA Boss 1 Modern I've always had a mild hankering to play the Vampire games, though the music has never really impressed me. I'm liking what I hear here, though--Gothic vocals are a well-known vice of mine, but the spiking brass and synth beats really bring an extra layer in. It's over a bit too quickly, however.

A nice bunch! It seems that SotW has been of consistently high quality lately; perhaps everyone in unveiling their big guns in celebration of Week 150.

The Point Spread
Eden Suite - 3 pts.
Cemetery Level - 1 pt.
Wandering Thoughts - 1 pt.
DA BOSS! - 1 pt.

Nomination
Album Title: Bioshock Gamerip
Artist: Gary Schyman
Song Title: Fight for Family
Track Number: 9
Year: 2007
Notes: It's from a rip, not the official downloadable score. And I humbly predict 8th place for it!

I couldn't really get into 11eyes -Tsumi to Batsu to Aganai no Shoujo- Sound Track - Eye of Aeon. The electronic elements were executed pretty well, however there weren't enough melodic hooks for me to grab onto (piano parts were nice though). Instead, I became a tad lost halfway through. =( Just below decent.

Armed Police Batrider (Game Rip) - Purple Twilight (Zenovia Airport) was pretty damn fun. ^___^ Some of the synth lines were fantastic, especially the primary one. Not too cohesive (I drifted in and out towards the end), but this one contains some very entertaining aspects~!

I was intrigued by the start of Dark Wizard Symphony - Amon - The Prejudiced, but when that Asian thing came in full force, my intrigue turned to suspicion. And then I was immediately turned off by everything that followed. Sorry nom.

Nope, couldn't really get into this one too much either. Don't get me wrong, Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku Soreyuke Daiundoukai (NES Game Rip) - Fighting Tournament has some fun melodies (like that ridiculously serious one <3) but it develops in such a basic way, and as such loses my interest rather rapidly. Still, a decent track---perhaps decent enough for a point.

I like the tone and atmosphere of GEX (PSX Game Rip) - Cemetery Level---gothic and a little bit goofy. The composition itself is relatively weak, although I really liked 1:40 or thereabouts. Overall though, it's not something I'd listen to that often, but it's not bad.

I didn't really like the 1st half of Heavy Metal FAKK2 Promo Soundtrack - Eden Suite, but the 2nd half was sweet. A harmonious combination of rock, orchestration and vocals. There aren't any in-your-face stand-out parts like I was expecting, but the oddly elegant tone is greatly accentuated by the performance.

Tetris (CD-i Game Rip) - Wandering Thoughts was really chilled and smooth; very nice indeed. All the subtle instrumental features harmonised exceptionally well. Not much else to say, but this is probably my favourite from this week.

Vampire - The Masquerade - Redemption (Game Rip) - DA Boss 1 Modern was OK I guess. My interest waned a bit throughout (shock horror!), but I appreciate some of the gothic elements. The chaotic tone was achieved pretty competently, too.

this POINT is so fun!!!!----*goes to watch TV*

2 points: Tetris (CD-i Game Rip) - Wandering Thoughts
2 points: Heavy Metal FAKK2 Promo Soundtrack - Eden Suite
1 point: Armed Police Batrider (Game Rip) - Purple Twilight (Zenovia Airport)
1 point: Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku Soreyuke Daiundoukai (NES Game Rip) - Fighting Tournament
5th: Vampire - The Masquerade - Redemption (Game Rip) - DA Boss 1 Modern
6th: GEX (PSX Game Rip) - Cemetery Level
7th: 11eyes -Tsumi to Batsu to Aganai no Shoujo- Sound Track - Eye of Aeon
8th: Dark Wizard Symphony - Amon - The Prejudiced

Below average week on the whole. At least there were a couple of good discoveries~

It's one of these weeks where it seems 6 points aren't enough.

(3 points) GEX (PSX Game Rip) - Cemetery Level
(2 points) Heavy Metal FAKK2 Promo Soundtrack - Eden Suite
(1 point) Tetris (CD-i Game Rip) - Wandering Thoughts

Nomination:

Album Title: Metal Gear 20th Anniversary ~ Metal Gear Music Collection
Artist: Mutsuhiko Izumi, Takahide Ayuzawa
Composer: Mutsuhiko Izumi
Song Title: Zanzibar Breeze
Track Number: 8
Year: 2007
Catalog: GFCA-53
Source: VGMdb

Not the most obscure song out there, but I always felt like it was somewhat an underdog in the series and a fantastic theme. If there would be any opposition however, I could nominate something else.

Eye of Aeon - Forgot I was listening to it after two or so minutes. I could actually see it growing on me in that kind of repetitive, somewhat fun kind of way (thinking Speed Freaks - City).

Purple Twilight - Pretty funky. The audio quality is atrocious, but I try not to vote on that; if anything, the fact that the melody stands out as well as it does in spite of the poor quality only gives it more points in my eyes.

Amon - The Prejudiced - YESSSS Eastern influenced track. Nice blend of symphonic elements with Asian themes; really good atmosphere as well. It kinda meanders as it goes along, though.

Fighting Tournament - YESSSS NES Chiptune. This one... hrm. It's kind of unremarkable, and I get the feeling I've heard loads of NES songs that do the same thing, only better. I don't think I'd like this one if it weren't a Chiptune.

Cemetery Level - Definitely not something I would listen to on a regular basis, though I can definitely appreciate it - it's got a nice blend of Halloween-esque cheese and goofy sound effects. A nice counterpoint to the serious Death Smiles.

Eden Suite - I'm pretty bored by the first part of this song. The second part is a little better ("more intimate," as stated before, is a really apt description), but I just... don't really like it all that much. Tough to say why - I think it's because it lacks a clear-cut melody, which is what I really look for in most songs.

Wandering Thoughts - Speaking of clear-cut melody, this song has it in spades. Very catchy and simple, though it ends really abruptly. Probably my favorite of the week, though I wouldn't give it full points.

DA Boss 1 Modern - What a title. This is like the serious counterpart to Cemetery Level, and I like it a little bit more - it's got a nice beat and decent atmosphere. Probably second-best this week.

POINT SPREAD:
2 points - Wandering Thoughts
2 points - DA Boss Modern 1
1 point - Purple Twilight
1 point - Amon - The Prejudiced

Should be voting within the next half hour.

EDIT: Pretty solid group this week, though no standout awesome tracks. Makes it hard to decide on a point spread.

3 pts. - Wandering Thoughts - Reminds me of John Tesh or something. Is this new age or easy listening? Anyway, it's a nice song with a feel-good melody that gets stuck in my head. Sure, it may be a bit cheap sounding, but that's not a huge deal.
1 pt. - Cemetary Level - ~1:45 is pretty cool.
1 pt. - Eye of Aeon - Gotta love the energetic solo at 2:05.
1 pt. - Purple Twilight (Zenovia Airport)

Jam it back in, in the dark.
