Exclusive Interview with Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe Audio Director (Rich Carle) and Music Composer Team (Cris Velasco & Sascha Dikiciyan, Pierre Langer, Todd Haberman)
Couple of excerpts below:
"Dan [Forden]’s distinctive use of tonality, instrumentation, and ebb and flow of energy are the fundamental elements that still make up the backbone of the
MK musical experience. The composers did a great job of acknowledging these fundamentals while writing their own personalities into each track."
"The music is incredibly different from other fighting games like
Tekken,
Soul Calibur,
Virtua Fighter - it’s really striking. First of all we bring the sinister evil, we bring the dark hero, we bring the fire and brimstone. Secondly, we are extremely careful not to push the player into feeling like the fight is really intense with the music. Our fight music has a lot of open space. The music gurgles with an evil energy in the background. We want the player’s actions to dictate how they feel when they fight – not some pushy music. There is this sweet-spot in the energy level that we look for, a 'calm insistence' that let’s the player know 'it’s on' without being all hyper, overly busy or distracting."
Jam it back in, in the dark.
