Unhappy Firefox deletes my bookmarks and settings =/

So the computer crashes - and when I start it again and boot up firefox I notice that my bookmarks and everything in Tools->Options has been set back to default. God only knows why, but whatever.

I got most things back to normal, but there are still a few things I need help with.

1. Firefox doesn't seem to want to save any visual changes I make. Like customizing the toolbars or changing the size of the browser window. It's all back to default if I close->open.

2. Adding search engines isn't possible. They neither show up in the drop-down menu nor are they saved locally.

3. Also need help with getting rid of bookmark icons. I remember there was a way to do that somehow.[/strike]

Problem solved! =D

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Well, first off, backup that bookmark backup. You're lucky it made one. =p

Then I would advice a clean install. Import the backup using Bookmarks -> Organize -> File -> Import, then test it, reboot and test it again. Only now will you see if it was a random problem or if it's more serious than that.

How ya doing, buddy?

Ah, so it was that simple. Thanks =)

And I reinstalled after noticing that it wouldn't save my customizations. Still won't though and I've tried rebooting afterwards as well.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Sounds to me that it's more of a Windows user profile than a Firefox profile - it's apparently unable to save its preferences to your directory for some reason or another.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

Another thing I just noticed is that when I start firefox, a file called parent.lock is created in the C:\Documents and Settings\*\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.gym folder. And when I close firefox it's deleted.

This might be completely normal, but it sure sounds a bit fishy to me.

I was thinking along those lines too. Now all that's left is to figure out what the hell it is

I was speaking idiomatically.

I had this same problem. There is a special file in the Firefox directory that got corrupted. You just delete it and reopen Firefox and all is good. One second. Let me see if I can find a link to it on their forums. I made a topic on it a long time ago.

Here we go!

Consider it a partial payback for all the music you've helped me with =p

Double Post:
Oh. What do you mean by getting rid of bookmark icons, by the by? You want to change the icon's picture thingie or are they on the toolbar and you can't remove them?

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?
Hey, maybe you should try that thing Chie was talking about.

I just want to disable firefox from showing these icons (whatever they're called - the GFF one is a chocobo with GF on his head). There is a page on which you can change a lot of "expert stuff", but I can't remember what it was exactly. It's an about: page, like about:blank or about:mozilla.

edit: ok, I found out what it was (about:config).

Jam it back in, in the dark.
