EVGA 9800 GTX+ being a bitch >:(

I just recently got this card, and I've been having some trouble with it.

Originally put in latest 180.xx driver, worked fine for awhile, but I've been having trouble with game crashes. The games kept crashing when in fullscreen, also kept fiddling with graphics settings, even on low it does this.

It crashes the game, while making my resolution go to 640x480, and turns it to like...... 8bit colour or something strange like that.

Switching to windowed mode prevents my games from crashing though, if the game has that option.

Tried older 178.xx drivers, that didn't help either.

Tried new 181.xx driver that was released 2days ago, that crashed my PC when it was at desktop, blotting my screen with tons of thick yellow lines.

I'm a pretty big PC newb, so I might have done something wrong here.... I checked my PSU, and it met bare minimum. One cable came along with my graphics card, it was 6-pin power cable. I originally hooked it up, then my game started to wonk out. So I looked again, and I saw a PCI-E cable coming directly from my PSU that was unused, so I figured that'd be the problem, that it wasn't getting direct power or something. Unfortunately, the PCI-E cable wouldn't fit in well, since one of the pins was square and wouldn't fit well. I jammed it in anyways though, the 6pins didn't go all the way in, but mostly. It ran fine afterwards, so I didn't see a huge issue.

In short, my games always crash when played in full screen, regardless of display settings.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Try getting a PSU that exceeds bare minimum specifications.

What's the temperature of your setup?

Have you tested your RAM? Use memtest86 or something.

(Oh, and it seems you're not the only one with the problem. NVIDIA Forums > Problems with 790i + 9800 GTX)

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Oh, I tried memtest ahead of time to make sure. I always thought it was some issue with that. The temp of my videocard is pretty stable at 40C me thinks.

Thanks for the link, I actually stumbled upon that myself earlier when trying to find a solution haha.

There seemed to be some sort of DirectX problem. It needed a complete cleaning process to fix. Tried to do it manually, but I screwed something up, so I ended up formating my PC.

Along with reinstalling windows I got a fresh DirectX install, and now things seem to be running smoothly .

Kinda wish I didn't have to format though, screwed up a lot of my program files

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
