Region free wont happen bacause of the incompatibilities of PAL/NTSC and that's something no costumer support wants to deal with. It could happen on the 360/PS3 since the 720p everywhere means the same number of lines universaly but both console also support regular TV so no luck.
Even if they didn't the 720p standard has floating rafresh rate like on regular TV, like 720p50(Hz) and 720p60(Hz). This is probably to make todays TV shows of each region work without using 3:2 pulldown (inserting frames into each second of the image to make it 30 Fps/60Hz) but unfortunly screws our region free gaiming.

Nonetheless it can still be done, but companies don't do it so they can rip us more money based on regions

Bullshit. NTSC compatibility has not been a problem in Europe for years because virtually every TV here can easily display both 50 and 60Hz image and no American would ever import a European game anyway. A lot of PAL releases offer a 60Hz option too, so Americans would still be able to play those particular titles if they really wanted.

I don't see region free happening for Nintendo, but it would be a dream come true if it did. There really are no other obstacles left other than publishers being greedy.

How ya doing, buddy?

Or the fact that piracy is a serious problem everywhere. Nintendo stopped pirates for an horrendously long time with the Cube, and I'll bet they want to do the same with the Wii.

Guys, about the 512mb storage and VC games.

The largest N64 game ever created, Conker's Bad Fur Day, was 64 megabytes. You could store approximately 8 of those. (The only other game that reached that filesize was Resident Evil 2.) 90% of N64 games are a lowly 8 megabytes. You could store 64 of those. I sincerely doubt anyone wants to download 64 games from the N64's library, given that it didn't have more than about 20-30 really good games.

You're all literally worrying about nothing.

I count 3 games I've bought in Denmark since the beginning of 2005 (5!).
Screw Denmark, they can't compete on the international market, and damn, has the world grown smaller...

I also just got a Xbox 360 controller for two thirds of the danish price - delivered to my front door yesterday.
Importing has in time become my only option.

I'm still too much of a pussy to import a console though... =P

Granted most TV can do 60Hz but others can't and I'm not seeing them risking that and it's not just the 60Hz problem because that can be easly solved inside the game by limiting the frame rate to 50 FPS.

The problem is (also) in the rest of the specs, the NTSC has 525 lines while PAL has 625 lines meaning that a USA game has a diferent resolution from a European game, and while this can be solved in-game too it's harder and brings other problems so diferent builds are always used.

Also, the color system used is diferent (see NTSC color jokes) and this is a big problem too, this one can be solved by the console by codifing the signal according to your settings.

Bottom line, I'm sure they could do it (and some XBox 360 games do I heard) but they don't usually do it because it would make the console and the games a tad more expensive and because they woudn't be able to rip our pockets like they do today
Also for us europans it normally doesn't make the games that cheaper, we have to pay import duties, pray that game doesn't get caught in the customs, that doesn't get lost overseas, wait weeks for the game to arrive...
USA/Jap imports are only for non available in Europe games.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

But the problem is that the space being used can quickly add up. VC games alone likely won't take a significant chunk out of the built in memory (unless they make disc-based games downloadable), but you have to remember that they will be sharing the same space as game saves, content downloads, updates, etc. Halo 2's extra maps took up almost 200 megs of space by themselves! Even save games can take up a lot of space, look at past gen games like KOTOR or Otogi. Since Nintendo themselves was pushing that "you can download on the console when it's on standby mode while you sleep", I don't think it would be unlikely that we'll see many titles that take advantage of the ability to add content to the game. 512 megs probably more than enough for people who only buy a few games for the console, but most of the concern is for those of us who buy a few dozen throughout the console's lifetime as well as VC games and get all those extra content packs when they're available.

Good. That will push developers to economize on space, which would also decrease on delivery times and cost, as well.

Don't forget that there is still time between now and Q4. Nintendo can still realize this and upgrade to a harddrive (which would not cost much more at all). Nintendo seems to be full of suprises this year, so why should hardware be an exception?

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Uhh, no, it just means that when they have 512MB of space to work with, they'll get lazy and expect you to have no other games saved on it. Look at Madden on the Gamecube.

He's trying nothing 'cause no one every buys these things anyway, only on Nintedo's silly mind they belive people will spend money on assessories (pun and typo intended)
The worst thing is that they might force them on us by shipping them with the game and dispite the common(??) belive these don't come for free.

Pokemon Colossum uses 48 blocks! Ouch! That's why I've never played that game dispite having it since I got the console.

It is common belive (oh, right, you meant belief) that the accessories do come for free is because they pretty much do. If you are paying the same price for a game and accessory that you are for just a game, then the accessory is free. If you want to buy the game without the accessory then Nintendo will lower their normal price, not to cover the price of the accessory, but to give people incentive to buy if they already have the accessory.

I don't think their has been a case where Nintendo will charge extra for an accessory that is required for a game.

I just remembered something...

You might not have to worry about savegame space taking up the 512MB flash. Remember this?

http://media.revolution.ign.com/arti...g_3233326.html

Oh yeah, memory card ports. So it is quite possible that the Wii games could save to the same memory cards we've been using the past 5 years!!

i've had a memory card 59 for awihle now, and i'm probably not getting another memory card. why? because by the time i get a game that actually requires more space than i have, i can delete old games that i'll probably never play again (or that i'll want to play through next time instead of continuing with a saved game after the end of the game).

There's still time. But not that much time. I seriously doubt you'll see the Wii getting an HD. Maybe bigger flash memory. Maybe.

Yeah, Wii isn't getting a HD. According to Microsft and Sony, a 20 GB HD costs at least $100. Besides, SD cards are cheap and as BurningRanger said, VC games aren't going to take up massive amounts of storage. If you can pick up a 512 MB card, that's a gig of stroage right there. Enough for hundreds of VC games.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?
Old May 13, 2006, 12:17 PM #525 of 670
Besides, you may be able to transfer those games to your computer via the SD cards to make more room. I really wonder how Nintendo is going to prevent piracy this time around.

Double Post:
And that looks awesome, Infernal! =D

Pangya looks like some fun arcade golf. It's a shame it won't be going online but if that means for a better offline experience then so be it.
