Computer turned off by itself

Hey, just wonder if anyone can make anything of this. First, my computer is plugged into a power surge protector outlet. Earlier today, all the power in the house went out and my computer shut off. Power came back a few minutes later, then I restarted it and was working fine for a couple hours. Then, all of a sudden the end program windows came up and all my apps closed and it turned off. Tried to boot it again, then it turned off right away when it got to the desktop.

So I waited a little bit then I turned it on and now it seems to be ok for now. Any ideas what caused it?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Could be a few things.

It could be the motherboard is messed up a bit. One time I had a power surge, the computer wouldn't turn on, thensuddenly it would but the computer would automatically restart even after I had selected power off (and things got worse from there).

It could be the fan inside got damaged and so when the computer begins to overheat, it shuts down (I thought though that it would just shut off).

Could also be a program inside got damaged and so it THINKS Windows is suppose to be shut down.

And then, as always, it could be a fluke.

Best thing to do is to grab the Ultimate Boot CD and run it. Do some diagnosis on the ram, motherboard, hard disk drives, etc and see if there are any problems. If not, watch it for a while just in case.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Scheduling error in Windows. Happens often if Windows doesn't shut down properly if its in the middle of specific processes. Nothing to worry about if it's working fine now.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Well it was, then I left my computer on over night. Btw, the computer was making sort of a buzzing noise when It would turn on. But when I woke up I saw that the computer was turning off and restarting itself over and over. This was probably happening over night because the computer wouldnt even boot to the windows logo. Then it would keep trying to turn itself back on. The only way I could prevent this was to pull the plug out of the outlet.

So I left it off for a few days. I turned it back on and and it still makes the buzzing noise in the beginning but it would actually let me go do stuff now without shutting off and here I am. I dont know how long itll be before it might shut off again but Im shutting it off from now on instead of leaving it on sometimes when I go to sleep. So what you think the problem is? Is it gone now or you guys think somethins still up with it? Few of my friends said it could be the power supply or the hard drive dying cuz of the noise. What do you guys think?

Definitely a hardware problem. To isolate hard disk failure, put it on an external case and see if said noise recurs.

If not, probably an problem with your fan or your motherboard.

Let's try a few things.

First, as for the fan, if it turns off by itself again, try to get into the BIOS and find out the temp of the computer at that time. Record it. Have the computer shut off for ten to fifteen minutes and start it up again, immediately getting the temp again. If it's a significant difference, then it may very well be your fan.

However, my feeling is, especially with prior experience and it blantantly turning back on, is that the motherboard is fried. I would begin to look for a new one to replace the old one inside. Get your old HDD out and try to (as people mentioned) put it in an external closure with another computer to see if you hear the sound/get your data off of it. If you get a new motherboard, most likely, you'll need to reinstall Windows.

Well how will I get the temp of the fan if it shuts off? And where do I check the temp at?
