help on a laptop purchase
I'm interested in buying a laptop. All I really want it for is to download/watch anime, and browse the internet. Can you provide me any suggestions? I figure I'm willing to spend upwards of 1000 dollars, but since this is all I'm looking for, I don't think I need a top of the line computer. Cheaper would be nice. So two questions, what type of computer, ie processor, graphics card, memory etc should I see about getting, and two do you know about any dealsl?
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
The most basic Dell notebook is only $489 (shipping is free), and that is more than enough for what you want to do. I'm not sure if this link will work for you, but if not just goto their website at Dell.com and click on the notebooks, and the cheapest one is on the right: http://www.dell.com/content/products...=19&l=en&s=dhs.
![]() Since all you want to do is watch movies and surf the Internet you don't need any heavy or powerful processors or graphic cards. Watching movies and surfing the net aren't really memory intensive either. You could even get by with an old dinosaur of a computer (like those less than 1 GHz and even 256MB RAM), I'd say. There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]()

Having it work and having it work well are two different things. He won't be able to multitask very well with Firefox, music, downloading and another program or two open with a basic Dell. He probably also wants something that will be able to run Vista decently for when XP stops getting support (and really, XP is a piece of shit anyway).
I'm thinking he needs 1 GB ram and a decent sized HDD. A dual layer DVD burner would be good, and they're not too expensive. He probably only needs a basic graphics card, but I always recommend to avoid integrated graphics - especially if you want to be Vista friendly. Wireless is a must. Battery life probably doesn't matter too much. A nice 15 inch widescreen seems like a good size. I don't know much about laptop processors though. Intel Duo Core or AMD something or other? I know nothing about laptop processors, so I won't be making any recommendations there. Also, I'm guessing that Newegg.com is the best place to buy laptops? Can't you almost always find cheaper and better stuff than Dell there? This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |
For what you want it to do, a Pentium Celeron with 512MiB of RAM, and at least a discrete graphics card is all you need. 512MiB of memory isn't necessary, but it would be useful for multitasking and running Firefox. Most, if not all laptops will include 802.11b/g wireless connectivity.
Assuming that you do have a main PC that runs games, burns DVDs and has plenty of space; then you do not need a separate burner for your laptop or a huge amount of hard disk space as you can share your drives on your desktop on the network. Again, it really depends on what you want from the laptop. If what you said is ALL you want to do, then the Celeron with 512MiB RAM is more than sufficient and there would be no point upgrading to Vista, so you don't need any expensive components like Core 2 Duos and fast graphics processors. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
This is more or less going to be a desktop replacement - he has no desktop. That's why I was recommending that he get a burner.
How do AMD chips compare to Intel Core Duo? I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
I see, then a burner would be very useful and you might need to upgrade the hard disk. If you are upgrading the hard disk, buy one separately as it will probably be cheaper than buying from the vendour, and you can put the one that came with your laptop into an external enclosure.
The newest AMD mobile platform is Turion64, which is basically a Mobile Athlon64 with specified graphics and wireless, similar to Intel's Centrino platform. (Although they are a little lenient on which hardware manufacturers can make the Turion badge, unlike Intel.) Performance wise, it's competitive but Pentium M still excels in more benchmarks, and it generates more heat and therefore uses more battery than Pentium M and Pentium M ULV versions. Turion64 X2s are in the works, presumably a dual-core Mobile Athlon64 X2, to compete with Intel's upcoming Core 2 Duo Merom cores. Edit: Spellings. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I'd suggest the Toshiba Satellite A105. I got a killer deal from Circuit City in August. Its specs are 1.73ghz dual core, 2 gb ram, 120 gb hdd, dvd burner/etc, fingerprint reader. It came with a printer too. All $1150.
I would have been satisfied with atleast a gig of ram, dual core processor, and like an 60gb hdd though. FELIPE NO
The only way out is through.

well, since this is going to be desktop replacement here are my minimum recommendations:
memory: 512mb hard drive:60gb graphics:integrated optical drive: dvd-rom wlan:any and here's my recommended specifications: memory:512mb -1gb hard drive:80gb graphics:integrated, still (you don't need an uber powerful graphics card, not for what he wants to do) optical drive :dvd=-rw DL wlan:any processor at the very least should be centrino. you don't need dual core to watch a movie, and I can multi task just fine with a single core processor. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?
I am myself. You can't change me. I am who I am.

I'm just gonna throw this out there even though it might not be the best for you or your situation.
I've really been impressed with MacBooks/MacBookPros lately in the laptop realm. They have a really good build quality to them, small footprint and very thin/light, good speed with Intel Core Duo, great screen quality, superb battery life (for the MacBooks), and the life-saving breakaway power cable (which has saved me more than once). Even if you don't like MacOSX, I've setup a co-worker with a MacBook that he is using WindowsXP on via Boot Camp, and he is loving it. I setup the computer so its boots directly into Windows and he doesn't even touch the OSX. A MacBook is a great idea AS LONG AS YOU DONT PLAN ON PLAYING PC GAMES. A MacBook Pro can handle HL2 Source fine in Boot Camp (done it myself). Anyway, just throwing that in that for performance, build quality, battery life, and breakaway power, the MacBook wouldn't be a bad idea, even if to use with WindowsXP via Boot Camp. Personally I'd go with something that has Core Duo and at the very least a Penitum M. Graphics card, on-board is fine for watching anime. Memory, 512 is okay but 1GB would be preferable. I'd also recommend going to local retailers and looking at the screen quality in what is offered. (Don't let the salespeople know you are interested in buying!) What I would keep in mind is basically some benchmarks in your own mind as to what prices seem about correct. On newegg you can get this unit for under $1k and it's really nice. It only lacks in 2 areas, DVD Burning and it has 512MB of RAM. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834114239 As for brands to look at... I'd say to look carefully at HP, Toshiba, Dell, and Sony. Brands that are just okay... Acer Major brand to stay away from: Lenovo Do be careful with Dell though. They are a very tricky company with their marketing. Their prices look sooo tempting but often what you get won't be worth your while down the road. Configuring what I listed above as requirements, a Dell Inspiron E1505 comes to around $930. I also think the Macbook idea is a really good option. Macs typically only allow you to select really good hardware settings so you'll be set with that. Additionally you get all of their great software packages that come pre-bundled with the system. Also if you are watching lots of anime with this then you might want to later down the road get an external hard-drive of some sort. Tigerdirect regularly has a 250GB kit on sale for around $100 (drive + enclosure) or you can get an enclosure and any size drive you want to fit it. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Looking into something new
Moved to Hardware and Networking Zone
http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/ha...very-soon.html How ya doing, buddy? |
You may want to try the Hardware & Networking Zone forum, which is more specific towards these kinds of queries.
Personal experience wise, Toshiba makes excellent laptops (but has lousy customer service). I don't like Dell laptops, and have a pretty good experience with IBM Thinkpads (now Lenovo). I can't comment on Sony, Acer, AsusTek, or Hewlett-Packard laptops. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Ok then, thanks for the help Zerg.
