How can you "refuse" to give up your job? I mean if you fire someone, and they won't leave, you call the cops/security. And if that doesn't work, if you stop paying the person, they will eventually stop showing up. This is not rocket science.

They literally can't not pay him. The district has to go through an Everest-sized amount of paperwork in order to fire this guy, thanks in huge part to federal entitlements and the Teacher's Union.

Just to clarify, since I'm not sure anyone has realized, Tacoma is a city in Washington state, not the capital.

Also, I think this is the result of trying to "fix" everything. Something bad happened once, and people were upset, and lawmakers made a law to prevent whatever it happened from happening again. That kind of shit calcifies into this.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that principals don't belong to teachers' unions Brady. I know my dad has to be the mediator between conflicts of the administration in his school and his fellow teachers since he was elected as the president of their union.

It reminds me of one teaching we had. This particular teacher didn't do anything very bad, but was severly disliked among past and present students for disorganization, unrealistic expections (they were unrealistic because this teacher would changethem up to and including the night before the assignment was due), rudeness, among other things.

Students hoped to ban together to get her fired or at least removed from the class. Complaints were made to the administrator to the department who mentioned something that he didn't want the students to fail (my memory is fuzzy on this part), and it eventually resulted in a woman who came in toask for what our teacher did wrong. I think though students gave up when her first words out were something like, "Each semester we have this happen with this teacher and so we...".

It shows how hard it can be to get rid of a professor. Of course, I never thought it was THAT hard and teachers could get away with so much while still being paid. From all the delays and so forth, it looks like a teacher could get a good year or two worth of pay before they MIGHT have to leave.

Thankfully, we don't have teacher unions in my part of South Carolina. Teacher does something stupid, bye bye teacher.

As a matter of fact, I believe in the county I live in, there is a line in the contract that states you will not join or form a teacher union while working for said county.

I thought that since the AFT represents public teachers, the benefits they bargain for extend to all government employees in education.

I'm probably wrong, and if so, the reason it's hard to get rid of this principal is because of State labor protection, and not the AFT.

I'd imagine that's what it is since thinking about it I remember one of the teachers I was friends with talking about how they were having a really hard time getting rid of this principal even though all of the teachers higher up in the union were for it. Apparently he was hitting on all of the secretaries and was eventually caught nailing one of the secretaries in his office (gotta feel a little bad for his kid that goes to the school). That was what it finally took for him to leave.
