Zeus' Wrath Divine: I nominated this one because I just love the epic feel of it. The choir is a highlight here and the intense percussion just adds to the whole mix. It was one of the highlights of the soundtrack for me.

Talk to the Wind: I like the mysterious nature of this one. It's got a catchy melody and some nice bass line accompaniment. I have a soft spot for this type of synth.

1st Floor, Mushroom Mayhem: This is an interesting nomination. It's got that jazzy feel to it, but at times, I think it's a bit "noisy." It definitely fits the title though. Not bad, but not a favorite.

Sunken Ship: Well, Muzza, I must say, you have an ear for those catchy pieces! This one has a pretty nice beat and a great melody. I was surprised after hearing the title of the game. This is definitely a keeper!

Two of Braves: This one isn't too bad. It's got a pretty decent melody and some nice developments, but again, while catchy, it's not a favorite this week.

The Ryousanhaken Suite: Now this one is pretty damn catchy! I love the fusion of styles and the developments throughout. This one is definitely getting some points!

Shinju Heading to the Forest: While I do like the Mushihimesama soundtrack, and I do appreciate this style of music, it's up against some tough competition. I'll definitely keep it, because it's a great arrangement, but in the sea of other nominations, this one barely missed the cut.

Stage 2 - Cherlindrea's Forest II: Well, this is has a pretty nice melody too! It's also quite catchy. There are parts of it that I didn't really like, especially in the B section, but overall, it was a solid offering.

2 points: God of War Original Soundtrack - Zeus' Wrath Divine
2 points: McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (Game Rip) - Sunken
2 points: Suikoden: The Divine Oath - The Ryousanhaku Suite

I'm working on another nomination.

God of War Original Soundtrack - Zeus' Wrath Divine Very filmic. The percussion work is very nice, and the choir lends the track a nice depth. The actual melody and rhythm parts aren't super-strong, though.

Jewel Master (Game Rip) - Talk to the Wind Pretty bland. There's not a whole lot going on, and the whole production feels really limp.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis (Game Rip) - 1st Floor, Mushroom Mayhem I remember listening to Tappy's MvDK1 rip a dog's age ago; good bouncyfun was had by all. This isn't quite in the same league...the bounce is there, but it's not developed as much as it could be, and there's an awful lot of repetition.

McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (Game Rip) - Sunken Ship More bouncyfun Superior to the MvDK2 in terms of variety, but still missing that little hook that turns it from good to great.

Rockman EXE 5DS & 6 Complete Music Encyclopedia - Two of Braves A very busy and layered sound, this. Pretty good by the standards of latter-day Mega Man music, with a great melody and rhythm even if the limitations of the synth make things a tad mushy.

Suikoden: The Divine Oath - The Ryousanhaku Suite I don't normally go in for funk, but this has some smooth moves and class. Sweet Suikoden's Badassssss Song.

THE SECRET LOVER: Mushihimesama REMIX TRACKS - Shinju Heading to the Forest -arrange version- Smooth jazz-sytle piano-led synth groove. It's got some nice chops, in a very different way from the previous funkalicious entrant.

Willow (Arcade Game Rip) - Stage 2 - Cherlindrea's Forest II I heard this one in a YouTube video and managed to track down a copy. It doesn't have a whit in common with James Horner's Willow score, or the beloved NES version's chirps, but it's insanely catchy all the same.

The Point Spread
Cherlindea's Forest II - 3 pts.
Two of Braves - 2 pts.
Zeus' Wrath Divine - 1 pt.
Just missed: the Funk Twins

I was speaking idiomatically.

Nomination time!

Album: Putty Squad (SNES Rip)
Artist: Richard Joseph
Track Title: Dr. Sushi's Laboratory of Terror
Track Number: 4
Year: 1994
Source: Game profile: Putty Squad ~ SNESmusic.org
Additional Info: This game was originally supposed to be an Amiga game, but was canceled at the last minute - after copies had already been sent to reviewers to score. It was then released on the SNES later. I would be so excited if the Amiga version of this game ever surfaced anywhere, along with the music for that system. But for now, the SNES music will do.

Now this is more like my kind of week.

2 points: McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (Game Rip) - Sunken Ship
1 point: Jewel Master (Game Rip) - Talk to the Wind
1 point: Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis (Game Rip) - 1st Floor, Mushroom Mayhem
1 point: Suikoden: The Divine Oath - The Ryousanhaku Suite
1 point: Willow (Arcade Game Rip) - Stage 2 - Cherlindrea's Forest II

So many great tracks. The Ryousanhaku Suite was pretty engaging despite the length, but it tries to do a lot and kind of throws everything and the kitchen sink at you. I like Jewel Master's soundtrack, even if Talk to the Wind wasn't quite one of my favorites. I remember wanting to nominate the first level's theme "Jewel Master" for the BCC. Even Zeus' Wrath Divine was nice, although completely out of place this week.

Enjoyable week with lots of chiptune-ish contenders, but it seems I've fallen more towards some of the more realistic sounding ones.

(3 points) Suikoden: The Divine Oath - The Ryousanhaku Suite
(2 points) THE SECRET LOVER: Mushihimesama REMIX TRACKS - Shinju Heading to the Forest -arrange version-
(1 point) McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (Game Rip) - Sunken Ship

--------------------

Next nomination:
  • Artist: Sota Fujimori
  • Album Title: Neo Contra (Game Rip)
  • Track Title: Mission 3
  • Track Number: 12
  • Year: 2004
  • Additional Information: Not the most obscure nom that will come from me, but since the game is not as popular as the first or third Contra, plus the fact no official album was released, I think it should be OK for SotW. Hopefully some people haven't heard this tune yet; I didn't until a few months ago and it instantly became a favorite!

It will be uploaded to the SotW server today.

Quickie vote

3 points - THE SECRET LOVER: Mushihimesama REMIX TRACKS - Shinju Heading to the Forest -arrange version-

2 points - God of War Original Soundtrack - Zeus' Wrath Divine

1 point - Willow (Arcade Game Rip) - Stage 2 - Cherlindrea's Forest II

And here's another nom of mine...

Artist: Shinji Hosoe & Ayako Saso
Album Title: SPIKEOUT Battle Street Original Soundtrack
Track Title: Bad guys ~Here Comes The Area Boss~
Track Number: 27
Year: 2005
Source: VGMDb link
Additional information: This is a beat-em-up by Sega made for the Arcade and Xbox. This release slipped under my radar until it got restocked when the Sega Direct Shop came back online and that it was added to the VGM World catalog.

Didn't care for most of the tracks this week.

3 pts. - The Ryousanhaku Suite
2 pts. - Shinju Heading to the Forest -arrange version
1 pt. - Talk to the Wind

Ryousanhaku Suite is by far my longest nom ever, and only the second arrangement I've nominated, but I think it's justified. It's a nice jazz fusion (I guess?) song that kind of reminds me of the stuff _DH_ used to nominate. It's 10 minutes long, but it's progressive enough to remain enjoyable throughout. And in a week like this, there's something to be said for actual instruments.

I've never played Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2, but 1st Floor was really familiar. I'm thinking it's a remix of the stage 1 song from the first game?

There's nowhere I can't reach.
Check out my original music at my Soundcloud page!

Latest music rips (updated January 10, 2012):

SimCity DS - Jazz/ambient/electronic music including interesting reworkings of songs from the fantastic SimCity 3000 soundtrack
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

It's an extended version of the Mini-Mario stage theme. The first 45 seconds are pretty much a sound upgrade of the theme, and then everything else to the end of the loop is additional material.

Yup, I'm kind of lame in the sense that if a song has a good melody, I'm all over it. :P Melody is #1 for me!

As a general rule, I don't really like serious, orchestral tracks such as this. But I must admit, this God of War Original Soundtrack - Zeus' Wrath Divine piece wasn't that bad. The vocal elements and fierce percussions are particularly good, and the rest is pretty engaging. No melody (dun-dun-DUNN), but it's still good (especially when considering the pedigree).

Jewel Master (Game Rip) - Talk to the Wind was a tad uneventful, huh? I appreciate the retro sound and some of the melody lines (like that synth arpeggio), but other than that this one gets irksome pretty quickly. Not awful, but not one that I'll be revisiting.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis (Game Rip) - 1st Floor, Mushroom Mayhem was super-awesome! It's got that intricate GBA-chiptune sort of sound that I go bananas over. <3 That quirky little woodwind line is fantastic and the entire piece progresses really well. I can't see how anything will be topping this!

A very spontaneous nom of mine, McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (Game Rip) - Sunken Ship is --I guess-- my favourite track from the game in which it is used. I was intrigued by "City" in the BCC, and when I got my hands on the entire rip, I was very impressed. This one combines a number of great, bouncy melodies and an intriguingly suspicious tone to create one hell of a chiptune! Perhaps I should have nominated "Magical Forest", that one's pretty awesome as well~

I don't care what anybody says: I love the Rockman EXE games and their soundtracks. Rockman EXE 5DS & 6 Complete Music Encyclopedia - Two of Braves is a solid offering from the 6th game's soundtrack; it's appropriately cyber in sound, and very adventurous in terms of melody and tempo. The melody's a bit weak IMO, but everything else is spot-on!

Whoa this is a blast from that past. I remember, about 5 years ago when I was scouring the net for any and all Genso Suikoden soundtracks, I came across this album. I downloaded it and didn't really enjoy it because IT WAS NOT THE SUIKODEN THAT I WANTED (I know I'm not the only person this happened to!), but this Suikoden: The Divine Oath - The Ryousanhaku Suite track doesn't sound too bad now. It's actually rather swell (first section definitely the best); the length hurts it only a little bit, as the jazz performance is very high-quality. Perhaps I should revisit the whole album. (Also, I love those xylophone touches! +respect)

I really enjoy the Mushihimesama OST, and the original "Shinju..." is one of my favourites. THE SECRET LOVER: Mushihimesama REMIX TRACKS - Shinju Heading to the Forest -arrange version- lacks a bit of substance in some areas, and sounds a bit awkward and vanilla-ey towards the end, but other than that I have no criticisms. Smooth, fluid, engaging; it's a great arrangement, I think I'll be hunting down the rest of the album now!

So I hear this Willow (Arcade Game Rip) - Stage 2 - Cherlindrea's Forest II track has a good melody!!! ...and indeed it does! The melody here is incredibly strong and some of the progressions are pretty groovy in an absurd kind of way. Sadly, I don't think this one will get any points; it's good, but it doesn't really do much in the way of rising above the crowd. Very good track, though!

is there some MELODY in that POINT?!

2 points: Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis (Game Rip) - 1st Floor, Mushroom Mayhem
1 point: McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (Game Rip) - Sunken Ship
1 point: Rockman EXE 5DS & 6 Complete Music Encyclopedia - Two of Braves
1 point: Suikoden: The Divine Oath - The Ryousanhaku Suite
1 point: THE SECRET LOVER: Mushihimesama REMIX TRACKS - Shinju Heading to the Forest -arrange version-
6th: God of War Original Soundtrack - Zeus' Wrath Divine
7th: Willow (Arcade Game Rip) - Stage 2 - Cherlindrea's Forest II
8th: Jewel Master (Game Rip) - Talk to the Wind

Another very strong week! Wish I could've handed out a couple more points.

*sigh* I always get so carried away with my SotW posts! tl;dr aye?

I'm glad the Suikoden: Divine Oath track placed. I said nothing at the time but Drakken songjacked me with that nom. I wasn't too upset because I'd done well with a different track from the album but "Ryousanhaku Suite" was still on my short list. I don't mind sharing now and then. I think I hesitated to nominate it myself due to the length; I was concerned that it would simply be too much song for some people to listen through completely. It's good to see that those fears were unfounded. So good job, Drakken.

I'd hope not. I don't think any composer should be patently banned from SotW.

By the same token, Huelsbeck is one of the composers whose work I grade on a stricter scale now that his work has proven to be of consistent quality. So even though I hope to see more Huelsbeck nominations now and then, the demand for excellence has been raised, I'd say.

Yeah, that's a bit odd. Not that Rockman isn't deserving (the top three's pretty good this week), but just skimming through the threads I thought "Sunken Ship" had by far more votes. And to think I initially was planning on giving it 2 points, but put it down to 1 in order to help Rockman out!

Guess I missed the voting deadline, oh well. The track I enjoyed this week was Mushroom Mayhem, it really deserved better. Well done to Mr. Nominator Guy!

It seems the nominations and results lately have been pretty opposite of what I enjoy in music, which is too bad for me. On that note, I probably won't be nominating anything in the future as it's pretty obvious you guys don't enjoy the music. There's no point in exposing people to stuff if you know they won't like it, it's not like I want to make you suffer or anything.
