Actually to argue this, every other piece of text in the menu is in english. Eg: Information, Aerial, V Strike, Attack, Fire, Thunder, Defend, etc. There's even a spelling error, Blizzrad anyone? I mean I'd think a Japanese RPG wouldn't normally have that much english in it (I'd imagine they'd be in katakana if there are english words), especially for a menu system.

Anyway, I'm sure we're all in agreement that "Lightning" is definitely a name that's not meant to be. And that it relates to, possibly, weapon element.

I still don't see why they didnt give the names of either main leads in both FF13 and VS 13. I mean, unlike Roxas in KH2, I doubt the names are spoilers. They withheld Roxas name till its released for plot reasons, but since this is a new game, theres no reason to conceal the names.

There are no Ls in the Japanese language. Every L sound would be an R, try again.

Maybe Nomura enjoys self-sabotaging, if so her name should be Fulgur (latin for lightning).

That'd be so great. I'd buy 7 copies.

One of the reasons I think they won't choose "Lightning" is because it's just a too common word with too much "impact".
Cloud is a common word as well, but I thought it fit the character. It's one syllable and a five letter word, which is ok for a name. It's also not as "physical" as "Lightning". Cloud as a name makes a character more abstract than "Lightning" would do.
Squall is a rather uncommon word. At least, I have never seen it used as either a noun or a verb. I didn't even know it had a physical meaning until a few years ago.
But I thought Zidane was a misplaced name. It reminds me too strong of Zinedine Zidane, the french soccer player... but anyway.

How ya doing, buddy?

I think people need to learn that not all image hosting sites will host pics forever, its best to save them immediatly, and host it somewhere that you cna rely on. I use photobucket.

No see I was just saying that there are examples out there of Japanese Games featuring english words/character names despite being in Japanese otherwise, probably has to do with the love of the english language by them (As some in english speaking countries tend to like French as its 'romantic',) because they (Japs) see the English language as stylish. What I don't like is the possible name of the character for FFXIII, "Lightning".

lol: Falgua? It sounds like the name of a town, not a person.

For name suggestions: How about something like "Tesla" as in Telsa Coils? XD
or (since I mentioned French up above), how about éclair? French for Lightning, and a name that HAS been used as a girl's name before (in an anime series called Kiddy Grade).

I was speaking idiomatically.

Eclair? Unless she's full of cream, and being the fanboys you all are, wouldn't you hope that were true, that name would be pretty silly.

Silly it might be, but Eclair is a lot better then Lightning. I suggested it because it was french for lightning.

Maybe you can suggest something better then?

A. No.
That question is regarding the difference between Irvine's weapon (where you have to load a certain type of ammo) and Squall's sword. It's talking about gameplay conventions, not the actual weapon in their universe. Basically, it means that Squall has infinite ammo.

Meh, we've already got a Paine. So close spelling.

Then again, they did do Sephiroth, Seifer, and Selphie...

No, Because we already have Paine =p

--edit--
heh, Jazzflight beat me to it. ahh well.

But jokes aside, Rayne I could deal with. There are some other weather related names too: Dawn, Gale, Virga (Rain that does not reach the ground), Drizzle, Tidus (Tide of Water).

Interestingly, I disovered this little nugget of Trivia: Regen is a Dutch/German word for Rain, and considering that rain falls not all at once, but for a period of time, I suppose its fitting that Regen heals over time as well.

There was also a Raine from FFVIII. The "water" names also included Squall and Laguna.

Since the V Strike is highlighted like that, and the ATB cost is next to Lighting, I'd say Lighting is either the name of the (special) attack or the elemental for it (or all of her attacks). You can see tiny bolts coming out of the gun as she shoots during one of the (non FMV) battle sequences.

I originally would have agreed. The European looking setting and dungeon exploration seemed very unappealing, but I was completely swept away by the incredibly gripping and rich plot, art direction and combat system. You kept playing the dungeons and towns just to get to the next cutscene and find out what happened next.

This was posted on another forum by a someone named Saj, with really interesting info.

Quote:
I attended E3 This year and during the special theater showing by tickets they showed all kinds of trailers including the Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 and the three trailers for the 3 Final Fantasy 13 games.

The first one is a longer version of what is available for download staring the pink haired girl. This one flows much better and its more obvious that she has some sort of magical ability (or tool) that allows her to suspend her gravity which shows to look like blue waves of pulsating light. The graphics were so good it was really difficult to tell which was the the 3D cut scene and which was the in game graphics.

The action was her fighting inside this train and with a large weapon creature. (looks similar to emerald weapon from FF7)

The nariation makes a mention of those who become so powerfull that are they people or are they demi gods?

The next trailer was for Final Fantasy verses XIII. This one plays some beautiful depressing opera music with a deep female voice singing in another language. The opening nariation is about a kingdom and a liniege that strives to remain independent from the rest of the world looking to take it over and their use of crystals to protect themselves. Also that it is directed by Nomura and done with the staffs of Kingdom Hearts and Advent children.

It opens with a young grey haired, red eyed man in black sitting on a throne looking like his dog just died. It lingers on his depressed state for some quite time before he stands up and walks outside. At the entrance are some fallen guards and at the base of the stairs there is a large group of men wearing knight style armour but holding guns. The young man slowly descends the stairs in no rush and all the men open fire on him. The bullets that miss hit the stairs but the bullets that hit seem to be hitting some sort of barrier or forcefield in front of the man. As more bullets hit this forcefield you notice its actually the outlines of swords that the bullets seem to be striking.

The man stops and you see that about 12-15 swords are circling around him in a franic motion that he's controlling. The scene ends with a closeup of the man as his eyes begin to glow even redder.

The last trailer is for a mobile game with more cutsy artwork. In the end it shows the logos for all three games converge into the base of yet another amono style art piece for the entire compliation.

From what Jagged just posted, it almost seems like the whole FFXIII universe is going to be like some sort of Empire-controlled universe, and these people are a bunch of rebels.

Almost like that.

And people with red eyes are evil. Usually.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
