Who else mailed taxes today?
I had done my federal and California state taxes, like, two months ago (actually got both of the refunds already), but last night I realized I had never filed my Pennsylvania state and local taxes. Panic ensued as I rushed to fill them out so I could get the early collection time at my workplace, though I did bump into three people I knew also using photocopiers to make copies for themselves.
My federal refund was pretty good, around $1200. I also got around $300 back from California. Unfortunately I owed about $500 to Pennsylvania, since apparently they changed their tax rate and CA's is no longer higher. ![]() Jam it back in, in the dark. |
When you say "Pennsylvania state and local," what exactly do you mean?? Local taxes? Really? Ahaha, man, I hope I'm not missing something on our taxes... I've never paid "local" taxes. Real estate tax, excise tax, shit like that, yea. Also, I thought you had moved to Cali way before Jan 1, 2009, no?
I filed mine back on the 31st of January. We claimed the federal tax credit for first time home buyers. I should have a BIG chunk of change coming from that. Chris got his fed return more than a month ago, now. I, however, got a lovely letter from the IRS asking me about my Schedule L (real estate taxes claimed in addition to my fed standard deductions). I'm still waiting for my federal refund. I replied to the IRS 3.5 weeks ago. I called them. They're all like "Yeeeea, it takes 4 weeks for us just to LOOK at your response." ![]() There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Pennsylvania has a flat state tax around 3%, then local areas can impose up to a 1% income tax (though it's only on wages and not stuff like pension payouts, interest, and money made that wasn't compensation for a job).
While I moved to CA a few years ago, I'm a student, and as such don't actually have to change residency. I had planned to move back out east after graduating, so I kept my residency there. In previous years I didn't have to pay any PA taxes since I was taxed higher in in CA, but I guess some stuff changed in one state or the other since I wound up having to shell out a bit of money this year. ![]() Right now here in CA I have to pay 4% on anything made over $16,500 (total tax below that was something like $400). I think there's another bracket around $40k where it's 6%! Most amazing jew boots |
I filed mine back in February. Got about 2400 back (not bad for working only part time) but I owed about 2,200 dollars in property taxes. So I usually break even.

Filed mine last week, got the refund yesterday. Since I had not been able to work at all last year my refund was pretty low (A little under $500), so... yeah =\

That's not too bad, I think my refund is 200ish. lol I have been out of a paying job for too long. -w-
How ya doing, buddy? ![]() Thanks Seris! ![]() |
Do you guys essentially do maximum withholding or something? I owed $6 to the IRS and got ~$200 back from MA basically on rent deductions and I don't remember ever getting anything more than a few hundred dollars, if I got anything. I don't think I have particularly complicated returns. Am I missing some trough of deductions?
FELIPE NO |
I work freelance so I never have any money taken out of my paycheck. After an exhausting list of write-offs, I owed a little north of $3500 which I paid off between January and this past Thursday.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() |
Aren't you supposed to make quarterly estimated payments if you're not having income withheld? I thought they charged you penalties if you underpaid throughout the year.
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
There are no penalties that I'm aware of, other than taking a huge chunk out of your checking account in one fell swoop rather than over the course of the year. Maybe it's a Massachusetts thing?

I don't know man. You said you were a free-lancer. That sounds like independent contractor/self-employed to me.
Who Is Considered Self-Employed? You might then owe self-employment tax. Self Employment Tax Regarding estimated taxes: Estimated Taxes Might be something to look into. Different article I found online mentioned they charge you 4% interest on underpaid taxes. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
My uncle is my accountant and he handles all of this stuff for me. He just asks "what are you writing off" and when he's done working his magic he says "here's what you owe." I'm sure all of this stuff has been factored in, but like I said, I'm fairly sure there's no penalty for doing everything in one lump sum in April.
