Strange Coincidences
I had this childhood friend named Seve Mamula. For probably 2-3 years of my life I called him my best friend, we got along great. We ended up being sent to different schools (his parents were very bent on having him attend a private christian school) and the only time we ever spoke was when he'd invite me to his birthday party which I only got an invitation to every 3 years because I could never come to the ones he invited me to, so I think his mom got sick of trying. We're 21/22 now, and just 3 days ago I decided I wanted to get in contact with him. I looked up him and his family members on facebook/myspace because all I know are their names, no phone number or address or anything, and nothing came up. Today I was reading my families local newspaper and he had died in a motorcycle accident the day after I had tried to find him.
I'm not one of those crazy people who thinks I could have made a difference or something by getting in contact with him... it was a motorcycle accident, but it definitely feels weird, and I'd call it a strange coincidence. Share your strange coincidences! Jam it back in, in the dark. |
There's actually a fancy name for those types of coincidences: Synchronicity. It is quite interesting how often you are discussing about a certain person, only to have them pop up immediately after. That happened quite a lot for me (even in #gfchat), though I can't name any specific anecdotes right now.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
A very similar thing happened to me just a couple months ago. I had a friend from high school [Jenn] that was a couple of years older than me, and we sort of fell out of contact after we graduated. I saw her here and there, but that was about it.
Early August, she popped up on Facebook through [I forget exactly where I saw her] and we started talking again. Started playing a bit of WoW together, as well. Anyway, about two days later, about 1am, the phone rang; it was another friend of mine--she talked to my mom for a bit cause I was in the bathroom. She told her that Jenn had been in a car accident and died. She had just moved to Texas and got married in June of this year. She was dropping her husband off at work, and as she pulled out of the parking lot, he basically watched a transport plow into the side of her car. ![]() Most amazing jew boots |
I used to be in chat elsewhere and was chatting up with this dude who I thought was pretty neat. He's into old school gaming and etc and at this point, we were talking about that Summer Square Sale for Chrono Cross/Legend of Mana/Threads of Fate for ps1 and he mentioned that if you participated in the sale you'll be able to get some goodies out of it like LoM's 10 soundtrack disc. I'm like ooh cool! Thanks for the info and I'll be sure to check it out.
This is when I was somewhat very green to the internet and very reserved about sharing my own information about where I lived and etc. In fact I outright lied to him saying I lived in this town when he asked what town in eastern part of Texas. He only vaguely said he lived somewhat nearby as well. We weren't into the idea of meeting each other or anything. We weren't that much of friends offline or anything else besides just chat. You know. Chat buddies really. Anyway that living discussion was completely out of context elsewhere anyway. But yeah, when that day came, I went to my usual Gamestop which is in the mall, and asked the manager there about this LoM soundtrack disc or whatever. I really loved LoM's music even to this day. I'm glad I got it despite of having just a measly 10 tracks on there. Or was it five? Anyway, the manager was nice to hook me up anyway (I didn't buy Threads of Fate) with one anyway. And as I was leaving, this dude was standing in my way and asked me by my alias. I looked up and referred him by his alias and he said yup. He must had overheard me and concluded that MUST have been me because that info could had only came from him. xD Really now... the dude isn't a stalker type either. There wasn't nothing specific coming out on that day except Legend of Mana. So its pretty much a very weird conscience... that we both went into this same store on the same day (he hung out a little bit afterward in that store so hence my running into him). Anyway, turns out we do live in the same town but he lives on the outskirts while I live in the suburbs. Anyway those times with him is pretty fun, we met up in real life more often and played plenty of video games at my house. ![]() ![]() I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I don't think I've ever had anything as extreme as the above experiences. My most recent coincidence chain was related to something really asinine.
I was watching a Jamie Oliver cooking show where he was trying to create the perfect mushroom stroganoff, and in doing so discovered a fungus called "chicken of the wood", which looks perfectly disgusting, grows on trees and apparently tastes like lemony chicken. This I discovered by googling the term "chicken of the wood", which linked me to a site referencing the very episode of Jamie Oliver I had been watching. This website mentioned another site called "Steve, don't eat it", saying that they found it strange that the episode of Jamie Oliver should be shown within the same week they saw "Steve" eating the exact same fungus. Not only this, but also when I logged into youtube later on, one of the promoted videos was by the exact same Steve. I've had far more surreal instances of coincidence but it would seem I blank them as they happen since I can't entirely remember any others. All of you seem to be mentioning deaths and I can't help but feel both saddened and humbled by it. My woody fungus is pathetic in comparison. EDIT: One of the weirdest coincidences I've ever had relates to my ex. When we were going out (and it still happens) I would always check my phone for a message within 30 seconds of him sending a text. Even if I wasn't expecting a message. I still can't explain that one. I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() ![]()
