For me FF12 had a so so plot that bounced from political to man VS god and it wasn't focused, and the lack of character interaction also hurt this.
If it was man vs god, we would've been raped, thoroughly. Notice that no one so much as attempted to attack any of them after they stand in the way (example: Venat and... several scenes).

Characters weren't focused on because they were, well, meaningless on the grand scale of things. Rightly so, as the main point was to off the cat at the top and bring peace again. The only one that was somewhat important was the princess, and that was to for her to regain the throne. But enough about XII...

Quote:
The idea that we play a part in destroying mankind in FF13 (perhaps either for greater good like purifying the world or we're just plain evil) sounds intriguing and appealing to me. And the idea of a character not just summoning a summon, but BECOMING one makes it sound even more bad ass. Also love the idea of each character having a specific element in their power, makes it so each character HAS to be unique unlike FF7-12 (minus 9) which the only unique element is overdrives attacks.
You know, that's alternately good and bad about the summons. They might gimp them like they did in FFXII, which would render them completely useless or a liability. On the other hand, done right and without a damage limit (or at least, not the classic 9999) and with stats leaning in one direction or another would make them interesting.

Quote:
And her codename could be something the people gave her, she was using more gravity elements than Lightening in the trailer (and fire attacks too), so I think they gave her that name cause she's fast as lightening, which she was. She took down a whole group of soldiers in a few seconds!
Well, what if it not only does each person gain a summon/abilty to transform, but also a tendency to lean towards abilities/spells/stats that the summon (now part of them) likes. One example being Ifrit, could make someone Fire-element dominant, attack dominant and let them learn fire type skills earlier than others (or mainly/only fire type abilities).

This way, every character wouldbe useful. Notice, I didn't put in "elemental weakness" as many wouldn't like that. Or... would ya'll prefer to moderate characters like this?

How ya doing, buddy?

For the people of Cocoon, Pulse is a frightening place. Those who come into contact with it are believed to be elements of a plot to invade Cocoon and are banished from the protections of the Cocoon realm by the "holy" government and its army. The original E3 trailer depicted a group of people who seemed to be confined on a train. These people had come into contact with Pulse and were being quarantined.

Cocoon is protected by crystals. This may not necessarily be the case for the rest of the games in the Fabula Nova Crystalis series, but the crystals in FFXIII are more than just shiny stones with magic abilities. They have the ability to create real life objects. They make life easy for people in Cocoon by creating machines and living creatures.

The relationship between Cocoon and Pulse can be thought of as this, according to director Motome Toriyama. First, there was Pulse, a dangerous world where people reside under the fear of monster attack. Cocoon was made when the crystals considered what would be an appropriate living space for people forced to reside in the world of Pulse.

As mentioned in our writeup on the Jump trailer, the female character who is assumed to be FFXIII's main character is known as Lightning, although that's not her real name. A battle expert with mastery of gun, sword, hand-to-hand, and magic based combat, Lightning knows little about herself. In fact, she's not even sure of her real name, and Toriyama says that we should look forward to finding out the reason for this as part of the storyline. Lighting was once a high ranking official in an organization of some form. Now, according to the prologue that kicks off the trailer, she's been selected as an enemy to all of man kind and will bring destruction to the world.

The trailer also served as the debut of a second character, a blonde-haired guy who speeds in on a motorcycle as Lightning finds herself surrounded by government troops. While the magazine doesn't provide any details on this character, it does provide some surprises about his motorcycle. Famitsu reveals that the bike is a transformed version of Shiva, the water-based summon spell that makes a brief appearance in the Jump trailer. In FFXIII, Shiva takes the form of a sister pair, and both sisters are made up of bike parts, complete with a wheel behind the head. Toriyama wouldn't spill the details, but hinted that you might be able to ride the transformed Shiva in battle, in addition to using it as a means of transportation when outside of battle.
Final Fantasy Transformers confirmed?

It kind of lends some light to the theory that miss Lightning can turn into Ixion, due to the logo's depiction. Craziness... I want to see more of this in motion.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I really like the idea of summon fuse with some technology ^^ it's an interesting idea and it seem to go with the FFXIII universe.

I'm not sure about the part of shiva being a motorcycle, well it could be cool, but I sure hope that summon will not just become some kind of transportation and still be able to summon them as magic beast for offense in battle. I hope they will return to be as strong as they were, lately I find the summon in the recent FF to be really less powerful unlike they were before.

I wonder if other summon will have this ability to transform themself in other things ^^

oh I forgot to add: only thing wrong... shiva is suppose to be the ice goddess >.> let the water to Leviathan XD

I thought Nomura had already said that "Lightning" won't be the main character?

Also the summons changing into vehicles might be alright. It'd be a new and unique way to travel this new world of FFXIII, which is something Square is reknowned for doing with FFs.

Now that I know more about the story of FFXIII, I'm wanting it more than ever now. This really will be a great game (although I'm still pushing for Versus)

And as a sidenote, I despise this new character Nomura conjured up. This, from what I have seen so far, appears to be a Seifer look-a-like. Nice originality.

Versus is starting to sound interesting. With what has been shown and now the new information that a main component of the battle system is the ability to teleport, it sounds like we're going to get a game with a heavy amount of battle flair which may put even Kingdom Hearts II to shame.

Better quality FFXIII Jump scans

Ok, after getting into the 8th page I didn't feel like reading into the thread much more... but, this intruiged me.

As far as Final Fantasy Agito XIII goes for the mobile game, considering here in the US we're a good 3-4 years behind in cell phone technology compared to Japan, it's likely not going to be released here. Unless the iPhone is willing to pick that up as a capability...

Again, sorry for the post regarding a 7-month old post. Didn't really feel like reading pages 9-20 after all that. =P

I'll try to scrounge around for an update in some latest Jpneze magazine I can try to get my hands on this weekend and see if there's a clearer update for XIII.

Final Fantasy XIII demo this year
Added on 18/01/2007.
In the latest issue of Dengeki, Square Enix confirmed that a Final Fantasy XIII demo will be out sometime this year.

When questioned about the release of the demo, the Square Enix dev team stated, "'We are hoping to have a playable demo ready for E3 in 2007." Since E3 has been downsized as of this year, only invited studios, press, and retailers may attend the event, which may cause Square Enix to hold off a public showing until the Tokyo Game Show, for example, later this year.

Until further notice from Square Enix, we can expect the demo to appear at E3 2007.

The story seems kind of interesting, but it seems like one of those that will be better upon playing, rather then reading about it. I wonder how far the 'shared mythology' will extend to.

I just thought of something: In reference to this picture: http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/5...mitsu01zv6.jpg

It seems to me that Lightning is designed as a Female Cloud, Agitio looks like an older Kingdom Hearts' Sora, and Versus XIII looks like a militarized Squall. I know the character designers have their personal touches, but hopefully the supporting characters are more diversified in appearance.

However, TRANSFORMER SHIVA = WIN.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

it's because the character designer since FFVII till now has been the same fucking guy. Tetsuya Nomura who IMO is one of the worst things to happen to Squaresoft. All FF characters are going to look strikingly similar to prior characters until Nomura is fired. let's not forget his usage of horrible looking belt & buckles on nearly every character.

My bad. That's probably why those two FF are the best ones since VI and most likely the reason they are hated on by people who generally obsess over VII,VIII, and X. Nomura did help with Character Designs in FF XI, including story NPCs.

You're over generallizing...

Tetsuya Nomura replaced Yoshitaka Amano, after Amano was either fired or quit... (Mostly likely quit, because he still serves as an outside contractor -> Logos and such)...

People who are over obsessed with Nomura games are usually knew to the series. And IMO FFVII still is a great game. And Don't blame the characters* for the reason the games bombed...

Tetsuya is just a character designer until recently... KH and FFXIII...
His style is so generic, details don't affect the over all look. ALSO...

FFVII, VIII, X... had a more "mature" style of his character designing career...

only Until KH first released did his style change... to a 5 year old cartoon-anime style... (Brave Fencer included)...

FFVIII, kinna let me down, so don't say people loved it... FFX was just a graphics whore... so don't blame new people to be awed... Argh...

FFIX,FFXII, were only successful because of their unique aspects not characters... IMO Zidane and the whole style of CC, IX, (chibi-esque) style is really lame... Yet, FFIX was an amazing story...

Tetsuya is still young, and he'll get better I hope...

I do agree that the 2nd character does look too much like Siefer... like an KHII -> tranposition....

News on FF13 battle system!

And its just as I thought too when I saw the trailer. Chained up attacks that people can customise and choose, meaning the animation each time is DIFFERENT!

Thats hot.

Source: http://ff-xiii.net/

Quote:
March 2, 2007 - We've gotten used to seeing Tetsuya Nomura, Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama in interviews regarding Final Fantasy XIII, but a new face joined the executive staff for the latest feature on Japan's most anticipated PS3 title. The latest issue of Japan's monthly Ge-maga magazine is home to an interview with the three FFXIII mainstays, along with a newcomer, Tosirou Tsuchida. Following his work on Front Mission and Final Fantasy X, Tsuchida is taking charge of the battle system in Final Fantasy XIII.

Before getting into the details of his latest creation, Tsuchida gave some insight into his previous work with the Final Fantasy series. Back at the start of Final Fantasy X's development, he was told that he could do whatever he pleased with the game's battle system. He ended up asking if he could do away entirely with the ATB (Active Time Battle) system for which the Final Fantasy series is known. This caused an emergency meeting within Square. The result was that Tsuchida wasn't allowed to completely do away with the ATB system, resulting in that game's CTB (Count Time Battle) system.

This time, Tsuchida was asked from the start to create a flashy, speedy battle system. He felt that the command-based systems that have been used for previous Final Fantasy games wouldn't allow for this. However, Square Enix wanted a battle system that was as fast as an action game while allowing the player to input commands. That's apparently what we'll be getting in FFXIII.

The battle system is still considered an ATB system, complete with time flowing by as you input commands. However, the actual means of input has changed a bit and, according to Tsuchida, will now allow for more control options. You'll be able to, for example, select between carrying out a simple slash, or charging and then slashing. Some characters will be able to combine magic with standard attacks. And all of this is somehow connected to a new animation system that will blend individual motions to result in a single smooth motion.

Final Fantasy XIII's battle system may share a few points in common with the Final Fantasy XII system. Rather than a standard encounter-based system where battle begins with the allies and enemies in a face off, Tsuchida suggested that FFXIII's battles will begin with the player noting, "Oh, here's an enemy."

Players will be able to change the battle conditions to an extent. Tsuchida gave the example of a player considering what can be done in order to create a winning situation for an upcoming battle.

This doesn't mean we'll be getting an evolved version of the FFXII system either. Toriyama stated that the FFXIII battle system will be something that's not quite encounter based and not quite seamless. Players will have a new way of getting into fights with enemies.

Although Ge-maga got a couple of pages worth of comments from him, Tsuchida managed to keep most of the specifics on the battle system to himself. He wouldn't even confirm if players will be inputting commands for ally characters, or if they'll just be in control of a single character (his response to this question was "no comment.").

Toriyama did, however, refer to the battle system as a "party battle system" as he went on to describe how he wants the game's cast to appear in battle without straying away from their roles in the scenario. This latter point seems to be of prime importance to the FFXIII combat system. It seems that battles in FFXIII are going to be more meaningful than those of previous FF games.

Outside of your main party characters, Tsuchida wants to make the enemies that you encounter in battle more wholly connected to the main game. Scenario and battle should be more closely connected, he feels, and so the enemies will change based on the conditions of the scenario. As an example, he mentioned players moving through an area that's being searched by the army. You'll end up encountering the appropriate type of enemy for this situation, and may even get shot at.

An enemy's specialty and habitat will change based on the location. In the case of an enemy requiring thought and feelings, you can expect to encounter things that aren't strictly "monsters."

In addition to moving differently based on the situation, an enemy's "category" will also change. Enemies in FFXIII are categorized with much detail, Tsuchida revealed. Kitase (who didn't speak much during the interview) made it clear just how much detail we can expect. Battalions will have their own personnel chart, with each soldier having his own background story.

Closing off the Ge-maga feature, Kitase made mention of the fabled "White Engine," the next generation engine Square Enix is using for Final Fantasy XIII. He hinted that Square Enix is considering using the engine for games after Final Fantasy XIII. The recent announcement of the company's plans for the Unreal Engine 3 caused some concern that Final Fantasy XIII would be the first and last sighting for the internally developed toolkit.

You know, a long time ago I had envisioned a battle system where the enviroment could greatly dictate on how you attack enemies, with a seamless transition to battle.

For example: You see the enemy far away, by Climbing up on top of a roof, and then jumping down and attacking with a blade on an unsuspecting enemy, you can get the drop on them. Then by rolling to avoid counter-fire and then switching to a gun and firing at the enemy's support from behind a barrel or the side of a building, you can control the pace and flow of battle. Suppose you're at the side of a building. You can run around to the other side and take out the support with a suprise rolling grenade on the ground, or perhaps you throw down a flash grenade and blitzkrieg the enemy and force them into a CQC situation.

I think this battle engine, along with the heroine's dual Gun/Sword weapon, will make that long-ago idea, possible.

Eh, I'm not so sure about that. People will just bitch about some characters' movesets sucking or they want more flexibility/customization.

I think they do something akin to FFT, where your character has their own unique moveset as well as a secondary set from a pool of jobs everyone can learn (and even then, certain abilities/jobs would be open to certain characters only).

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

If we're gonna talk about character development systems, I'd love to see one something akin to the following:

Each individual character has certain specific traits (higher magic ability, higher strength, etc.)

All characters are equally able to choose a class (knight, thief, mage, etc.)

Each character will develop into a secondary, upper-tier class that is more specific based on both what job they choose and what their innate talents are (higher intelligence as a trait + knight as a job = something like a paladin or a dragoon, perhaps.)

If it's been done before, cool. I couldn't tell ya where, but I like that sort of balance whilst maintaining some individuality. I think that's something that would be possible on the next-gen systems -- namely, the PS3. With the possible inclusion of downloadable content (new classes, weapons, skills) and the extra storage of both the Blu-Ray disc and the hard drive, I'd say the PS3 is a great machine for exploring those sorts of branching opportunities.

How ya doing, buddy?
