Okay, so the name is pretty stupid and the box art looks a bit like spew, but it's an actual new 2D-ish Super Mario platformer. New Super Mario Bros.. new.. Super.. Mari... oh. So YES. GBA sits in the corner and cries. "Guys, guys, I have Mario Pinball Land, have a go, come awwn". Despite the name, it'll be a lot like the old Super Mario Bros. No talking whirly bird rocket powered onion flavour Super Soakers here. This game won't even have speech, no WAH HOO LET'SA GO or painful groaning as Mario's kneecaps shatter under his own weight after jumping on a Goomba.

NO. You'll be able to wear a Koopa Troopa's shell and crash into everything though. And there's now Xbox mushrooms that make you grow REALLY bloody huge for a few seconds so you can breakdance on the Princess. There's also a two player mode, where you race to the finish of every level. Perhaps for pirate gold. There's no boss levels in this mode.

UUMF.

I originally disliked the idea that the grapihcs were polygons instead of lovely 2D sprites, but that was mainly cause the early screens looked worse than the average N64 title. The visuals don't look so bad now, and while I still would have preferred traditional 2D visual, this still manages to bring some nostalgic atmosphere. At least the fireflower screen there did. And we'll always have Princess Peach for 2D 2D~

Anyway, looks like a lot of fun, and I am glad it's a true Mario game instead of yet another slightly gimmicky elaboration. "This time you are balancing Mario on top of a big ball and must rub the screen on different sides to prevent him from falling off as you navigate a whopping 3 levels!" And seems like the polygon graphic are put to good use as enemies appear in all kinds of sizes now.

Pirate gold!

Wait wait wait wait wait. A mario game being developed by Sonic Team? I think the world has just started to end.

It wouldn't of killed them to think of something more creative other than "New Super Mario Bros." though, sheesh.

Eleo Mar 14, 2006 06:36 AM

Lol, Sonic Team. Best unintentional humor ever :tpg: Coming soon, Crash Bandicoot by Microsoft, I guess.

My only fear for this game is that Nintendo will make it too short. I am not sure if anything has be said about the length, but it better be rather long. I don't think there has been a Mario platformer that hasn't been a decent length though.

Let's take another look.

Ok so Infernal has made a joke about the platform, the price and the release date. From this we can draw the obvious conclusion that he must've been serious about the developer and publisher.

Darkcomet72 Mar 14, 2006 08:55 AM

From what I've gathered, the USA date is correct.

HERE is that desert video, for all 0 of you who haven't seen it.

This is one of the games I've been looking forward to this year. It looks absolutely fun. Thanks for that video. I enjoyed it.

Yeah, or Zelda by Capcom.

Oh, wait...

This is the only game I could see myself getting if I bought a DS... or rather it's the only game that makes me want to buy a DS.

Freelance Mar 14, 2006 12:17 PM

The 2 player cooperative mode is the main reason to get this game, aside from the fact it's the first Mario platformer to be seen in nearly a decade. Am I the only one who thinks Mario platformers should have remained 2-D? Anyway, it's too bad I don't know anyone IRL with a DS. Oh well, it still should be fun.

Kimchi Mar 14, 2006 12:49 PM

Hmm inferno had me there... so I had to personally check the develpoer >.> (no joke), it looks O.K, lets hope that the controlls are good >.>

Lukage Mar 14, 2006 12:59 PM

Everyone does know the SEGA is a division of Nintendo now, RIGHT?

First thing I thought when I knew the news was ZOMG PHANTASY STAR! Looks to be classic-style Mario, so no worries.

Darkcomet72 Mar 14, 2006 02:59 PM

One thing interesting of note is when Mario grabs a mushroom, he dosen't stop moving. I thought the game would be slower paced, but with that specific, it dosen't seem to be the case.

Most notably the screenshot at the bottom left corner:biggrin:

An honest to goodness 2D Mario game? Not a reprint of the old games or anything? Holy Moses. I wonder if it'll be quite the same, though. You think the level designs will be at all interesting without Miyamoto sticking his hands in there?

The gigantic Mario looks fun, but is probably a needless gimmick. They tried that in Bonk 3, to rather mediocre effect.

What's wrong with the bottom left screenshot?

Level 1-1 of "old" Super Mario Bros., maybe?

zeOLiTh Mar 14, 2006 04:39 PM

oh wow, this game is sexy :P i have to buy this ;)
anyone got a highres version of this sexy boxart? :P
or maybe a wallpaper of this boxart? ;)

Infernal Monkey Mar 14, 2006 04:53 PM

Gigaaaaantic box art.

Neogin Mar 14, 2006 04:59 PM

I'm not diggin' the box art, but overall, the game looks awesome. Though, I wonder why it took about 20 years for Nintendo to release a new Mario game..

surasshu Mar 14, 2006 05:38 PM

They got distracted by that annoying "3D platformer" fad.

Neogin Mar 14, 2006 05:45 PM

Good point, but I have to admit Super Mario 64 was a good game..

Megalith Mar 14, 2006 05:48 PM

Game sucks.

The entire game should take place in Giant World from Mario 3.

Hahaha, Super Mario 64 only reaffirmed for me that there hasn't really been a decent original Mario platforming game since Super Mario World on the SNES (and it's associated remake on the GBA.)

Although, maybe this new one will break that trend. I have hopes that it will.
