Hey, guess what GameFAQs churned out: An explanation to ranks.

Someone meandered into the realm of the japanese internet and discovered this page:
http://www6.atwiki.jp/snake/pages/183.html

All in japanese, and one guy kindly enough translated it. I shall post it into this spoiler tag as to save space for everyone. Some are still iffy, of course, but this is pretty damn close to the truth.

Spoiler:

Each animal represents a certain play style. For example, chicken shows cowardice.

Foxhound and Fox ranks take 15 hours of play time, Doberman and Hound ranks take 10 hours of play time, Crocodile, Eagle, Scorpion, Jaws, Kerotan (and two others) take 5 hours of play time, all others take 3 hours of play time.

* FOXHOUND (F.H)
Req.1 (The number of total team victories - the number of sneaking mission victories) divided by (the number of total capture rounds + total rescue rounds + total team deathmatch rounds) = 0.65 or above

Req. 2 (Total kills + total faints against enemy) divided by (total deaths + total faints) = 1.5 or above

Req. 3 (Total amount of sneaking mission rounds + total amount of rescue rounds) rounds divided by the total rounds = 0.65 or above

Req. 4 You have to increase by 30 ranks between each requirement.

* FOX (FOX)
Req. 1 (The total number of team(CAP, RES, TDM) victories - the total number of sneaking mission victories) divided by (total number of capture rounds + total rescue rounds + total team deathmatch rounds) = 0.625 or above

Req. 2 (Total kills + total faints against enemy) divided by (total deaths + total faints) = 1.45 or above

Req. 3 (Total amount of sneaking mission victories + total amount of rescue victories) divided by (total amount of sneaking missions + total amount of rescue victories) = 0.5 or above

Req. 4 In between any rule your rank has increased by 200. (I believe this general translation is the F.H. requirement, not what I said before.)

* DOBERMAN (DOB)
Req. 1 (The total number of team (CAP, RES, TDM) victories - the total number of sneaking mission victories) divided by (total number of capture rounds + total rescue rounds + total team deathmatch rounds) = 0.6 or above

Req. 2 (Total kills + total faints against enemy) divided by (total deaths + total faints) = 1.4 or above

* HOUND (HOU)
Req. 1 (The total number of team (CAP, RES, TDM) victories - the total number of sneaking mission victories) divided by (total number of capture rounds + total rescue rounds + total team deathmatch rounds) = 0.55 or above

Req. 2 (Total kills + total faints against enemy) divided by (total deaths + total faints) = 1.3 or above

* CROCODILE (CRO)
Req. 1 (Total kills + total faints against enemy) divided by (total deaths + total faints) = 1.5 or above

* EAGLE (EAG)
Req. 1 Head shot ratio ratio of 30% or more
Req. 2 (Total kills + total faints against enemy) divided by (total deaths + total faints) = 1.3 or above

* SCORPION (SCO)
Req. 1 Murder ratio with Scorpion 50% or more
Req. 2 (Total kills + total faints against enemy) divided by (total deaths + total faints) = 1.25 or above

* JAWS (JAW)
Req. 1 Murder ratio with Knife 7.5% or more
Req. 2 (Total kills + total faints against enemy) divided by or (total deaths + total faints) = 1.25 or above

* CHAMELEON (CHA)
Req. 1 Survival ratio in sneaking mission and rescue of 50% or more
Req. 2 Use the cardboard box a bunch (maybe deals with amount of time in box, or stun evades using box??)
Req. 3 In the event of choosing between CHA and PGE, CHA comes first.

* PIGEON (PGE)
Req. 1 (The amount of kills in capture) divided by (the amount of faints you have in rescue) = 0.5 or below (Really unsure about this one.)
Req. 2 Catpure play time + rescue mission play time = 2 hours or more
Req. 3 In the event of choosing between CHA and PGE, CHA comes first.

* TARANTULA (TAR)
Req. (Total team kills + total team stuns) divided by (total amount of kills + total amount of stuns against enemy) = 0.05 or above (UNSURE)

* FLYING SQUIRREL (F.S)
Req. 1 (Total number of rolls) divided by (amount of total rounds played) = 10 or above

* SNAKE EATER (S.E)

* KEROTAN (KER)
Req. 1 (Total play time of capture) divided by (total play time) = .75 or above

Req. 1 (The amount of headshots you have received) divided by (total amount of deaths you have received) = .35 or more

* NIGHT OWL (N.O)

* TSUCHINOKO (TSU)
Req. 1 Do not log in for 30 days

* CHICKEN (CHI)
Req. 1 (Total kills) divided by (total rounds) = 0.3 or below

Req. 2 (Total stuns against enemy)divided by (total rounds) = 0.3 or below

Req. 3 (Total stuns) divided by (total rounds) = 0.5 or below

Req. 4 (Total deaths) divided by (total rounds) = 0.5 or below

How about that. Here I thought you got the PIG rating if you got killed too many times. It doesn't look like deaths matter too much. If anything, team victories seem to be the key to a higher rank.

I thought I would at least get the F.S rank, considering how often I roll during matches.

I joined in one of Spatula's hosted games late last night. It didn't seem that he recognized me. We played for a bit in the canyon area (which I'm officially sick of since people keep picking it), but did pretty poorly. The other team strategized like crazy while everyone was avoiding Spatula's typed commands. All this whining about no one using headsets, and yet none of us used our own.

Also, I finally gave my old PS2 pad a try in place of my Logitech Wireless controller. As I guessed, the Logitech pad isn't very precise to use, as the firing button is far too sensitive, resulting in too many accidental shootings instead of cocking the weapon. Even though it's wired, I recommend sticking to the original pad for MGS play.

Damn, I wish I had maps for this game. I took a look at the Subsistence strategy guide today. It's not worth buying, but it does have several handy maps as well as location names and descriptions on them (for instance that large flat roofed "hanger" in City Under Siege is actually a "garage". The elevated area between the spawn points that usually erupts in chaos as soon as the game starts is a bank! I never knew. Makes team organization a little easier). I WANT SCANS!
I already knew all the tactics listed for the well known maps, but I didn't know a couple of things on the maps I barely play. Can anybody locate scans of the guide?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Did anyone else read the little bit about MGO at the end of the May issue of EGM? I thought I was alone in thinking that it's pretty subpar.

From all the hype, even in part from all the raving here, I thought it would be a pretty excellent game. Sadly, almost every time I went on, it was, as complained about in the aforementioned article, just a matter of who autoaimed first. Aside from Sneaking Missions, they felt really brainless to me. Obviously, if you play against certain sets of people, you could get more out of it. However, for someone who just wants a quick match, chances are you'll just be in a button-holding fest. The extent of the viable strategies I've used in the games I've found myself in is hiding in the cardboard box. I've tried more (surely not all), but yeah, considering the other players, some more methodical strategems (read: FUN) are not very useful.

I think a huge part really is the fact that this is Metal Gear and that's something near and dear to a lot of people. It's neat to finally be in the guards' shoes against Snake or pit Ocelot against Sokolov, but I found the online experience very unfulfilling.

Well, it's not quite as simple as holding L1 and square the whole game. There are other stratgeies used quite abundantly. If you're running at an enemy, you can stop and aim in first person to get a headshot long before you can see their name above their head and get a lock on. You could throw a grenade at them. You could snipe. You could wait around a corner with a CQC weapon for some hapless enemy and CQC them, likely ensuring a kill. You could place some strategic claymores around the map or you could use the book and wait for a perfect opertunity to use it. The weapon you use makes a big difference too. Another thing is the tranq guns. In team battles, stunning the enemy can sometimes make a huge difference. Though you yourself might not get as many kills, the team as a whole is more likely to succeed (and team wins affect your rank just as much a kills apparently). Then of coarse there's the good ol' box trick as you so mentioned. The battles are just as fun with weapons limitations, such as knife only. Try a one on one battle, that uses alot more stealth tactics than the chaos-filled 8 person battles. There are also some less often used tricks, such as falling on an enemy to know them out. This game is pretty rich in strategy if you know how to use it.

I was speaking idiomatically.

But how often do you really see a one-on-one server or, lesser still, people who want to play one-on-one? In terms of Quick Matching, it's very rare and I try not to be to picky so that I can jump into a game.

Another thing I found odd and ironic was that I was looking forward to this since it was going to be the anti-Socom in the sense that the environs were more enclosed and in most modes, you would respawn and get back in the game quickly. In the end, the kills here were less satisfying than the really sluggish but rewarding kills in Socom.

In terms of strategies I've run into, I've seen the claymores as buffers trick but not much else. I really wish they had a really wide open level. Not sure if I played through all the maps though so there may be one I haven't seen, but otherwise, none of them seem effective for sniping.

You do know that you can create your own game right? You'd be surprised how fast people join on Snake server on busy nights. You can also search for games with specific peraameters. You can sometimes get lucky and find a one-on-one battle just by scrolling through the different hosts and finding a "1/2" players joined.

City Under Seige is great for sniping, but pretty much every sniping spot has at least one weakness. Usually snipers get sniped themselves pretty quick. Lost Forrest is good for sniping, and it features some nice foliage to hide in while you do it. Brown Town has a great road for sniping (you'd know which one if you saw it, it's really long). The only problem is that if the enemy starts getting sniped alot, they can come at you from your defenseless side if they take the trouble to take the long way around. You can try to counter this with defensive claymores as well as relying on your team-mates for defense since both ends of the road are near the team spawn points. The mountain level is almost sniper's paradise since it's a big open level (albiet, vertically challenged). The level with the log cabin is also pretty good for sniping. Pretty much every level has a good sniping point except the small enclosed levels, like the Killhouses.

When people throw out the auto-aim argument they seem to fail to realize that you can strife and wig out during the shooting, if done correctly, you will kill them. That and if two people auto-aim it's mostly about luck, that is to say that your bullets randomly fire in their general direction, and if you're unlucky they'll live, regardless of who started firing first.

Also, people who purely run/gun really are the weaker players, it's HORRIBLY easy to out-smart and essentially beat the crud out of them, even one-on-one. Don't forget you have a sub-weapon and an item. Grenades, Claymores and esspecially BOOKS can essentially alter the game in your favor.

That and first person is under used. Master it and you master the game. Everything that occurs in this game that appears unfair or "cheap" have ways around them. There is no single solitary strategy that can't be overcome, aside from PURE GODLY SKILL which doesn't exist in too many people, thank god.

I hate people that hate the shotgun. Anyone else encounter "No shotguns" in the title or comment of a game? Those that complain that the shotgun is a "noob gun" are themselves noobs. Sure it's annoying getting owned by the shotgun, but there are many easy ways around it, namely DON'T get close to people with shotguns! They are easily defeated at medium range.

So anyway, I just had a really good couple of hours. I dominated as the top player in a series of TDM and my team pretty much always won, however my rank never increased. Actually it was PIG yesterday and I lost it. When I started today I had no rank, and yet after about 2.5 hours of pure awesomeness on my part I still don't have a rank! I was also never a special character despite being the best player. WTF is this? Is there some option when creating a game to cause the players in it to not increase in rank?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Strafing is the key when taking on someone who has a shotgun. Those things are deadly when they catch you, but can't hit for crap if you stick to the enemy's sides.

The real danger in this game are the snipers. I'm still trying to find a foolproof strategy for countering them, but it seems all you can do is catch them off guard.

Hey guys, come Thursday night, I'll be free that night for some online games.
I'll set up a game in the Meryl room with "FUN IN THE SUN" as the the PW is "Funny". Same rules as posted above. I just want some some stress relief after writing a stupid final exam. It will be at about 12:00 AM Eastern Standard Time, since Friday is Good Friday and I can sleep in a bit.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

This sounds rather interesting... I'm glad my PS2 since I bought it rather recently about 5 months or so ago. It came with the adaptor...

So when you play online, what's the goal? To kill the other spies, is there co-op or what?

Can't forget rescue missions. Also, Capture is better than most CTF games. It's a kerotan, and there's only one on a map.
