Okonomiyaki - "Japanese Pancakes"

For those who don't know what okonomiyaki is

Have you ever tasted this? Maybe some of you guys agree with me when I say the squid adds a nice texture. My sensei made it for me one night, boy best thing I've put in my mouth in awhile. If any of you guys use this recipe, tell me how it turns out. Your local oriental store might have some of the mix, and the pictures show you how to make it, if you're interested.

Suggestion: Do not add maple syrup or butter on first taste. Not American pancake.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Okonomiyaki is awesome! I usually get it at this Japanese restaurant ('Izumiya' in SF's J-town.) They give you a lot of sauce on it, which I think is the best part of okonomiyaki. My girlfriend and I made this a couple of times, but it doesn't beat the one that the restaurant makes.

Good stuff. You guys should give this cooking a try, and/or find it at a restaurant.

Woah there is okonomiyaki at Japan Town (SF)?!

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Usually, I sometimes make it at home...It tastes great especially with like ham or like DS said, Ika (squid).

I remember we tried to duplicate it once, after eating it in a restaurant. We ended up not doing too well. Now that we have a legit recipe, I'll give it another shot.

It's real tasty when it's made right, but I'm not a big fan of most seafood, so I'll stick to pork, or something.

I'm not really a big fan of the squid. I usually order/make it with beef, still tastes great. All this talk is making me want to go order some tomorrow

Yum. I like yaki soba with the lots in my okonomiyaki please. And toppings with the lots: okonomi souce, mayo, mountain of seaweed and pickle ginger. It goes really well with a cold glass of beer. And it's already a satisfying meal.

The Chinese scallion pancake is more like a side dish (like bread), it's drier, usually without any meat, and doesn't come with sauce.

How ya doing, buddy?

I love Okonomiyaki! Especially with lots of sauce and mayo. I was initially very put off by the thought of putting mayo on it, but it tastes even better that way. I've only tried Osaka-style Okonomiyaki though. I heard Hiroshima-style uses a different sauce.

I'm not a big squid fan, so I usually ordered it with beef or pork, with some extra katsuo put on as well. I've never tried cooking it before, but I'd like to one day.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

It's nice I remember, but it's definitely premium food. I'd rather go with a normal pizza thanks. But then I don't really eat much junk anyways.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

What do you mean by 'premium food'? Back home this is like fast food for a tight budget (around 700-1000 yen, less than US$10 anyway, sometimes even include a beer), rank like a bowl of ramen or a bento from convenient outlet...

Okonomiyaki is the shit, i've only had it in one place here though, it was good though i must admit i got a bit bored of it towards the end, needed something else i dunno what though.
I don't quite know why they call it a pancake though, i see it more as an omlette than anything else but meh.
It's also a great way to get some greens into you even though it will send your innards insane the next day heh

I've actually always wanted to try it (like alot of japanese stuff), but really have no accessibility to it. Sounds tasty though.

I have never had it, but it looks VERY interesting and delicious! i may have to go to the local japanese resturant and try it out. I have some Japanese friends that I could probably go along with.

Make sure you have the proper one, the one they cook it on your table. I have tried a few version when I came to Australia in those Asian (Chinese) takeout, they taste more like omelet with lots of cabbage and nothing else in it. Then they put some sauce that tasted like bbq sauce and some homebrand mayo on it. And they call THAT okonomiyaki too.

We made Okonomiyaki while we were in Tokyo, at a small restaurant in Asakusa. Needless to say, I burnt myself a couple of times. However, the fact that they gave us fish with it, and I don't like fish, really turned me off to it and I didn't really eat much. Making it was really fun though!

okonoultimaki~~

I proceeded afterwards to a nearby vending machine and convenience store.

Life would be much easier in Tokyo if you like fish.... since steak is so expensive... unless you eat chicken all the time....
