The ray of frost strikes at the very center of the swarm, but only a rat or two is hit amidst the turmoil. This threat seems to call for something less precise.

2 damage to swarm.

The last of the Giant Rats takes a nibble out of Gabriel. His flesh is delicious.

3 damage to Gabriel: 25 HP

After being scared nearly out of my boots (but not out of my wits), I fled the room with the giant blob in that faux chest.

Seeing the rest of the ragtag group struggling to ward off a group of rats, some large, some yet larger, I decided quickly it'd be best to die with help doing so than to die alone and foolishly.

Run as far towards the fight as possible.
Equip hand crossbow.
Fire at Dire Rat north.

Fescue sprints toward the fray, handily leaping one table and sidestepping the next. Drawing his crossbow as he runs, he fires a bolt at what seems like the softest target — and misses by an inch.

The ooze sluggishly trails in his wake, squeezing through an open doorway.

Pulled toward the paladin by his divine edict, the northern Dire Rat charges through its brethren to assault him. Both Motsognir and Argumentus attempt a strike at it while its back is turned, but to no avail. Luckily, the rat is unable to harm Gabriel either.

Distracted by his tramping boots, the southern Dire Rat turns to see Fescue — and the unarmored wizard next to him. Charging in, the rat tears a hole in Bob's robes but does no real damage.

The dwarf found himself surrounded by rats, and he snarled his defiance before lashing out angrily with his warhammer, slamming it violently towards the bloodied dire rat before he quickly slid backwards another step, reaching down to tighten the straps around his calf, where the giant rat had again sunk its teeth in.

Motsognir considered diving into the Rat Swarm, killing as many as he could, but remembering the magic woman's inefficiency with them, decided to disperse one of the larger creatures first.

Argumentus, now frustrated at his inability to cause damage to the bitey things makes a broad sweeping motion with his shield, crashing into the scurrying rat swarm.

Gabriel smashes the dire rat with ease, sending it sprawling and bloodying it badly.

9 damage to dire rat north

Motsognir races to the aid of his more lightly-armored companions, dealing the southern dire rat a solid blow and bloodying it.

5 damage to south dire rat

Argumentus, for his part, discovers the inherent difficulty of crashing into diffuse clusters of moving things — and receives more bites for his trouble.

9 damage to Argumentus from swarm proximity: HP 8 (badly bloodied)

New round! Initiative Order: Fescue, Gabriel, Argumentus, Bob, Swarm, DR South, DR North, Motsognir, Slime, Giant Rat

Overkill
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Overkill is the use of excessive force or action that goes further than is necessary to achieve
its goal. For example, using a sledgehammer to crack a hazelnut, or shooting an ant with a
rocket launcher would be overkill.

11 damage to Giant Rat, killing it. Killing it a LOT.

The Paladin saw the slow human be torn asunder by the rat, his eyes widening at the ferocity of the creature's attack. He grit his teeth and ground his fingers into the hilt of his weapon. For the first time since he'd awoken in this godforsaken pit, he felt the mortality of the group.

No.

Not godforsaken. Never godforsaken. Kord was with him, and Kord would see them through.

"YOU!" He bellowed, gesturing at the elven girl. "Spellspit! If you have any gunpowder left in those mystical cannons, now would be the time, lad!" He gestured with his chin, beard flowing, towards the swarm of vermin.

He quickly slammed his hammer out again at the bloodied dire rat before him, looking to end its pitiful existence. His eyes swung up towards Argumentus.

"You! Slow human! To my side, boy! Get clear of that thrice-damned sea of teeth and fur!"

His voice was authoritarian and commanding, the voice of a General. The voice of the chosen of the god of War and Storms.

Gabriel Sledgehammer aims a killing blow at the blood-drooling rat, hoping to put it down for good. His cause is just. His will is strong. His weapons are potent.

His hands are kinda shaky.

The fighter can do little but try to catch his breath. He manages to brush off nearly all of the rats that plague him, but is it enough?

Argumentus takes 3 damage from ongoing rat effects, then gains 8 from his healing surge: 13 HP

The ugly dwarf was badly bitten and had started ranting and rambling incoherently as he fell back under the onslaught of the rats. Despite his insane babbling however, he was still standing and fighting and could take care of himself. The big human by contrast was in trouble, swarmed over by rats and covered in a profusion of bites. My options for killing an entire swarm of rats were limited, to say none existant. If only I'd listened better during fireball lessons!

I looked around, hoping to find some inspiration. What we needed was some kind of flammable liquid but I could not think where we could get some from.

At that moment, one of the big rats snapped at me, tearing a strip out of my cloak and scattering sequins across the floor. Incandescent with rage at this befouling of my garments, I leapt backwards away from the beast and for want of a better option, summoned a cloud of mystical daggers to stab and slash at the swarm of rats.

Shift away one square south east (Assuming you can shift diagonally, if not I'll go east), cast Cloud of Daggers at rat swarm.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

The daggers wheel viciously amid the rats, hewing many of them apart and eliminating nearly a third of their number.

11 damage to rat swarm

Fleeing the daggers, the swarm rushes toward Scary Bob, who seems a much softer target than the Argumentus. They accomplish nothing other than further damaging his raiment, whilst the fighter crushes a few stragglers under his boot.

4 damage to rat swarm

The south dire rat attempts futilely to gnaw through Motsognir's boot, while its cousin tries to lunge at Gabriel's throat. Weakened as it is, it only manages a clumsy hop that ends in a head-first collision with a shield.

Whilst reassuring Argumentus, Motsognir's axe cuts through the enemy and into the floor, throwing up sparks. The rat won't be going anywhere in a hurry with its bowels hanging out.

Argumentus gains 13: 28 HP total. 8 damage to South Dire Rat

No longer able to perceive any living prey, the jelly begins quietly absorbing the fresh corpses scattered about the stewpot.

New round! initiative order: Argumentus, Fescue, Gabriel, DR North, DR South, Swarm, Motsognir, Bob

Argumentus perceives the rat swarms's shift in attention between the sound of cracking skulls and the lacerations of tiny tendons. His sense of chivalry kicks into full gear, and nostrils flaring he positions himself between the swarm and Scary Bob.

Argumentus moves one space south of Rat Swarm

Without mercy (as I couldn't imagine why anybody would have any mercy for an oversized rat trying to gnaw off the toes of innocent bystanders), I slayed the foul rodent, and wondered to myself what was keeping the rest of the pack from slaying the remaining beasts.

Being next to a swarm of rabid rats enveloped in a swarm of rabid sharp pokey things wasn't much to my liking, so I headed myself toward an adjacent wall.

Move 2 left, 4 down.

Although both the swarm and the dire rat snap at Fescue as he passes, it is futile. The rogue's blade cleanly severs the rat's head from its torso.

The dwarf sighed and glowered in the still barely alive rat's direction, trudging towards it with his hammer dragging on the ground behind him, looking like a six year old frustrated with a favourite toy.

For a long moment he watched the creature. The rat lays on its back, its belly bleeding in the damp basement, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't. Not without his help. But he's not helping.

With an exaggerated groan of frustration, he whipped his hammer through the air, aiming it at the fell beast.

The hammer splatters the rat in all directions, leaving a bare spot on the floor ringed with rat offal. A terrified squeeee hangs in the air.

The swarm, divested of its larger cousins, escapes from the cloud of daggers before harmlessly chewing on the obstructing Argumentus.

The axe easily hews through the handful of rats it actually connects with, but does little damage to the swarm as a whole.

2 damage

Scary Bob once again manifests a relentless whirlwind of daggers into the midst of the swarm, destroying so many of the remaining rats that the few survivors finally disperse.

The Dwarf nodded in the direction of the large human.

"Indeed, slow human." He ran a hand through his beard, slinging his hammer up onto his shoulder. He glanced around the room with a slight grunt and leaned his back against the wall. He was too dwarf to admit it, but he was feeling the effects of the filth fever himself.

"I don't know about the rest of you lot, but I think the brawler could use a rest, hm? No sense traveling with the bulk of our muscle dead on his feet."

He glanced around, trying to spot a defensible position, so as they wouldn't all get murdered by skeletons in their sleep.
