I heard a rumor that it's impossible to get a megapolis city in the original Sim City on the SNES, because the land was too small.
IS THIS TRUE? It will shatter everything I know if it is. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
|
This rumor is made of lies and fail. I used to be obsessed with that game when I was in my youth. It is freaking insanely hard to get a Megalopolis in that game, but not impossible. However, I played that game to death and was only able to reach 500,000 population ONCE. I don't remember what map I did it on, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the Freeland map (the one with no water).
Good luck trying to get one though, its probably one of the hardest things to do in that game (other then those freaking scenarios). Also, I'm totally going to play this at work now. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I remember doing this once back in my SimCity playing days.
One of things was to never use roads. Low pollution attracts more sims to your city, ironically you don't suffer from traffic problems either while using a railroad system (Even though there is only one train for the entire city.) I guess another thing to remember is to make 3 x 3 donut or U patterns*, I'm not sure why it works it just does =p. Ha, now I want to know if I can still make a megalopolis ![]() * ![]() I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I remember hearing a friend a long time ago tell me that his mom was obsessed with Sim City, and managed to hit the 1 million population mark largely by making a sort of X pattern that alternated zones of business with industry (or something like that, I was never good at this game, but it was fun building cities).
They have music for that achievement (you remember how the music changes everytime you advance into a bigger city?), so I'm sure it's possible, although probably hard to get to. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Legitimately? I have no idea. I pulled it off with a Game Genie and infinite money, so in theory it's possible.

Another question: how to get the Mario statue in the game? I freaking never found out that. (Never could I make the Sonic statue in SC2000 on the Saturn either for the matter)

You have to reach Megapolis status to receive the Mario Statue. Certainly worth it for such a cool item in your city.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I also got a Megalopolis. If I am remembering correctly, the best way to do it was to use 3x3 donuts and rings, the outside ring being industrial, the inside being commercial, and all the middle being residential. The middle of the donuts was the best place to put your police stations and rewards like parks. Corners for power plants and airports. And you had to use the land mass with no water. Seaports are crap anyway. No roads, only rail. Zero taxes (you almost definitely need the money cheat).
Jam it back in, in the dark.

Nehmi: OMG MASTER. I rented it a lot and played it, but I kept running out of money. I never knew how to make the city make money for me. Were you able to reach megapolis without cheating?
A huge-as-fuck pain in the ass? Well, yes, but that's not irony either. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I guess I'm forgetting my SimCity SNES a bit...

![]() Oh yeah one last thing you should keep in mind when going for a megalopolis (without cheating.) Is to "stack" your zones. Especially your commercial zones. Stacking involves bulldozing individual houses on a residential zone then placing a commercial zone inbetween the empty spaces (the residential zones should be one space apart to do this.) Then once the commercial zone is developed bulldoze the R zone completely leaving a mini-commercial zone. Maybe a diagram will explain this better:

40 Years? AHAHAHA. There is no possible way to make a Megapolis in 40 years without majorly cheating.
Lurker... as I recall I didn't cheat when I made it, but it was a long time ago so I don't remember. Once you start filling up the map, its not that hard to start raking in money. I probably left my snes on all day and had it build up large amounts of money. Once you have quite a bit $100,000+ You shouldn't have to worry about money for a long time and even a 1% tax will make you money. Also, after the map is completely full, I went around and bulldozed all the schools & hospitals for more residential area. Its really hard, and like I said... I only got it once. Although, leaving your SNES on all day isn't very good for it, nor is it very good for your city. I remember sometimes I would come back after school and my city would be in shambles from a disaster. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I had a megalopolis before I got the 50 years anniversary statue and dude I don't know any fucking Action Replay shit. It's really a question of choosing the right map and the right building and infrastructure buildung. You have to build railways from the very beginning, for instance.
FELIPE NO |
Still how did you get around the problem of money? Sure you probably have quite a bit after you get to a metropolis, but the initial setup still takes quite a few years. Money is always a problem at the beginning and you won't have a lot of it if you lower the taxes to induce growth.
If you really got a megapolis before 50 years you are certainly a god of this game. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |

[QUOTE=Kairyu]Heh, I should say it is hard to get around a metropolis if all the roads were replaced by old fashioned railways; speaking in a real life situation of course
![]() Oh yeah one last thing you should keep in mind when going for a megalopolis (without cheating.) Is to "stack" your zones. Especially your commercial zones. Can you stack with I and C too? My husband has been playing Sim City for days and I don't think I'm going to get back to Zelda until he figures out how to get a Megalopolis! There's nowhere I can't reach.

Hmm I never tried it with industrial zones. It probably would work but it would be hard to do knowing that residential zones don't grow well in polluted areas. But I do know it also works with stadiums and commercial zones.

I never got a megapolis. I BUSTED MY FUCKING ASS LIKE NO TOMORROW TRYING TO ACHEIVE IT AND I NEVER GOT IT. The maximum population I ever got in sim city was an estimated 430,000. I will never forget that day either cuz I thought surely I was going to get it. I only realized that it wasn't going to happen when my population started declining after it reached that mark.
I was able to beat all of the scenarios. ALL OF THEM! BUT I COULD NOT GET THAT STINKING MEGAPoLIS. THis is an emotional topic for me cuz I spent three fucking years playing that damn game like crazy, only never to hit 500,000 people. Even when I got other games, I would always play this damn game. I was bloody friggin obessesed!!! It's very bad because it is one of the few games in my life where I never completed everything fully :aargh: I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

The sad part is getting 500,000 is pretty easy once you know how to do it. So I feel bad for those pulling out their hair over it. The biggest one I built using the console on Freeland was 960,220. The biggest I built using an emulator and endless gifts on Freeland was 1,000,160. I could've gone higher if I stacked my TOPS.

I have gotten really closemany times but after a while, I ran out of land. Why did they have to make the maps so small?
I found my best cities were the island maps. I packed it tight full of as much commercial, industry and residential, then got free land thingys, and used those. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |

I forgot to mention that it is possible to stack I zones, however to do that you have to build an industrial zone away from the area you're planning on creating a stacked industry. The only residentials will be the ones that you will put down in the place of your future industrial area, you must bulldoze any housing that appears and replace it with parkland. In doing so you keep the demand for R zones high. As you move up and down the side of the screen with new R zones you then have to move your I zones further away. After you're done filling the area with R zones then you can bulldoze one at a time and add an I zone. When I start a city this is what I do, I also double stack so instead of 4 zones taking up a 5x6 area they take up a 5x5 area. It's very time consuming but well worth it if you have the patience. It takes me well over 100 years just to get my Industrial area prepped before I can begin building a city.

I'm going to be building another one, I'm aiming for 1,500,000. So it's going to be interesting to see if I come near it.
