Could you manage your own money?

Whew guys, just wondering, my family, for some unknown, or perhaps genetic reason, spending money like water. I, in contrary, save more and spend less compared to my mom and my sis. They are very horrible on managing their own financial plan, and it's uncommon if they borrow my money by the end of the month.

Of course, to prevent from being broke, I constantly lie about the amount of money I have in my account. I don't mean to be a mean person, but hey, I gotta save for the sake of my butt and my future, and also, I'm still in college =(.

Anyway, do you have the same experience? Is there time when you are forced to give up your saving only because your family member, they spend money like water and couldn't manage their own money and credit cards?

Jam it back in, in the dark.
You all think you got good deals, huh? Ha! You frugal and observant shoppers have more to learn.

None of that approaches this:

I'm yet to encounter this situation, but if I were ever approached by a family member I very much doubt I'd be able to help them anyway because I tend to spend more money than I should. I can save, but saving x amount just means I can blow it on something bigger.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I've given a large amount of money to one of my family members before, but not because he had been spending money like crazy. Instead, it was something to help with a down payment. Otherwise, I'm pretty good with managing my money. I'm still in college and live away from my parents, but I've never had any problems with coming up short.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I'm actually pretty good at handling my money. I've gotten praise for it several times, and sometimes I seem to overdo it. I have these buffers every month, a fix sum of money I promise myself to keep just in case of unexpected expenses. However, I tend to spend a little too much when going out for drinks with friends. I hate to hold back on the fun just because of money.

Yeah, I've always gotten a very healthy bank account, enough to pay a few months expenses if anything. (relatively speaking, considering my current college student status)

By nature, being asian, the prudence when dealing with money is pretty much drilled into me, so I don't see myself having money problems.

However, once I start working, coming to terms with a sudden influx of income, that might change things a little.

It's funny, when I'm living at home, I can't seem to spend it fast enough but when I'm living on my own everything is fine. When I was in my first year of college, I thought I'd be running back to my mother by October but I never had to ask for extra money. I actually had some left over at the end.

I'm at this point in my life where I really have to trying my hardest to manage my own money.

I'm getting married this summer, plus we own a house, and we're planning on making major renovations especially in the basement for our home. We're taking things one at a time. There is no need to try to do everything at once. We would like to do a bit of traveling as well.

I have to manage money because I've learned pretty quick, if you don't learn to manage money properly you could be missing out on a lot of things in life, but that is just based on my perception.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I honestly spend too much sometimes, but I'm rationalizing it by telling myself that once I get all of these purchases out of the way, I can then limit myself properly on how much I spend per month on various things.

But yeah, I tend to either be really frugal or spend recklessly at points. Goes with my changing moods I suppose =\

--edit--
Didn't fully read the question. I've gotten stuff for my mom & grandmother before, sometimes on a regular basis when they will sick or whatever, but thankfully the
only member of my family who seems incapable of spending anywhere nearly sanely is my dad who's... elsewhere, so I've never really encountered a situation where I've
had to pour everything into fixing some problem they've gotten into.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Im pretty good at saving my money, but really bad when it comes to spending other peoples money. ;p I don't ever really ask for money, but my dad gives it to me when Im going out. I've gotten better though at trying not to blow all the money. Having a baby though,it's hard to save money because there's always something I've got to get for him! Although OZZ buys most of the essentials, but since the place he works at is 50 minutes away alot of his money goes toward gas! And more recently,it's gone toward a savings account for us to get married on.

And Yes,I've my parents take some of my money because they need it. I used to have around 11,000 in savings. I never spent any of it but it's all gone now. ;p That was a rough year for them though so I don't hold it against them.

I do believe Im good at managing money and saving it. In recent years,I've gotten better at it!

I have gotten better over time. There ARE times when I splurg, but usually it's either a.) small things or b.) if it's a big thing then it's holiday/birthday related. Part of it is just that I have certain things I must pay for and so I have to keep track of my money.

However, my brother is a real saver. Seriously, he lives with my rents, and I thin k the only purchase he has made in the last two years has been a PSP, Smackdown Vs Raw 06, and a Game Shark or whatnot. I would say there is more, but I haven't heard of any and when I visited him for a month last year, I can't remember him spending much of anything.

I think I'm pretty rad at managing money. Of course, I wasn't that great to begin with. Budgets which I laid out for myself were rarely met. Unexpected leaks in my bank accounts occurred all the time. I had supplemented all the leakage (which was, in retrospect, spent largely on frivolous things) with credit cards, which is a very bad mistake and I strongly urge anyone who can't afford their lifestyle in cash to NOT GET A CREDIT CARD.

My family never asks me for money. No one asks me for money, really. Honest truth is that I give a lot of my money away. Not in cash, but in favors, in outings, and in a good time. I tend to spend whatever extra money I have on my friends and family. Their happiness is more important to me than a few extra bucks here and there. The good thing is that I can afford that now, whereas when I was younger and poorer, I could not.

Everyone around me is fairly responsible about money. There are times when my boyfriend may not be able to afford the electric bill at the moment it comes in the mail, at which point I'll cover it and he'll get me back later.

I learned my lesson about doling out dollars to the ingrates with a past relationship that revolved around milking me for cash. Eventually, I got sick of paying for virtually everything and ditched him.

There's generosity and then there's stupidity.

I couldn't manage my money when I was in college. Unfortunately that would've been the best time for me to learn, but I had money that kept coming in from different directions.

My step-dad was retired military, so of course he got a big staple every month. Also, since he was practically decrepit, he also received a Social Security check which was large because of his military service, or something to that effect. Anyway, my mom, on top of paying for tuition and books every semester, also sent me a stipend every month whether I was employed or not. And my dad had to continue paying child support until I was 22; I was 19 when I entered college.

So had I managed to keep a steady job throughout college, I could've saved up a ton of money. Not only that, but I was also receiving scholarship money and my grandmother, who had inherited upwards of $400k from her late father, was a generous old lady who gave her grandkids $10k each. Really should've saved that, but instead I blew it all on worthless junk. Go me.

Not to even mention that somehow, through all of it, I managed to overdraw thrice in my college years. Now, since then I've learned from my mistakes, repeated though they may have been, and manage my money quite well now. Fortunately I already had a full-time job with GameStop at that point so I came out of school pretty well.

I've made lots of mistakes with my money, but I've learned a lot from it. Being on student loans kinda sucks, but at least I have a set amount to work with.

I spent money like crazy when I had a job! There's now way in hell that I'm not drinking if I just spent 6 hours on my feet while dishing out pizzas. Let's think realistically here.

Yes, as a matter of fact I can. I happen to be 24 years old, and I know that money is nothing you can eat. Money is there to be careful with it.

On the other hand, see, you could die tomorrow or in a couple of seconds because your cat is going to eat you or the world will explode and shit. WHAT ABOUT YOUF CKING MONEY then? you won't be able to buy anything when you're dead ( at least I am not aware of any scientific reports who say otherwise). So maybe you should not be that careful with you money.

Buy whatever you want, depending on your situation. If you need a washing machine, go buy a washing machine. If you're rather interested in magazine trading cards, buy that. You are free to buy whatever you want. nobody can force you to buy stuff by saying "hey you buy this, buy that or you kow what, just give me the money, boy!"

Its your life, so you have the money and you decide what to do
