That design definitely is better IMO. The Genesis controls are obvious, but then, the Y button could be used as the N64's B button, the B button as the N64's A button, and the other 4 buttons as the C buttons. Pretty slick.

you could probably call the blank buttons 1 and 2 or something unoriginal and boring

Nothing can be worse than the "black" and "white" buttons on the Xbox controller though. I've always hated those things with a passion.

My favorite part was that they were completely neutral to having a titled assignment. They were just colors.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Acer's controller is pretty cool. I'm sure that it would pass as a rumour on a "alternative controller for Wii" later on.

Holy shit, major props to ZeroSlash for noticing Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 2 on the upcoming DS game list! It's on the site Pom posted, but you have to click the upcoming games list in the upper right corner of the DS section.

I hope at the least that there will be adapters for the snes, n64, genesis controllers to plug into the cube slots. I'm sure there will be on the net, but I don't like buying stuff off the internet because it requires me to convince my parents...

Hell yeah, Acer!
Why not just make perfection from the start? They should definitely just make it happen, no question about it.

Thanks guys. =)

I got bored and decided to e-mail Matt at IGN to see if he might have anything to say about it during his next mailbag. It's a bit of a doozy.

Quote:
I'm sure you get shops all the time but I can't help but feel that Nintendo missed the point of having to remap buttons for GameCube's version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask because of the lack of enough face buttons on the GameCube's controller to properly imitate the N64 controller's C buttons when I saw their Virtual Console controller today. If you recall those two games were remapped so that the Z button acted as C button down, Y as C button left, X as C button right, the C stick up as C button up with no actual face button, and an optional use of the C stick as the other C button directions as well.

This worked for those two games but now we're talking about making a controller that can or should support all of the N64 titles. And you know what; a second analog control stick does not cut it. There were titles that believe it or not used those N64 C buttons as buttons and not digital camera controls. For example, Zelda used those digital buttons for using three alternate weapons/items and Starfox 64 used them for boost, brake, making ROB shut up, and in addition to that were used in conjunction with the analog control stick pointing down to perform a loop or a u-turn. In both games C up was the only C button used to change the camera. So now I see this new controller for Virtual Console. It is impossible for Nintendo to get N64 games to work without remapping two of the C buttons to what I assume are two tiny Z buttons by the L and R shoulder buttons or by mapping them lazily to the second analog control stick. I don't really like either situation because if I want to play N64 games again I think the controls should also reflect their original setup. Jamming on a Zora fishbone guitar in Majora’s Mask was a much weaker experience on GameCube due to the C stick and remapped weapons compared to when I did it originally on the N64 where I could easily press multiple C buttons at the same time and very rapidly at that.

Plus there is that grey area that exists in using an analog stick for the C buttons. Suppose I do diagonally down and left. Does it register as C button left or C button down? This is crucial for a game like Starfox 64 because between those two I'm going to either get a boost or I'm going to get a brake. The original C buttons would never have this issue because being digital that grey area is nonexistent. I'm also sure there were fighting games on N64 that used a six button arcade setup. There's no way that is going to fly using the second analog stick for C buttons.

This controller is perfect for NES and SNES games. I don't want that changed but in order to recreate N64 control correctly I think adding two more face buttons for a Sega Genesis face button layout would make playing N64 games on the Virtual Console controller how they were meant to be played. Oh that's right! I mentioned something about a shop in my first sentence so here's my quickly put together photoshop of this setup.

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/4...rwithsixfa.jpg

I left the two buttons' faces blank because I'm not sure what they should be called. Perhaps 'w' and 'i' buttons would work. I believe the SNES button layout should be left alone since it is my belief that out of the three Nintendo consoles available on the Virtual Console the SNES will be the most popular which I also believe explains Nintendo's choice of putting the directional pad in the primary location instead of giving it the backseat location in favor of the analog control stick like they did for GameCube's controller. I'm pretty sure the location of the left analog control stick was also to make it easier for lazy multiplatform ports. It is my hope that third parties use it for that as little as possible.

Anyway, I think this setup allows the controller to cover all of Virtual Console more accurately to each supported console’s original controller setup. What do you think, Matt? I know this is a bit of an early reaction since Nintendo hasn’t gone over all the details of this controller as of the current date, May 10th, and heck they might actually have revealed that it somehow does play N64 games the way I described wonderfully by the time you read and/or by lucky chance respond to this very long e-mail. Thanks for your time and keep up the great work.

Speaking of Matt IGN, he just revealed that Duck Hunt Wii is going to be revealed and playable tomorrow. Super Mario Galaxy will also be playable!

Capcom has also officially announced Resident Evil for Wii, but no details yet, hopefully it shows up in the next few days.

MMM, Path of Radiance sequel (Fire Emblem) for the Wii starring Sothe. Somehow I had a feeling he would wind up being important. Pretty much clenches my purchase of the system.

Look at the character in the plane. It looks like the same character used for all those simple sports games. I'm sure this is one of those small simple games as well. Looks nice but I doubt it's a full fledged Pilot Wings game.

I'm loving all these vids from the Wii, I can't wait to get my hands on one. Something that struck me like a bolt of lightning though wasn't something from Reggie or Miyamoto but something my dad said. I just showed him one of those promo videos that I thought was great and said something like, 'maybe you could get into games too' and started telling him abouts all the cool innovations that the Wii has. He said to me 'yeh ok, is there a formula one game?'. I checked it out and it doesn't have one announced yet but ofcourse the PS3 does. That got me to thinking that although gamers like me who have grown up with every nintendo system think these innovations are great for games they still might not appeal to those new gamers that nintendo wants to pull in. I guess it's like how although ipods and other mp3 players are pretty cool, some people might just like sitting back and listening to a vinyl (not quite the same but it will do)

One last thing. Did anyone in Sydney see Ten news at 5 today because they showed the 'must have' Christmas toy this year, the PS3. It had some guy on there saying that play with joysticks was old school, and motion sensing was all new and awesome. I think that Nintendo will need some pretty leet marketting to combat with this free press that Sony's getting.

Also, anyone interested, there's a 400x300 video of the whole Nintendo conference for download at
http://www.vgpro.com/file/15549_e320..._800k.wmv.html

There's direct downloads, but I used the torrent with 114 seeds, so dunno how the speeds are for those. The torrent came fast.
Although I have no idea why the page says it's 385.4 MB (404121190 bytes) when the file in the torrent is 260MB.

Better start saving then. The Australian IT section has the PS3 priced at $892 and $999. HDTV penetration is alreay low, and I can't anticipate that people will suddenly want a cheap Blu Ray player given the lack of movies and questions about what will be the defining new standard. If the Wii comes in priced at less than the core 360, I think we'll see a resurgence for Nintendo.

I was speaking idiomatically.
