OPSEU are a bunch of greedy shitsacks!

Fuck them and thier fucking strike. It's all a bunch of fucking bullshit anyways - if they really did care about the quality of education, they wouldn't have chosen a month before finals to go on strike. And it's not like they're doing that much work in the first place anyways - they work 18 hours per week max, and make up to 92,000 CDN dollars, with the summer off, as well as every other school holiday. With every other perfessional making LESS money nowadays, what makes them think that they deserve any more?

So this is my message to them:

Get the fuck back to work.

Take it to the journals!

Oh yeah...
(bobo, where are the journals??? ;_; )

Anywho, welcome to the wonderful world of unionization.
More often than not, this is what unions are comprised of. Greedy shitsacks and even greedier shitsacks who take advantage of the less greedy shitsacks' greed.

working as an educator doesn't mean you only work when you're giving your lessons, also have the marking of work and in colleges/universities you're expected to make time to meet up with students who are having trouble. some also have to organise timetables and what the syllabus will have for that year/term, also how it'll be presented, and these days students can get pretty violent at some instituitions.

one of my tutors has to spend his summers doing extra university courses so that he can keep up with what he has to teach and with our views, he also had to timetable our labs and the marking criteria etc and go through 50-100 lab books a week.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

You've obviously never attended a college or university - every professor I've seen either didn't offer any extra help outside of his 18 office hours a week, or forced thier TAs or another senior student to do it.

Jesus, it's not like it's fucking hard work either... Come the fuck on - the hardest it gets is making lesson plans for the courses at the beginning of your courses - and you can't expect it to be easy all the time. Sorry, I should've said fucking LAZY shitsacks.

Actually, perhaps you need to go to a better school.
The professors at mine totally rock in availability. Almost all of them give out their personal contact info to the students so that they can be contacted in case something important comes up.

America FTW.

same, when i was in london, everyone had the lecturers' cellphone numbers so we could contact them anywhere at anytime, you could also walk into their offices whenever they were there without having to make an appointment or go up to them during lunch etc.

for your information, i am currently at my second university, though my current one isn't as good as my last one the lecturers here still expect you to contact them outside of class.

also, have you ever tried to timetable a schedule for 200-400 students who aren't necessarily all on the same course doing the same modules and take into account the timestables of all the staff needed as well as the costs of hiring the postgrad students to help out? at my secondary school it took an entire summer for 94 students covering over 20 subjects just to make sure everyone was able to take the courses they wanted to while fitting in the necessary teaching time as well as making sure it didn't affect the staff's timetable for the rest of the school.

Sorry - They're the Ontario Public Services and Education Union or something like that, my college profs are on strike (week 2 now), because they feel that they want less work, and more money, while everybody else in the world is making less money, but doing more work.

No, they don't that's why it's bullshit. In the the local paper one the teahers or top guys wrote an article saying pretty much that the students don't know anything, and this is for their benefit. What a dick.

University is A LOT different than college.
The college teachers want to get more pay, to lower students in class (which too many students in a class isn't much of a problem from what I've heard), and raise tuition. Pretty much they want to do less work, deal with less students, and get paid more. All while saying that's it's for the students benefit.

And far more importantly, all while we're STILL PAYING TO GET FUCKING TAUGHT. I pay about half thier salary in TUITION EVERY FUCKING YEAR, what gives them the right to WASTE MY MONEY like they are now.

I'm highly dubious of that. Then again, this is Canada, and not the United States.

Regardless, whatever the teachers want, I say give it to them. If you want professors who actually know what they're talking about to actually take up the teaching profession in favor of plying their knowledge in a job elsewhere, you have to make the position lucrative enough. It's the reason the educational system down here is such a ruin.

Don't get on the teachers' case, lean on your government to properly compensate your educators.

Sooo... Some prof apparently stood on a car at Centennial, and as most college profs should know, if you stand on a moving car - you're probably going to fall off. So as a stunning example of the effects of gravity (and silly me thought that they wern't allowed to teach during the strike), the professor fell off the car.

Talk about quality education!

You do know that gravity isn't exactly the focus when we're talking about people falling off moving objects, right?

I know - it's todo with balance and stability of moments (and as a pilot, I know all about stability), but gravity is ultimatly what caused him to fall and hit the cement. He was transported to the local hospital fighting for his life.

Soo... This is my first day back at class - and all it's done is make me more furious that these profs actually went on strike.

IF THEY WANTED QUALITY EDUCATION - THEY SHOULD TAKE A FUCKING LOOK AT THEMSELVES FIRST.

To explain my point:

First class this morning, we had the test that we were supposed to write the day the strike started - not a big deal, it's visual basic, and I'm pretty adept at coding in VB - especially for this class. Our professor is an idiot - he does no work, period. All his 'lectures' consist of are telling us what lessons are helpful at www.vbtutor.net, and what he wants the program to do at the end of the day. And don't bother asking him for help - he doesn't know the first thing about VB (and readily admits it himself). The lowest grade I've ever seen him give was an A (for a project that didn't even come CLOSE to what the requirements were), and the higest was A+++++++++++++++ (yes, an A with 15 plusses, remember, this is Canada's LARGEST college).

So, after a breif spat with that prof (He was saying that he deserved danger pay for being on the picket line - so I told him that if I saw him on the line, I'd run him over in a heartbeat), the next class started. And this one is no better - it's an Air Canada Jazz pilot who's teaching us advanced aircraft systems - he knows his shit really really well, I don't have any doubts about that - otherwise he wouldn't be working at Air Canada. But when he comes into class, all he does is read word-for-word off a powerpoint. That's it. And if you ask him a question - he'll find the slide with the answer, and read it word for word. I left that class after 20 minues, I'd had enough.

And that's not where it ends - one of my other professors recently moved here from Bulgaria - but barely speaks english (as in she understands maybe a handful of english terms). Get this - we recently had a presentation to do on how technology threatens society. First of all, together, the nine of us (in the group) maybe put in an hour of work, total, combined, the information we put up was sketchy at best, no references, and at points - completly off-topic or just plain wrong. Second, for the actual presentation - I was high as a kite, and couldn't stop laughing for the entire 10 minute presentation, 5 other group members didn't even know what our topic WAS, and one member didn't even show up. The two that were left just bullshitted and cracked jokes for 10 minutes for our presentatoin. As the other groups come up, I think we for sure failed - because they've spent hours making powerpoints, making them look good, and making sure that the information is correct. We scored 95%, while the class average was 70%.

Sure - there are a few good teachers here, and for the most part - the flight instructors are top notch (there are exceptions) but it won't matter how many new teachers are hired, or how much the workload is cut by if the system is flawed in the first place.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
