I have a tendency of screaming gay at my mates whenever they headshot me in CS, UT3 or whatsoever. Does that count?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

A better example would be:

"What do you mean, 'it's paraplegic'?! I happen to be paraplegic. You're very rude "

See how that's actually rude? Because paraplegics don't call themselves "lame"? And because gay people do call themselves "gay"?
ITT massively faulty logic.

"That's gay" = offensive to homosexuals
A sensible homosexual witnesses somebody using "gay" in a derogatory context, and is secure in the knowledge that the user isn't slagging off actual homosexuals.

"That's lame" = offensive to cripples
Exactly the same thing. They're both words that, in this day and age, mean multiple things.

knk summed it up more aptly.

Depends on it's context. Never really thought about it before but I had a gay friend and I support gay's so now even if it might be funny and you don't mean it in an offensive way, it tends to sound a little weird. But then again some things you can't take personally. It's all in how you look at it.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I don't use gay unless it's really to denote that it's homosexual in someway, not in a derogatory fashion.
Likewise... and seems like a fairly old and outdated term to use in the derogatory fashion now.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

y.
it depends on the context. When pointing out at something ''really'' gay (drag queens, effeminate (???) men), you're simply pointing out the obvious
