Well, if Krelian goes before you leave, then you can go, otherwise we'll just have it be Hawkeye's turn and you can go after him. Thanks for the warning though.

I think the problem is you and Pangalin set a very high bar with your initial two posts, and that scared everyone off with the time commitment

Krelian, coming up on your two days for taking a turn. If Sunday rolls around, and you still haven't gone, its going to have to switch over to Hawkeye so we can keep this thing moving.

Got my laptop working again. Afterwards, I discovered that a new version of Quicktime introduced in a software update a few months ago inexplicably and completely broke the OS X version of Civ 4, so I had to grab the Windows version. Le sigh. ANYHOW.

Washington flourishes. In accordance with the city's new borders, its citizens felt free to settle its fringes; to cease their fishing endeavours, return to the land, and till instead the forests. The surplus of wood is allowing our monastery's construction to proceed without hitch.

The party of warriors we previously dispatched to the east had the misfortune to cross paths with a pack of panthers. I feared the worst; however, our men showed fortitude, and the beasts were felled - albeit not without cost.

Alone and disorientated, the last survivor of our regiment managed to stumble across a band of friendly tribals only too pleased to replenish our party's ranks. Our expedition ventures forth unabated.

This new addition to our forces abroad strengthened our resolve to further map this continent. No borders lie near this eastern peninsula, although to the north there exists an intriguing isthmus with the promise of livestock, and the potential for settlement...

Far to the northwest -

Our other scouting party remained sore from their encounter with the hostiles of this lawless land. Nevertheless, their ranks - or, rather, what was left of them - would not be broken by the cruel tundra. Nobly he onward traveled.

Through wandering, he discovered a body of water and a view into the outer forests of the Egyptian lands. Not daring to trespass, he resolved to further investigate the surroundings.

As a whole, our people are making satisfying progress.

The knowledge to work stone will be a boon to our infrastructure - and it leads directly into what I propose as our next technological focus:

Pottery will allow our people to proliferate unprecedentedly; no longer shall we see food spoiling all throughout Washington. Monasteries and granaries are a charitable match fit for the gods themselves!

Turbo, you're up. 2800 BC savefile

(I'm not trying to conflict with anyone's play style here - feel free to swap research to monotheism if there's a chance the computer might pick it up; I calculated that seeing as we've leapt ahead of Egypt and that we've had the luck of some free techs we might be able to nab pottery, quickly throw together a granary in Washington, and found Judaism not soon after - the population increase resulting from the granary would mean that we'd be able to put the Pyramids up sooner.)

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Sounds good. I'm not home yet but I'll be back tonight and take my turns. Looking good so far

Additional Spam:
While our warriors were sent into unknown territory, our smart men in Washington finally mastered the art of pottery making.

After this discovery was made we called for our priests to begin praying to whichever god or goddess is listening and to show us new ways of living. We hope an answer comes soon.

Busy busy Washington. Warriors exploring, priests praying, and builders building. Our Buddhist monastery is complete! With that completed and our new found mastery of pottery, we have decided to begin construction on a granary to better prepare for the upcoming season.

As our warrior made it over the next mountaintop, what did his eyes see at the bottom? Trouble.

We shall defend these mountains with our life!

and on the last turn

By the gods! Our prayers have been answered!

Our minds have been opened to a new faith and yet... We shall not chose to follow one at this time. Maybe our ever faithful priests can reach out again and discover yet another!

---------------

And that's the end of my ten turns. Sorry the 'rp' isn't awesome like Pang's. My first real shot at a game like this. I'm moving one of the warriors to the tribal village south of our town, another warrior is going to explore northeast of us. Building a granary and afterward I would suggest a worker to improve the land in preparation for chopping.
Also, sailing should be considered. With a lighthouse, all those water tiles get improved. 2 food 3 gold each.

HAWKEYE - Your turn. 2320 BC

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Alright. I'll hopefully do my turn tomorrow afternoon sometime - things are still busy but should have calmed down by then.

EDIT: anyone have any advice for what I should do? Are we trying to found as many religions as possible or build up a military? Mostly asking about what to build, as our lack of scouts and workers is confusing me.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Honestly, I'm beginning to think we need another town to buffer us, because at this point, if we're going to split production, and have one city be a wonder machine while the other ones continue with actual useful production, we're going to need to start it soon before we lose too many of the good early wonders to computers. We'll also need protection for them, as I'm worried that the animal -> barbarian swap is coming soon.

On research, I might go bronze working, so we can see if we have bronze nearby. If we do, then we can go for Hunting and make spearmen, otherwise we'll need Archery to get archers. After that, my thoughts lean towards priesthood or agriculture, as we don't appear to have any animals near us that need cultivation. Fishing won't be immediately useful because we're on an inland lake, which doesn't benefit from lighthouses. I agree that a worker for chop-hurrying of production will be useful.

Anyhow, those are my strat thoughts.

Edit: Also, I really want a religious wonder at some point here, because we need our first GP to be a Great Priest so we can get one of the religious special buildings. The Monastery we built will help ensure this, but I still worry.

I'm an expansionist at heart, so I'd say after the granary finishes up would be great. Also, if we're really close to getting a city growth when it finishes (like 1 turn) then wait for it. After that I'd start in on all the other stuff I wrote. With timing / luck, we might get bronze working when the settler finishes, and be able to aim him at a bronze deposit.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

sorry, forgot to look here while playing. made a worker because it was 4 or 5 turns faster and i wanted to get started on roads, and getting hold of the stone. in the end, nothing exploded, just need to sort out the info for your viewing pleasure.

edit: once again, my inability to to these internet things shines through. what should I use to upload the save game file?

Well, as I'm the next one up, I'll just PM you an email to send it to. If you want it public, you could also do something like rapidshare, sendspace, or you could sign up for one of the free websites that offer X amount of hosting. I tend to find the last option useful for posting pictures, in many cases, as long as they allow direct linking.

Edit: Also, not an issue on the strategy. We'll go on and that's half the fun of playing this way. You get to play with a style that's not just yours over and over. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to be able to check this til tomorrow, as I've got to take off.

Our people awoke from their slumber one day to find that another leader had moved on from this world. His replacement was to be a young new leader, lacking confidence and experience. If only they had a democracy, they thought. Then we could vote this fool out and get another leader. Unfortunately, with the development of such an idea still a few thousand years away, the new leader took power anyway.

The first question I was asked as the new Despot of the small nation of America (despite the nation’s logical existence being shaky at best due to considerable lack of historical accuracy in favor of keeping future Americans proud to have been a nation in 4000 BC) was what our warrior in the north should do.

Fighting was tempting - i knew that our men had not yet tasted battle and that they yearned to do so, but I decided that the 50% odds of victory were a large and unnecessary risk at this point, and chose to play it safe and tell our men to avoid a fight if they could. As our only scout in the region, their information is more important than the death of an annoying bear.

Upon investigating our internal affairs, I decided to make a tradeoff - 1 more turn to research priesthood in exchange for the granary being completed 2 turns faster. This would complete the granary in tandem with the growth of the city.

Some time later, our still alive scout reported something interesting -

Another small tribe! Hopefully they would not be as irritable as the last one our people encountered. Upon reaching them our people were greatly rewarded -

A new technology! Finally, our people could attach large pieces of cloth to their boats! What an ingenious technology!

The free money that the other tribe was also kindly accepted before the people of the village decided to live underground so as to get away from the pollution that the future world would bring. Or so they claimed. I don’t believe what those stupid seers say anyway - with them the end of the world is always right around the corner. Honestly.
We were soon able to discover something ourselves -

Yes, we had uncovered the secrets of the holy man. Now I set the nation to work discovering bronze working so that we could cut down all of the surrounding trees like a truly industrial nation. Nothing like the fresh smell of progress and freshly cut pines.

At this point our nation seemed to be running smoothly. Things were being built, learned, and explored. Upon checking in with some of our explorers, I found that one was trying to do this -

Clearly the man in charge of this outfit would be punished. We have no room for nutcases in our military. I told them to return in the direction of usefulness.

A few years later, a traveler came knocking at the palace door. He told tales of faraway lands, saying that he’d been around the world (he clearly had been hanging around the captain of our western scout for too long), but he told me this -

We are apparently an intelligent people. I just laughed at the man and sent him on his way. His statements didn’t really matter, but it was interesting nonetheless. But I couldn’t keep someone who said he’d been around the world in my palace! Some of the craziness might rub off on me!

And so my time as ruler ended. We’re not in bad shape, but expanding soon might be a good idea. Found some resources, some clam in the northeast and pigs all over the place. Washington’s borders also expanded, so we have access to the stone now. I’ve also deleted all of the orders that units have so Araes has a clean slate.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I downloaded Civ IV after reading through this thread and just launched into it without doing the tutorial. Luckily it's not so different from Civ 1 (The last one I played) and the automation of worker units and such helps a lot.

Next time you play one of these games, add me to the list, I shoudl have got the hang of it enough by then to not do too much damage in ten turns...

Hawkeye: Could you resend the save file for the turn. I stupidly transposed the e and a in my email address, so some random guy probably just got a Civ4 save file. I've resent you a PM as well with the correct email. Also, nice writeup, and should be able to take my turn tonight or tomorrow depending on save file.

Shin: If you're interested in joining up, I can always put you on the reserves for this one. We've already had a couple people have to drop in and out. If not, I'll put you onto a future game.

Cheers but I think I'll just watch this one. I've never actually been any good at these games so jumping in at Noble level might not be a brilliant idea. In my own game on Chieftan I've got to the point where the map's all been discovered and although I've got like destroyers and bombers and everyone else has macemen, I just find myself randomly building improvements to my existing cities and upgrading my defensive units all the time. Playing for a Spaceship win is always my favoured method over anything more aggressive.

But I digress, I'll keep watching this one and then play next time.

I suppose, thinking about it, this format could easily enough be transferred to other turn based games. Anyone here still play Master of Orion 2?

If you have destroyers while everyone has macemen, you're playing way below your skill level My skill level tops out at Warlord. After that (Noble), I can't beat up the AI anymore.

Have any of those macemen killed your tanks?

They did a pretty solid job on some grenadiers I had but were ultimately defeated by my knights, ironically. I thought I'd use up all my obsolete military units capturing a city that was encroaching on my borders and barely managed it. I'll probably build up a big strike force then go kill the Chinese as they have their own continent. What year does the game run to anyway? I think I'm on about 1920 at the moment.
