Disgaea hits DS, America (July)

July 2008.
16 screenshots of Disgaea DS

Earlier report from yesterday:
Quote:
Speculation and musing can end, because the Disgaea series will officially hit the Nintendo DS this year in Japan. Nippon Ichi software, best known for its Disgaea series, recently revealed that it has five DS games in development, one of them being a DS adaptation of the first Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, which first appeared on the PS2, and was later upgraded and tweaked for a PSP semi-porting. Its roughly translated title, via NeoGAF, seems to be Disgaea: Prince of the Netherworld and the Red Moon at this time. Whether or not this game will have the extra 20-hour Etna mode contained within the PSP version has not yet been said, and it is unknown exactly how the DS stylus will be used. As well, Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure is seeing DS port treatment. Your guess is as good as ours on that one.

What, it's another port? Damn, I thought the rumors meant they'd be making a new chapter. It's the same game I have for two consoles AND looks very drab judging by the (probably very early) screenshots, so forgive me for feeling disappointed. And since it's a DS cart, there is also no chance of optional audio, so there's really no point for me to play this over the PS2 original.

Still, a part of me hopes it will be a big hit, because Japan could use more regular DS games getting bought, and success could mean more NIS DS titles for us all.

And since I know the DS has great 2D capabilities, we can even expect them to look downright pretty.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Meh, maybe if it was a new game but I'm sure this is going to end up as an inferior version to the ones already out there. I bet at the least the voice acting will be cut for the DS version.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I like how those screenshots look exactly like I was thinking they should do with SRPGs on the DS. Well, reverse the screens, anyway. A top down display like that would make controls with the stylus much better.

Is it just me, or is NIS starting to catch the "money-grubbing" disease? I mean, two of the same game's enough...

Yeah it's the same game. But I think this is more something they're trying to sell to Nintendo fanboys who refuse to have non Nintendo systems. I know at least one person who will buy this because Disgaea has never been on a Nintendo system before.

I dunno, there was a fair bit of it in castlevania POR.

Since I don't have a PS2 (yet), I'm quite happy that Disgaea is making it to the DS. First of all, I'll have a chance to play it, and secondly, if it sells well, then I can hope to see more NIS games on the DS.

I was hoping for a new Disgaea, not a damn port. In that case it's just better to play the PS2 version or the PSP version. It's good to hear though that they have 4 other games in development, hopefully we'll get an original game among those 4.

XD, of course.

I should have elaborated. I just mean, instead of re-hashing Disgaea 1, they could, you know, make another new one, or even (gasp) make a new SRPG entirely.

But, then again, DarkMageOzzie has a point about the Nintendo fanboys...

Unless it's an extremely cheap, sloppy port, I doubt it. Cartridges have come a long way, baby! But oh at this just being another port. Disgaea X2, Disgaea #Reload and so forth.

I already double-dipped for Disgaea. I didn't regret the second purchase but I won't be making a third. I'm more interested in other games, including Disgaea 3. I just don't need to go through this experience again. I can't see it being an improvement over the PSP port, which I found to be great.

With a moniker of "disgaeafanboy" you'd think that I'd be head over heels for this DS version, but even if they decided to add a new chapter or offer new features, it's simply a matter of time. I don't have the time or inclination to invest levelling up all my units with skills and everything for the second time (skipped out on Afternoon of Darkness). I guess, at best, it's a method to get people into the whole franchise who missed out on the original PS2 version way back when.

Even if i hadn't already played Disgaea, i wouldn't get this. Handheld RPGs are not something i enjoy very much.

I might pick it up, mostly because I didn't pick up Afternoon of Darkness and I haven't played through the original in years.

I would've preferred Makai Kingdom DS, though.

It's been confirmed that this game will have all features from the PSP version, as well as multiplayer mode and new characters.

So would I, considering how many times I've beat Disgaea already, and done the optional content. Makai Kingdom was their last great game that wasn't Disgaea. I didn't really get anything much out of Soul Nomad.

Actauly, one thing I would of liked them to do is port the whole deal over to the Disgaea 2 engene.
I'm amazed I put up with Disgaea 1 given how darn slick D2 is.

How ya doing, buddy?

Oh, he joins in his book form. After having 0 Mov in Disgaea 2, that seems kinda odd. Plenair's a pretty surprising addition, though. So much for the tradition of making her an NPC!

This has definitely piqued my interest in the game, so we'll have to see some reviews.

It seems as though my holding off on certain titles has been paying off as of recent, what with Okami being released on the Wii and all. I'll be sure to pick this one up.

Looks like this game is being released on September 23, 2008.
Atlus and NIS America Continue Distribution Partnership with Three Upcoming Titles; Atlus to Serve as Exclusive North American Distributor for Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice, Disgaea DS, and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure - Anime News Network

By the way, how does Disgaea hold against Final Fantasy Tactics? I loved that game to death, and seeing how this is another tactical RPG, I'll pick it up if it's good. I tried FFTA2, but didn't like it too much.
