Space Invaders Extreme (visual swirling spew)

Release: June 17th (US) / July somethingth (EUR)
Price: TWENTY FUN BUX (US) / Arm + Leg (EUR)

Hello, I am a biggest fgt, as I imported the kawaii drifto etc. Japanese version of this months ago. One of the only times a demo (PSPSPSP) has made me spaz out and have THE DESIRE FOR FULL GARMIN right away. It was very extreme, I became more extreme having played Space Invaders Extreme. You too can increase your extreme levels!

Get this, right. It's Space Invaders. Okay see you later! When you shoot four of the same colour, they'll drop a power-up that lets you wreck up the place with more style (more EXTREME), and you try to keep the power-ups comin'. There are bonus areas which let you shoot space invaders, but in bonus areas. If you're successful at these, it goes into FEVER TIME which ups the jackpot everytime you manage to shoot down a UFO. The game also has music. It's pretty awesome, and the sound effects tend to bleed into it a bit. Not anywhere close to that SEGA game with the wireframe graphics (you know, Toy Commander) but it's stiil cool. Still extreme.

The game has boss fights, which is wow. Never been done before in a video game. Lots of replay value, alternative paths to take. Two player mode. Both games feature unique music tracks. LOOK AT THOSE BACKGROUNDS, HOW WACKY (AND EXTREME). You can turn those off if you want. So in summary, Space Invaders Extreme is a video game for PSP and DS. I give it a 37/10. Also, despite OWNING TAITO I think this is the first time Square-Enix have published one of their games, so. Um.

EXTREME.

After recently playing Space Invaders Revolution (which actually had some pretty good ideas, but was only like an hour long), I'm still in the mood for some more Space Invaders action. I may pick this up sometime soon (though right now even $20 is too much for me ).

How ya doing, buddy?

In Japan, the DS version was compatible with the Arkanoid paddle, which reviewers agree makes the game a whole lot more fun. The US version in compatible as well, but there are no plans to release the paddle over here. A preview I read awhile back said the paddle couldn't be used in most of the modes (multiplayer, the mode that tracks your score to upload online, etc.) because it made the game easier. Does anyone know if the same is true for the Japanese version? I'd pay to import the Japanese version if I could use the paddle in all the modes; I'll probably import Arkanoid and/or the paddle anyway.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I picked this up tonight and it's a marshmellowy pile of awesomeness. At $20, you can't afford not to get this game. The DS version has online multiplayer and high scores, and strangly enough, rumble pack support (it pulses like a heartbeat as you play).

My friend code is 279319-526659, for anyone else who picks this up.

What's the online multiplayer like? Is it just variations on whoever kills all the enemies before everyone else is the winner?

I was speaking idiomatically.

It's pretty much set on survival so you win the game by keeping yourself alive. The top screen will show your friend's battlefield in classic Space Invaders graphics, which is pretty cool.

Yes, and so far I suck at it. I'd actually say the multiplayer is comparible to Tetris. You shoot as many invaders as you can, and everytime you shoot a flying saucer, all the invaders you killed go over to your opponent's screen. The type of enemy you send over is determined by the color of the saucer you shoot. The prevailing strategy seems to be to send the dive-bombing type invaders, which make a beeline for the bottom of the screen if you damage them.

How many players is it online? I'm guessing it's only two, though if it was more I might be more willing to get it just for some OLDK action.

Wow. I'm considering actually paying $20 for this game, though I don't neccessarily like the idea of giving money to Square.

I will debate whether or not to download or buy this game, but it WILL be on my DS by the end of the weekend.

Just 2, unfortunately, but matches go very fast. Worst comes to worst we could switch off, I guess.

Isn't it made by Taito? Fear not!

When I first heard about this I thought it was going to be yet another lazy re-port, but this does look to be really quite good. Which is annoying, as now there's another game I want to buy but shouldn't because I have too many games to be playing as it is. Curses.

Taito was bought by S-E back in 2005, actually.

That said, this is AWESOME. The manual sucks all kind of dick, so not every scoring mechanic is fully explained. I'm figuring it out as a go along though and I'm digging it a fair bit. Loads of fun so far, and we should do some friend code exchanges while we're at it.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Apparently you don't remember the last time we tried that (*cough*PPL*cough*). But who knows, I might still pick this up (I gotta spend that CC gift card on something), especially if the peer pressure is strong enough.

Well, my wife lost her job, so it'd be kind of irresponsible for me to actually BUY the game at this point....so I'll just download it.

If anybody wants to play with me, just hit me up on AIM.

EDIT: This game is actually fucking hard. I'm having trouble getting past levels 3 and 4. How pathetic do I feel.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Worth mentioning is that the sound effects blends into the music in some strange way. It's so freaking rhytmic, you just want to dance while in bed playing Space Invaders EXTREME.

Oh and the game is awesome. For $20, everyone should get it.

OK, so I picked up a copy of this today (got it and Arkanoid DS in a BOGOF deal). Not played it yet though.
