Of Spock and Communism: Civ IV Succession Game

Discussion of Baba Yetu reminded me I had this game, and a game or two later, how much I hate that bitch Isabella. In that spirit, putting forward the idea of a succession game of Civilization IV.

Game Has Started - Current Player's Turn - Pang

We are currently at 6 interested players with 5 player slots.

Turn order progresses as listed below. Reserves are for players who drop.

Basic Concept
For those who haven't tried succession games:

Turn Progression
From a lower post, the general turn order is:
Quote:

- Get save game file from prior player (emailed or uploaded to a website)
- Play your 10 turns (remembering to make images of important / funny stuff)
- Mail / Upload save file from completed turn.
- Create a post on GFF describing what happened during your turn.
Game Setup
Since I'm a bit out of practice, I'm proposing a game with the settings of:

Version: Civ IV vanilla (patched up to 1.74 [found at Firaxis])
  • Note: Some folks with DirectX9 older than August 2007 may need to have THESE DLLs extracted to their Civ IV base directory for the 1.74 patch.
Difficulty: Noble
Scenario: Custom Continents (3 continents)
Size: Standard (normal enemy slots)
Victory Conditions: Conquest, Domination, Space Race (screw timeouts, culture, and diplomacy)
Variants: None
Time Limit: 1 day to post "Got It" and 2 days to submit turn report and post game file for download.

If we have a lot of interest, I'll be capping it at five regular players plus extras if we have drops.
We have our five starting players, we are now taking reserves for players who drop.

For leader and civilization, I'm open to anything with a reasonable strategy behind it. I like Roosevelt and his Ind/Org combo, but am also interested in trying out Mali with Spi/Fin and seeing if we could get a single city with multiple founded religions.

Current Players:
Araes
Pangalin
Rychord
Turbo
Hawkeye

Reserves:
Zergrinch

I'd be up for this. The elimination of culture victory makes me sad, but I guess it's a lot harder to pull off in vanilla.

Araes Apr 4, 2009 07:44 PM

I personally just tend to find culture victories very anti-climactic, much like timeout victories. Plus, they always seem to have the good timing of happening right as the panzers are cresting that last hill before the fields of Paris.

Zergrinch Apr 4, 2009 09:19 PM

Why not go for sheer pyrotechniques and go all-out for domination?

Although, my Civ games are typically peaceful, with victory achieved via space race. As such I usually go for a combination of industrious and financial - traits by Shi Huang Di if I'm not mistaken.

I'd love to join, but must decline since I suck and can NOT beat the computer on Noble mode :3:

Isabella, oh how I hated that backstabbing religious bitch

The Wise Vivi Apr 4, 2009 09:23 PM

Hmmm, interesting concept. I am a huge fan of Civilization 4 (and the whole series in general) and I might be in. How do we actually go about this in terms of playing?

Zergrinch Apr 4, 2009 09:26 PM

Mail the save game to each other, I assume. There's an entire subforum in CivFanatics dedicated to games like these.

Scent of a Grundle Apr 4, 2009 09:30 PM

As much as I'd love to join, I'm going to have to decline for the same reason as Zerg - after 10 turns our Civ would probably be a smoldering pile of rubble.

I, too, like the cultural victory, but that's probably just because my play style is:

-Build three or four cities
-make a few troops to defend them (maybe)
-go nuts with the wonders
-when i get a great artist, build a city next to an opponent's city and steal it through culture
-my empire of 7 or 8 cities starts to build military because that's all that's left to do
-win cultural victory shortly after beginning the conquest of everyone else's longbowmen with my tanks

That's what I get for being a pacifist, i suppose.

Yeah, I have been to that site, but have never checked that part out before. This is kind of like the Simcity 4 thing we had.

The unmovable stubborn Apr 4, 2009 09:31 PM

Oh, come on, this is Gamingforce, sucking at games is no justification for not playing

Scent of a Grundle Apr 4, 2009 09:33 PM

Alright, fine Pang, I'll sign up to play if we need more people, but if I get blown to bits I'm blaming you

This would actually be a lot of fun if it worked

Araes Apr 4, 2009 11:41 PM

Vivi: Although Zerg did already provide a nice link, to answer specifics, a general turn would go:

- Get save game file from prior player (emailed or uploaded to a website)
- Play your 10 turns (remembering to make images of important / funny stuff)
- Mail / Upload save file from completed turn.
- Create a post on GFF describing what happened during your turn.

Ex - 150 AD: "Before the 1000 horns of our victorious legions, the people of Rome fled, and as response for the spite of Caesar and his idiotic demands for tribute we salted the earth, pillaged their lands, and spat on his throne" (Captured Rome, Sacked Rome, Eliminated Caesar / Romans)

Hawkeye / Zerg: Don't worry too much about the skill requirement in this. If we win, that's great, but its mostly just about having fun playing Civ and seeing all the crazy stuff other folks do. Plus, there will be other people playing who can offer advice. You can do that in the game thread, or do things like put Pings on the map that note good places to build or offer advice for the next player.

You've got two days for your turn, so if something bad happens like "Oh god, barbarians everywhere, no city defense, gah!" then you can ask folks what to do.

Zerg: Nothing wrong with a peaceful win, which is why I left space in. I just wanted to leave the win options where people are doing things every turn. Makes for more interesting posts. Personally, I tend to be a mid-game warmonger, rushing tech until I hit cavalry and then spamming them, rifleman, and grenadiers. However, going for horse archers, knights, and longbowmen isn't a bad path for an earlier version either.

The Wise Vivi Apr 5, 2009 12:05 AM

Ok, ok. I am in, if possible to fit me in.

Should be a good time!

Scent of a Grundle Apr 5, 2009 12:09 AM

Hang on a second, I just realized something.

I probably can't play with you guys, because I can't play the normal version of Civ IV. My version (which is more or less stolen off of a friend) only works if I'm playing the beyond the sword expansion - which sucks. Sorry, but unless I can get hold of his Civ disc when I'm home for easter, my name's gonna have to be scratched.

The Wise Vivi Apr 5, 2009 12:10 AM

Why don't you get a no-cd code for it? Or is the original not installed at all?

Scent of a Grundle Apr 5, 2009 12:14 AM

i've got the original installed, but can't play without the disc. I'm gonna talk to my friend when I'm home, he knows more about these things than i do.

as for getting a no-cd crack, i can't torrent here, and i don't trust most of those sites with the ten .rar files (i'm also not sure what to do with them). I really don't know that much about computers - more than most, to be sure, but i also have a habit of wrecking things if i don't know what i'm doing.

Araes Apr 5, 2009 12:19 AM

Good to hear Vivi, I'll add you to the list. Hawkeye, I'll see what I can do on the no-cd front, as I may be able to locate the right one. Probably be Monday though before I can devote some time to that search. Also, may not need a full week for signups if there is this much interest.

I PM'd Haweye. I got a no-cd that should work hitch free. If not, then I will bug you to find another one anyway. ;)

Zergrinch Apr 5, 2009 12:22 AM

Mount an ISO from GameCopyWorld, apply SafeDisc 4 Hider, and you're good to go.

Links:
Civilization 4 ISO
Safedisc 4 Hider

Also, put me down on reserve then, Araes. But remember Araes and Pangalin, you asked for it! :D

I lobby for a ban on tech trading. I hate it when the AI shares everything among themselves for relationships++

Scent of a Grundle Apr 5, 2009 12:56 AM

IT LIVES

props to vivi for making things easy

Araes Apr 5, 2009 11:40 AM

Question for those signed up, since people appear to be using hacks: Is patching up to 1.74 is going to be impossible?

I wanted to do it, because it renders more efficiently and speeds up the game, but if that can't be done, we can always go with a flat 1.0 version.

The unmovable stubborn Apr 5, 2009 11:57 AM

Hacks? The fake ISO shouldn't cause any problem at all in applying patches.

Araes Apr 5, 2009 12:18 PM

I was thinking more with the no-cd's, as those often have a version they've been created to replace. My impression was Vivi and Hawkeye were both using no-cd's for a specific version.

Krelian Apr 5, 2009 12:45 PM

I'd love to be a part of this. Redownloading like the fist of the north star.

Are we going to be playing with Warlords/BtS?

e: So I suck at reading. Ah well, vanilla's grand too (and easier on my limited hard drive capacity).

Scent of a Grundle Apr 5, 2009 01:00 PM

not to mention the other versions don't have the epic opening menu music.

Freelance Apr 5, 2009 01:56 PM

Hot damn, I just bought the game (the Complete version with all expansions) while I was in the UK and have been playing the heck out of it since I came back. I'm currently trying to get Squirrel to get it too for multiplayer and then I see this thread :3

Is this going to be like SC4 (love that game too by the way) where it's once a week to play our turns? That would be preferable for me. I wish we still had that game going. It was really fun.

I updated Beyond the Sword to the latest so I suppose I need a separate patch for the base Civ IV?

P.S. Have any of you tried that fantasy mod, Fall from Heaven 2? It's pretty cool.
P.P.S. I suck too at the game but the object here is to have fun.

Update: Okay it looks like base Civ IV is already patched to latest, so I'm ready for this.
