What kind of RAM does my computer use?
I want to install new RAM but I'm not sure what kind of RAM my computer is compatible with. How can I find that out?

Download the tool below.

How do I use it? (I'm using it through command, but I don't know what to do next)
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. Want obscure Classical Music CDs? Search: http://www.lib.uwo.ca/ PM me the code, I'll rip it for ya [MAX 2 CDS/User] |
I'm actually not sure because I've never used it. Have you tried typing "all" (without quotes)?
How ya doing, buddy? |
Two methods: One, open up the case and look at the stick since it will have the type on the label. Two, check online with the manfufacturer of your computer/motherboard and their support page will tell you. You'll want to look for something like 'PCxxxx' or 'DDRxxx'.

Can you tell us anything about it? Is it a desktop computer, or a laptop? If it's a laptop, things are a little more complicated, but if it's a desktop from the last couple of years, there aren't many different types of RAM it could take.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Just give us your brand, model number/name, and year of purchase.

Try that program if you are still having trouble, gives you a whole load of information about your PC. It will tell you what motherboard and processor you have (among other things), and from there we can tell you what type of RAM you have installed. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Great program. Thanks! =)

Your motherboard takes DDR memory.

As an aside, don't get any RAM that is rated below PC2700 (333MHz).
Though they are hard to find these days, its not completely unheard of for some random store to offer it. If you do get some, you'll likely make it asplode. =\/ (actually just fry the buggers) I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Unless you're planning on overclocking, don't get anything above PC2700, either. In other words, get PC2700. If you get anything below that, such as PC2100, all of your RAM will run at the speed of your slowest stick(s), aka the PC2100 (266MHz). Likewise, if you get PC3200 and use it with your PC2700, all of your RAM, including the PC3200 sticks, will run at PC2700 speed (333MHz).
