Might want to change that "voting rules" paragraph back, then.
Also oh crap, why did I think I had an extra week before I came up in the queue? The 6 song week should've tipped me off in some way. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |
Nomination #27
Composer: Mark Mothersbaugh Album: The Sims 2: Nightlife Track Title: The Sims Theme (Junkie XL remix) Track Number: 01 Year: 2005 Catalog Number: N/A Additional Information: Almost seems unfair nominating a Sims track that's also Junkie XL related! The theme of this comment? FTP of course. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
a bug's life (PSX Game Rip) - Atta Flight (Riverbed Flight) Doesn't sound anything like Randy Newman; the tribal beat would seem more at home in some jungle adventure. The track really livens up when the panpipes and piano kick in, but it takes way too long for that to happen and there's a lot of repetition even then. GoldenEye 007 (Game Rip) - Antenna Cradle, Janus Base, Cuba The second movie-licensed song in a row actually sounds a lot like the stuff Eric Serra wrote for the film. There's a nice rendition of the James Bond theme and a nice beat. The effect is good overall, but I'm not sure relying on the movie theme for its best part is in keeping with the spirit of the contest. In The Lounge with No One Lives Forever - Elevator of Love Another Bond-style song, this one clearly inspired by John Barry's loungy music from the 60's Bonds. It's okay as such, but lounge is a style that doesn't really resonate much with me. Mega Man Star Force 3 (Game Rip) - Grave Joker Stage I've ranted long and hard on how latter-day Blue Bomber music really pales in comparison to the original NES tunes. This isn't as bad as some of the stuff found in the dregs of the X series and has some nice moments but overall continues the trend toward blandness. Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter of Dream - Final Movement ~ Florid Funeral (featured in MADARA 2) Sounds like somebody watched Titanic before they sat down to compose this one. The new-agey Gaelic atmosphere it provides has been done to death but at least the execution here is pleasant and listenable. Mirror's Edge Original Videogame Score - Still Alive The "other" Still Alive is deadly serious where its Portal counterpart was snarky and fun with a sound that reminds me vaguely of Bjork. The lyrics make no sense, but they're well-presented and the light rock instruments have some nice touches. Scratches Original Soundtrack - The House, in Dust As morose and depressing as its title suggests. I liked moments of it, but the overall atmosphere was so bleak it was hard to keep listening after a bit. Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan Interestingly, the song with the Gaelic name isn't the one with the pipes within. Instead we get bouncy, upbeat synthiness with some nice flourishes. Interesting week. I can't say that I was bowled over by anything, but they all had something that made me think at the very least. The Point Spread Tar Slan – 3 pts. Florid Funeral – 2 pts. Still Alive – 1 pt. I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
Game Title: Shinobi X (Game Rip)
Artist: Richard Jacques Track Title: Sakyou (Stage 2 Midboss) Year: 1995 Source: kingshriek's SSF/DSF page What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I love the soundtrack to the Bug's Life PSX game, and while a bug's life (PSX Game Rip) - Atta Flight (Riverbed Flight) isn't a favourite of mine, it nicely represents the tone and sound of the game's music. I do enjoy the build, and I do enjoy the equatorial instrumentation and tempo; but it's lacking a little something at the core (particularly melody and memorability). Still a nice listen though.
I just couldn't get into GoldenEye 007 (Game Rip) - Antenna Cradle, Janus Base, Cuba ![]() In The Lounge with No One Lives Forever - Elevator of Love has a distinctive style going for it and knows just what to do with it. Great detective/bar music, and while not being the strongest melodically, it's alluring enough to save and keep for future "Hmm some detective or bar music wouldn't go astray right now" moments. 'Cause everyone has at least two during their life. OK, I really like the MegaMan Battle Network series (Start Force too, but not as much). Kind of lame on my part, I know. I'm never really impressed with the music from said games however, with only one in every ten or so tunes actually striking me as listenable outside of in-game context. Mega Man Star Force 3 (Game Rip) - Grave Joker Stage is slick and palatable and has some nice ideas going on, though it's not the sort of track I can see myself listening to voluntarily. One criticism I guess is that it's not chill enough to be background music; and it's not engaging enough to be actively listened to? I dunno. ![]() Wait, Yuji Yoshino of Suikoden Celtic Collection and Orrizonte fame is the arranger here? I'm not surprised. Of course that means I like Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter of Dream - Final Movement ~ Florid Funeral (featured in MADARA 2). It's as warm as it is isolated, and shows just how sound a grasp Yoshino has on Celtic style arrangements. Wonderfully wistful and piercingly pensive from start to finish. Mirror's Edge Original Videogame Score - Still Alive is nice and inoffensive at times, awkwardly sappy at others. Unfortunately I think the latter element is predominant, particularly in the chorus which I really grew to dislike by the end of the song. Nah, sorry nom, can't get behind this one! I've heard fragments of the Scratches score before, and have been thoroughly impressed by each and every one. Scratches Original Soundtrack - The House, in Dust sustains this impression with a beautifully restrained, elegiac tone. The violin is simultaneously stirring and sorrowful, and the piano touches are all class. This is one of the more touching tracks I've heard in SotW, and as such I will definitely be hunting down the soundtrack. Such a contrast from the previous musical offering! Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan has just clicked with me ever since I first heard it. The intro of peppy---intimidating riffage is nicely transformed into a well handled brass passage before the jazzy piano kicks in. It's bouncy without being too heavy on the senses, and has a number of fantastic melodies. Almost borders on loop-excess, but I think 3 doses of piano jazz is just right! one POINT martini thanks dollface...actually, make it six 2 points: Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan 2 points: Scratches Original Soundtrack - The House, in Dust 2 points: Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter of Dream - Final Movement ~ Florid Funeral (featured in MADARA 2) 4th: In The Lounge with No One Lives Forever - Elevator of Love 5th: a bug's life (PSX Game Rip) - Atta Flight (Riverbed Flight) 6th: Mega Man Star Force 3 (Game Rip) - Grave Joker Stage 7th: GoldenEye 007 (Game Rip) - Antenna Cradle, Janus Base, Cuba 8th: Mirror's Edge Original Videogame Score - Still Alive Pretty good week, with a couple of really nice discoveries. I couldn't even partake in a nom-bias spread because the top tier was so tight. FELIPE NO |

a bug's life (PSX Game Rip) - Atta Flight (Riverbed Flight)
One of my favorite composer duo, yet this isn't among my favorite of their songs. Still a well-done piece in terms of production and in creating a tense ethnic mood, however I don't particularly enjoy it outside of the game or without the rest of the soundtrack. GoldenEye 007 (Game Rip) - Antenna Cradle, Janus Base, Cuba It's OK, but I don't feel anything special about it. Not owning a N64 back then writes off nostalgia, and the samples quality is a tad poor (I liked the bass drum though). Also, I'm usually not a huge fan of tense moods. In The Lounge with No One Lives Forever - Elevator of Love Love this soundtrack, it elevates my spirit. High quality jazzy material all around, it's quite a treat! "Elevator of Love" is not the track I'd have chosen for the contest here though (I prefer "Santa's Workshop"), but any track from the album is still nice. Not the most engaging composition, but it works wonder for relaxing, in large part thanks to the vocals. Mega Man Star Force 3 (Game Rip) - Grave Joker Stage Good song, I didn't know the Breath of Fire III duo composed the soundtrack to that Mega Man game. While not extravagant, it sports a welcome classic VGM structure and makes for a easy and fun listen. Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter of Dream - Final Movement ~ Florid Funeral (featured in MADARA 2) Rich celtic sound and serene composition make this song enjoyable. I found it a bit boring after a while though, yet I can't deny its beauty. Mirror's Edge Original Videogame Score - Still Alive "Still Alive" is an enjoyable song, which is not always the case with lyrics-based VGM from my experience. It's somewhat run-off-the-mill however, the instrumental chorus actually made me think of Coldplay. Scratches Original Soundtrack - The House, in Dust Melancholy inducing song verging on horror, which is good material for Halloween. I found it to be well constructed and performed, yet the anemic composition almost put me to sleep. Not good for all occasions, but fine on grey days or in abandoned houses, for example. Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan This one is quite engaging! The piano took me by surprise and then I was truly hooked. Upbeat, fun, and definitely getting points! (2 points) In The Lounge with No One Lives Forever - Elevator of Love (2 points) Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan (1 point) Mega Man Star Force 3 (Game Rip) - Grave Joker Stage (1 point) Mirror's Edge Original Videogame Score - Still Alive ----- I've already nominated a song, but I'd like to replace it with this Halloween-inspired nom seeing as it should go up during the week of the 31st. Thanks! 3 points: Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan
2 points: GoldenEye 007 (Game Rip) - Antenna Cradle, Janus Base, Cuba 1 point: In The Lounge with No One Lives Forever - Elevator of Love Oh yeah! It might be relevant to you dudeskis' interests that I'm going to be on vacation for a week starting tomorrow morning, so again I leave you in the probably capable hands of Kaleb. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
![]() Here are my votes: 3 points - Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan I really like the style of this track. My favorite this week and one I'll continue to listen to in the future. 2 points - Mirror's Edge Original Videogame Score - Still Alive I don't think this one is incredibly obscure, but I still think it's a great track, and I'm in support of anything that can knock that other "Still Alive" off its high horse. 1 point - Mega Man Star Force 3 (Game Rip) - Grave Joker Stage It's good but nothing really broke out of the mold for me. Still, I prefer it over any of the remaining tracks. Additional Spam: And here's my nomination: === Kaleb.G === * Album: Perfect Selection Dracula ~New Classic~ * Artist: Nazo² Project * Composer: Konami Kukeiha Club * Disc #: 1 (of 1) * Track #: 8 * Track Title: Theme from "The Legend of Dracula" * Catalogue Number: KICA-1103 * Year: 1992 * Additional Info: This is a beautiful track. * Source: INTANETS Since I'm prepping the tracks this week, I don't need to upload it to the nom folder. Work ended on a terrible clashing note today so it's a really great that this week's SotW is a particularly nice one. There's something to like in every track (nomination bias aside). This means voting is going to be pretty tough...
(2 points) Mirror's Edge Original Videogame Score - Still Alive I like how the song weaves in the Mirror's Edge main theme and overlays it with agreeable pop sensibilities like its catchy vocal melody. (1 point) Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan Many things to like in this upbeat number, from instrumentation to arrangement to melody. The slightly jazzy inflections are neat (forgive me if the genre is wrong). (1 point) In The Lounge with No One Lives Forever - Elevator of Love Loungey, easy-going music on a late night. What's not to like? (1 point) Mega Man Star Force 3 (Game Rip) - Grave Joker Stage Nice melody that flows well. (1 point) a bug's life (PSX Game Rip) - Atta Flight (Riverbed Flight) Well, I actually like this track quite a bit. Some nice layering there. And here's a new nomination: * Album Title: FantaVision Original Soundtrack * Artist: Soichi Terada * Track Title: INFINITY (PRIMARY) * Source: http://vgmdb.net/album/157 * File Location: Nominations folder * Disc Number: 1 (of 1) * Track Number: 12 * Catalogue Number: SVWC-7060 * Year: 2000 What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

2 Points: a bug's life (PSX Game Rip) - Atta Flight (Riverbed Flight)
2 Points: Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan 1 Point: Mirror's Edge Original Videogame Score - Still Alive 1 Point: Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter of Dream - Final Movement ~ Florid Funeral (featured in MADARA 2) A rather good week, from my point of view that is. Would have nominated something without vocals from Mirror's Edge though, maybe i will do so some time, the game has been on my personal nomination queue for quite a while. How ya doing, buddy? |
(3 points) Mirror's Edge Original Videogame Score - Still Alive: This is the type of song I thoroughly enjoyed but would be a guilty pleasure were I to hear it on the radio. Inoffensive sure, but it follows a predictable formula successfully.
(1 point) GoldenEye 007 (Game Rip) - Antenna Cradle, Janus Base, Cuba: It never gets as uber-intense as it should, but I do enjoy the beginning ramp up, and I like how it incorporates the game's (and movie's) themes in a frantic finale. (1 point) a bug's life (PSX Game Rip) - Atta Flight (Riverbed Flight): Agreed that I like the piano midway through, but wish it got to it sooner. (1 point) Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan: Not much to say about it, but it has some nice parts. As for the rest: Grave Joker Stage is clearly MM-lite, but mildly enjoyable synth nonetheless. Final Movement has celtic going for it, which is nice, but ultimately its too staid and not achingly beautiful enough. I can clearly see the homages in Elevator of Love, but it's simply not my bag, baby. As for The House, In Dust -- too morose, too dreary, nothing to love. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Quick spam nomination:
Album/Game Title: Timesplitters: Future Perfect (Game Rip) Artist: Graeme Norgate Track Title: Spaceport Year: 2005 (<- game release) Source: N/A: TimeSplitters Future Perfect Original Soundtrack - VGMdb I apologize for the long track in advance... (Oh yeah, if anyone happens to have the official free digital release of the soundtrack in decent quality (>= 222 Kbps), replacing my upload and nomination info might be a good idea, since there is an OST) Most amazing jew boots |
3 Points: Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter of Dream - Final Movement ~ Florid Funeral (featured in MADARA 2)
2 Points: Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan 1 Point: Mega Man Star Force 3 (Game Rip) - Grave Joker Stage This week was pretty divided for me; the good songs were very good and the rest didn't do much for me at all. I wanted to like Mirror's Edge - I listened to it three times - but ultimately felt that the vocals weren't working for me and that it would've served much better as an acoustic track. The vocals just made it too sappy. The Bug's Life track would've been vastly improved by the presence of an overlaying melody instead of just the jungle ambience it had. Everything else was okay but didn't do a whole lot to impress me like the three that got points. Nomination: Album: Twinkle Star Sprites Composer: Tsuyoshi Muramatsu, Takao Ohshima, Keiichiro Segawa Track Title: LONGING ~ RE-BIRTH (Ending & Staff Roll) Track Number: 46 Year: 1997 Catalog Number: PCCB-00247 Source: VGMdb.net There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Interesting week, the 1-Pointers were a hard decision.
1 Point - a bug's life (PSX Game Rip) - Atta Flight (Riverbed Flight) 1 Point - GoldenEye 007 (Game Rip) - Antenna Cradle, Janus Base, Cuba 2 Points - Mega Man Star Force 3 (Game Rip) - Grave Joker Stage 2 Points - Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - Tar slan This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
2 points: Atta Flight (Riverbed Flight)
2 points: Still Alive 1 point: Antenna Cradle, Janus Base, Cuba 1 point: Grave Joker Stage Just Missed: Tar slan I don't think I've been this conflicted over a week before. Also, while I'm generally lax about nom obscurity, I find it hard to believe that there are people who have not heard the Cradle music before; it's probably the most recognizable tune from the game. Tar slan would've been a heavy contender if I wasn't already turned off by that terrible brass melody at the beginning. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
