The game is no more challenging than Super Mario World was/is.
Also, I'd say the length of the game is about equal to Yoshi's Island.

Sooo...yeah.

I've found it pretty easy to score 1UPs and the like, but a lot of times I find myself dying to try and get a Big Coin (3 in every board) or to try and get the secret exit.

What does everyone think of that new shell powerup? I think it's cool, but I wish they made it easier to get to. That mini mushroom is kind of dumb though, almost like the Shoe in SM3: useful for special circumstances only.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Kuribo's Shoe is the best.

You, my friend, are a blasphemer.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
It was lunchtime at Wagstaff.
Touching butts had been banned by the evil Headmaster Frond.
Suddenly, Tina Belcher appeared in the doorway.
She knew what she had to do.
She touched Jimmy Jr's butt and changed the world.

The Mini Mushroom is awesome. You can jump much further with it, you stay in the air longer, and you can run on water with it. It makes stages like 6-2 awesome.

The Koopa Shell is cool, but annoying in most cases. Since I am subconsiously holding down the run button most of the time, when it activates, I tend to forget how to stop it. It's fun in stages where you can use it till the end of the stage with no breaks, though.

Okay, everything in the first 6 worlds done.

Why did Nintendo include this "feature?" I like nostalgia as much as the next guy, but not for clunky outdated save systems.

EDIT: A bit of a spoiler regarding the save system, but...
Spoiler:
I found out that you can save at anytime using the "start" menu after you beat the game once.
Regarding the save system,
Spoiler:
It's true, just got my hands on it this afternoon and finished it awhile ago.

Also the animation in the game is well done and during one part in the game,
Spoiler:
I was shocked to see King Koopa boil in lava. :shh: For a Nintendo game that's pretty darn gruesome.

Overall the game is great, now time to do some speed runs.

Yeah, ditto. Game is awesome.
I hardly use the turtle power up or the mini-shroom (or big shroom for that matter), though I imagine I'll use the mini-shroom more, when I'm collecting coins I missed later.
Still, everything else is awesome. I love the raw platforming goodness. Although I wish the mini-boss (kid bowser) battles were more diverse. Homage to SMB3, I guess, but they could have done something more new.

Wow . . . this game is kinda . . . easy. I breezed through it on my first day, had to wait for it to ship from Circuit City since they NEVER STOCK!
It's great fun and there are good puzzles. What really makes it difficult is there's really no great mechanism in the game to get mini mushrooms and shells easily.
Sure there are the floating boxes, hammer bros., and mushroom houses, but once those are gone they're gone. Then you have to rely on the switch boxes.
Then you have to survive the level and exit with the power-up, and then survive the level you need it for in order to get the coin or the special route you want. Oy. It's rough, but it's the only real challenge in the game. The bosses are weak with simple patterns. With such imaginative design you'd think they would be tougher.
My biggest complaint though? Why is there no save option from the world map? You have to unlock a route or beat a castle in order to save. Seems pretty lame to me . . . I know it's been mentioned, but sheesh!
I guess that's the only way to really make lives have a point, because then every time you die you could just reset the DS and be right back where you were. Still, I've been doing this to retain the items and power-ups I have when I die trying to get to somewhere with Mini-mario.
It's also weird because you were able to save on all maps of SMAS, so I really don't get why it's so limited.
I also wanted more. More suits, more worlds, more secrets . . . and more time with starman (it barely gets through the full theme, and what is that, like 4 seconds long?). I think Super Mario World was a much larger game, what with there being a special world, a star road, many ways to exit massive levels, etc. I also wondered why the koopa kids didn't replace the annoyingly unimaginative Bowser Jr. battles.

Oh well . . . guess they have to have something to work on in the sequel . . . heh.

Love the music though. Will need to dl the rip once it's completed.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

The game is just like the OG Mario Bros those old enough to remember it. The game is really short, and really easy. Just the gameplay was so good back then you could play it for 40 hours and not be tired. At least I did.

I Like this game as well though, but there's no way anything can top the time i put into the original.

Getting the coins has been no simple task, for me. Beating the main game was mostly pretty simple. Fun, but relatively easy.
The coins are a bit more difficult.

By the way, the turtle shell thing is alright, but I really like the mini mushroom. I just find the platforming to have a very different feel with it, and I play through entire levels like that. More challenging, too, since you're tiny and you can't get hit.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I love the moon jump feel of Mini-Mario as well, but often gets me in trouble becuase you end up just blazing through the level with massive jumps. I normally end up face to face with a goomba and buy the farm. Still, great fun. Just wish some of the more obvious game mechanics were worked out.
Otherwise, it's a must-play.

New Super Mario WMP skin

Hey guys, I wasn't sure where to mention this and didn't think bumping the old new (hahaha) super mario bros thread was a good idea. Anyways for quite some time on the New Super Mario Bros official site there has been mention of a WMP skin. Anyone looking forward to this? It sounds awsome, and it will give me another reason to delete my WMP 11 beta shit!

I love this game. It brings back old memories without it being the same game remade 5 times over. Something about Super Mario, you can just play the same levels and not get bored. It's just so addictive that way. I haven't had a chance to play much, but yeah, not being able to save whenever you want is annoying. But I guess that's how it was back in the Super Mario World days, you have to get to the next point to save.

I hope they do more, New Super Mario 5. Hehehehe. Just kidding I got a DS lite for this game, but the DS lite is worth it on its own.

I'm disappointed. I was informed that the koopalings would be in it, along with Bowser Jr, but nope! Apparently it was a misunderstanding, and only Bowser Jr. is in it. How disappointing! If this game is supposed to be a throwback to the older games, then it'd make a lot more sense to put in the Koopalings than Bowser Jr. He's not an old character, fer cryin' out loud!

That said, I'm sure the rest of the game rocks. I have yet to purchase it, but I will some day!

I agree with you, Freelance Wolf. But otherwise, I think the game is great.

Also, Mario vs. Luigi is the most fun I've had with multiplayer DS since Mario Kart, if not better.

And I also agree with Freelance Wolf about Bowser's kids not being in the game. I haven't finished the game yet, I'm on the 5th world and I have to say that I'm disappointed at the game's length. Yeah, it's cool that the big coins are something that you can hunt for and find to give the levels more pizazz, but...the game's still shorter than Super Mario Bros. 3 even if you go to the extra effort to play the worlds on the bottom of the screen. And Super Mario Bros. 3 was created 17 years ago!

That being said, I'll have to say that overall, it's a great game. I think the item additions are pretty sweet, though I haven't extensively used that many yet since I'm playing through for the first time, but I will when I look for every big coin on every level.

Also, I like how the koopas will turn their heads and how the goombas will jump at certain parts of the music. It's pretty cool and it's a nice touch.

Most of the new items suck. The Mega-Mushroom sucks, it pretty much has no point except for an easier way to trverse the level and another method Nintendo has thought of to stuff 1-UPs down your throat. First time it's awesome, every time after that it's shit. Useless.

The Koopa shell is a little more useful, but annoying how you automatically revert to the shell after you have ran a certain distance. They should have made it that you have to get upto a certain speed then press down on the d-pad to go into the shell or something.

The Mini-Mushroom is awesome, easily the best item in the game. The extra jumping distance and seeming weightlessness are great. Sure it's not ideal for every level, but still far more useful and intuitive than the mega msuhroom and koopa shell.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Who cares about the Koopa Kids, Bowser Jr is pretty much the exact same thing.

Yeah.. this game is awesome. I've technically "beaten" it but the game has only just begun for me. I'm gonna max out the score!

Except the Koopalings didn't look like clones of Bowser (a big plus) and actually had some sort of personality based on their designs :( Larry was my favourite.

Their appearance in Mario and Luigi: SSS, while cool, was also a lame attempt to bring them back, as they never spoke once. It's like they were just slapped on at the last minute to appease the fans or whatever.

It'd be pretty nice if Nintendo actually brought them back, but aged them (if Bowser Jr. is going to be the "baby" of the group now).

It's essentially impossible, though, since it seems that Nintendo has written them out of any kind of canon that the Mario series has.

Then again, they did bring back Daisy for a few spin-offs...

Jam it back in, in the dark.
