DDR - Your favourite way to combine nerdiness and homosexuality?

Heya,

I HOPE this is in the right sub forum - didn't see a topic on this (did a search)...

So I'm just curious to find about this because I know many DDRs are out and well many of us dun own all DDRs... so by finding out what others prefer it may help us to decide if we want to get XX installment or not...

So here goes... which DDR do you own and which is your favorite (why maybe)?
*I posted this somewhere else - didn't get much responses.... can't believe I forgot about this place!!!!!*

I have DDRMAX, SuperNOVA 1 and SuperNOVA 2

Out of them - generally I like DDRMAX because of the amount of non-vocal tracks and because of the steps (currently I'm at standard for DDRMAX and difficult for the NOVA ones) - yeah been playing for 2 months now... but I'm thinking of buying maybe other DDR versions depending on what others think here

I know that SuperNOVA 1 has non-vocal boss themes and I bet onces I get up to that level I will enjoy the game probably more than MAX. But that's my opinion

I'm kinda in a sense new to dance/rhythm games - I do have Pump It Up (which I heard is more challenging + good song selection) and Into the Groove... haven't played either LOL

Jam it back in, in the dark.

We haven't had a music games subforum for a while so I guess you're in the right place ^^

If I wanted to make a list of favorites from the series, it would have to be individual songs and/or features and not the games as a whole.

As for the mixes you have listed, I take it they are the NA releases rather than the Japanese releases (or more importantly, arcade vs. home release). For a while I enjoyed MAX2 (AC), with a combination of Dancemania licences and a quite a few decent hits made it memorable IMO, second to that is (of course) is SuperNova (AC) with the impressive number of songs, quite a few IIDX crossovers and the scorekeeping on every song/step makes it replayable either until you're satisfied with a score or just wanna get your name on it.

Going back and remembering such AAA mixes as 5th Mix and Extreme are in my top tier, 5th mix for having BG characters for the last time for a while (not to mention running at a smooth 50 FPS) and Extreme having a 'best of' selection which, in truth, lasted a while.

Of all the music games as of late the only one I keep current is IIDX (due to the arcades closing from October through May).

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Arcade Releases - 5th Mix is my favorite. Had a wonderful mix of songs from the previous versions and a couple that would never appear again. Plus it had the most awesome mode select music.

Japanese Releases - Extra Mix. All the songs from Solo 2000 and Solo Bass mix and a couple of extra songs in between. Most of the music was pretty good.

US Releases - EXTREME 2. Hands down, best home version available. You can't beat a mix that has butterfly (upswing mix), Boom Boom Dollar (K.O.G. G3 Mix), Injection of Love, and un deux trois in it.

I have been playing a lot of In The Groove 2 though since it's one of the machines available at the arcade near me. We got it hacked so we've uploaded a good amount of original files along with DDR files. What's weirder is that we have this machine with all this DDR music and we actually have two DDR machine in the arcade as well (EXTREME and SuperNOVA).

As far as the home versions go, none of the SuperNOVA boss songs have any redeeming qualities about them. They're all hard as hell and make no sense to begin with. I'd recommend sticking to MAX, MAX2, or go and pick up EXTREME2. I wasn't all that impressed with EXTREME.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Damn, I haven't played DDR in such a long time.

Anyway... Like the others above me, I have to say that 5th Mix is my favourite arcade release, closely followed my MAX2 [7th Mix]. I still remember that MAX2 was the first time I played, because it was the ONLY machine in my area.

As for home releases... I've only played MAX, and either EXTREME or EXTREME2. I can't remember which, but I think I'd put the EXTREME one higher on the list than MAX.

The only thing that really bothered me about the US EXTREME is the fact you couldn't disable button commands on the dance pad. So each time you hit X or O, they would register to an arrow.

5th Mix, MAX, EXTREME, and SuperNOVA 2.

I guess Arcade is fine!! Where I live we do have 1 arcade area but it looks pretty small on the outside. The only DDR Arcade I've seen is in Theatre... so I've never really seen a big DDR Arcade (nor do I want to right now 'cause I'm pretty much a noob) but it sounds great competing in the Arcade with friends

@Chaotic LOLOL - because of you I ordered Extreme 2... I LOVE Boom Boom Dollar (went listening to it after this post)

I guess since the topic title has been changed (and it's much cooler now - whoever came up with this is a GENIUS!!!)

So right now I'll have MAX, NOVA 1 and 2 and Extreme 2 soon... I've been playing for almost 3 months... but I really suck! I couldn't beat any song in difficult mode at 1x then the moment I sped each song @ 1.5x I managed to beat them (I can beat almost every song with A grade and a few with B like Xepher - haven't tried the boss songs/the "Flow" ones... and I always fail at Innocence of Silence and some other 2 lettered song)... talking about SuperNOVA here (which is what I play most of the time)

But now I'm kinda at a plateau - I can beat about 7 expert songs in SuperNOVA @1.5x speed... but I can't seem to move on... so I tried 1x again (because I've been told if you do 1x you progress better) but now I can't even beat basic difficult songs... I get way tooo confused by how close the 1/4? arrows are and I end up jumping all over the pad like a complete idiot!

Not sure what to do... Any advice?

It's so annoying how my brother played for a shorter while and he's better... wish I had more stamina like him (BTW I'm a girl here... yeah I'm geeky!!)

How ya doing, buddy?

4th and 5th mix are my favorite arcade editions. It's what I started with back in 2001/2ish and to me symbolized the epitome of songs I liked.

I liked 4th mix so much, I bought a mod chip for my ps1 and imported 4th mix.

Though, I don't play anymore and SimDaddyGT is the now proud owner of my 4th mix.

Just keep playing the song and practicing.

Overtime, with ITG2, I thought I would never get past doing 10s and 11s, at this point in time, I can consistently pass a good majority of 11s and a couple of 12s. 13+ songs are out of the question at the moment.

And speed mods are usually good for passing songs. At 1x, some songs are just unreadable. Take bag for example. 1x = 65 BPM. Unless you have amazing eyesight and good sight reading skills, then you could pass it. To make it anywhere near reasonable you'd probably have to play it at 3x. I have no problems playing it at 8x thanks to ITG and the forced speed reading just to pass stuff... Now I can't play on 1.5x unless it's a MAX song or something really fast.

Normal for me is 2x and 3x.

As far as reading 1x, it just helps your sight reading because you see everything on screen. You could still progress fairly well if you read all songs on 1.5x, there's nothing wrong with that. Regards to your 1/4 arrow question, each arrow usually lands on the beat since all DDR songs are done in 4/4 time.

Just keep playing the song over and over again. Since you have a home version, you're really not losing any money playing the song over and over again.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I absolutely adore playing bag on Heavy mode. Though, playing it on 1x speed is just DEATH, unless you've like, memorized the steps or something. I usually play it on 3x, but I'm trying to slow it down a little. [I forget, does the machine have 1.5x or 2x?]

I'm so over bag. >.<

Since we slapped it on our hacked ITG2 machine, I hold the record at 94%. No one has really bothered to overtake it because of the weird rhythms. Honestly, I hate the damn song.

I used to be really into the DDR scene and competition and stuff, but I hardly play it anymore. Part of that is because playing in arcades a lot is kind of expensive, and I needed to put more of that money towards college. And part of it is because DDR Extreme is still the newest dancing game we have at our local arcades - no ITG, no Supernova, no whatever else has come out in the past five years.

As far as the DDR home versions go, DDRMax was the one I enjoyed the most, based on song selection.

But these days, I mostly stick to IIDX for my music game fix. There's a lot more difficulty, and I enjoy the music a whole lot more. Plus, I don't get all sweaty and need a change of clothes.

Hell, I wish I had a IIDX machine near me. beatmania is probably the only music game that I've played that I'm really bad in. There is one that's about a half hour away, but I don't really like taking the effort to go down there.

I have the US home version and downloaded a couple of beatmania games for the PSX, but I still suck horribly at it.

For me I've only been playing DDR since late 2003. I haven't been playing it as much lately. I just can't seem to find much time for it aymore due to the fact that I've been really busy with work.

I never had the luxury of playing any of the older DDR mixes. I improved on DDR by playing DDR Extreme at the arcade and the only other arcade releases that I've played besides Extreme is Supernova and ITG2.

Arcade Releases: Since I have played very few arcade releases I would have to say my favourite arcade release is Supernova but as good as Supernova is; I do have one major complaint about it. They took out all the good-cool stuff so on that mix there is no last message or no spin the disc, oh well.

Japanese Home Releases: I tend to be the really weird one in terms of my group of friends that play DDR when it comes to liking Japanese mixes. Out of all the japanese home mixes; DDR Party Collection tends to be favourite. I like it because it has three of my favourite 7 footers I like to play which is Stars, Freedom, and Dynamite Rave (Down Bird Sota Mix). I like the fact that I can play songs like Dub I Dub and Orion .78(AMeuro-Mix) on the PS2 engine. I also love the song Get Up & Move.

American Home Releases: It is literally a toss up between DDR MAX US or DDR Extreme. It seems like that all my friends prefer DDR Extreme 2 and trust me I don't doubt that it is a good mix, but I prefer those two more because they have a lot of older songs on a PS2 engine. With DDR Max US, they have stomp to my beat, gambol, I was the one, and a few others. I even like some of the american songs on that mix such as Dark Black Forest, I like to move it, and sandstorm. The fact that this mix has both healing visions and two out of three look to the sky, makes this a very sweet mix.

It is the same with US Extreme or as I like to call it dj TAKA's american mix. A lot of his songs are on this mix. I also loved some of the revivals of some of the older songs such as Do Me (H.I.G.E.O Mix), Wonderland, Kick The Can, and Only You.

The only machine we have at the arcade in Newfoundland is ITG 2. I think ITG definetely has a lot of fun songs, but I'll always prefer bemani music more. I'm only a level 9 player, the only ten's I have ever passed is bag on 3x speed and sakura on 1x. dj Taka is the artist that got me into trance in the first place. He does such a good job with that genre of music and how he mixes piano with his trance music is almost heavenly. I'm hoping a licensed ddr step chart of pandora will soon come into existence. We might be getting a supernova 2 machine in June, but even if we don't I'll be happy with a supernova machine.

In terms of getting better playing songs Tsunade and using different speed mods. I would recommend playing the songs from the older mixes first. Really concentrate on finishing a lot of the songs on DDR Max. I have a rule when it comes to using speed mods all depending on the BPM of the song.

If the song is below 100 BPM I'll play using 3x speed
If the song is between 100 BPM and 155 BPM I'll play using 2x speed
If the song is between 160 BPM and 195 BPM I'll play using 1.5x speed
If the song is 200 BPM or over I'll use 1x speed.

This is just based on my personal preference. My fiance is getting really good at DDR, she is passing a lot of 7 footers on maniac/heavy, but I'm trying to get her to play much older 7 & 8 footers. If you want to work on crossovers. I recommend the song that helped me get through crossovers and thats AM-3P on heavy.

Currently I'm playing more IIDX, but it will take a miracle for me to get good at that game, but I absolutely love the music for it. I'm a big fan of IIDX Happy Sky but I'm only a light 7 player, and I can only pass 5 star songs.

Quit using speed mods. You're only making it easier on yourself to pass those songs.
Or you're just putting yourself through hell not using them at all. ESPECIALLY if you play ITG, speed mods are a must.

There's no way in hell you're passing Determinator on Expert on 1x.

Here's what mods I use to read songs... DDR on the left, ITG on the right.

In terms of getting better playing songs Tsunade and using different speed mods. I would recommend playing the songs from the older mixes first. Really concentrate on finishing a lot of the songs on DDR Max. I have a rule when it comes to using speed mods all depending on the BPM of the song.

If the song is below 70 BPM - 8x | 6x (since that's the highest available option)
If the song is below 100 BPM - 5x | 5x
If the song is between 100 BPM and 155 BPM - 3x-5x | 4.5x-5x
If the song is between 160 BPM and 195 BPM - 2x-3x | 2.5x-3x
If the song is between 200 BPM and 300 BPM - 1.5x-2x | 2x-2.5x
If the song is above 300 BPM - 1.5x | 1.5x-2x

I don't really have too many problems reading 1x, but it's easier on DDR than it is on ITG.

Well, seeing as I don't play ITG, I was mainly coming from a stamina point of view. You build up more stamina playing on default than using speedmods.

I play 10's+ without the bar, on my feet, without shuffling and whatever the crap people do to cheat on those songs.

3rd, 4th, and 5th mix didn't have speed mods. I learned without any mods. Seeing them the first time threw my game OFF more than helped.

Using those is like having a handicap. Plus, if you only play with one set of mods (say, dark EVERY TIME YOU PLAY), you're screwed in a tournament.

On a completely unrelated note, anybody into edit data at all?

^Sry not good enough for edit data >....<

Dun plan on doing tournaments ever but I definitely understand why they wouldn't be allowed.... I'll try going 1x when I get a lil bit better (right now doing difficult-expert)

Question... I was looking at some DDR movies on Youtube (source of evil) and I saw someone doing freestyle on the game Dam Dariram.... that reminded me 6 years ago it was the first song I actually EVER saw people doing in the arcade (before I moved). So my question is - does any Playstation release have this song on it? (sry I'm not familiar with number mixes just the actual names).

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Now that you mention it, I don't ever recall Dam Dariram hitting any US release. o_o

As popular as the song is, it was never featured outside of any Japanese release.

As far as Edit Data goes, I actually make my own songs since the machine I play on is hacked. I've only stepped two songs so far:

Your Song (Transensual Mix) - Expert/Oni - 11
Anisakis -somatic mutation type Forza- - Hard/Heavy - 9

(No one really cares too much about full charts in our arcade... All the elitists play on the ITG2 machine, everyone else plays on the two DDR machines. <_<)

If anyone wants to try them, I could upload them and stuff, but you could only play these in Stepmania.

Dam Dariram was actually my first 'Heavy' song. Some guy was trying to show off by playing a song on Heavy mode, and started to fail miserably and jumped off the machine. I hopped on and finished the song. After that, it became one of my 'warm-up' songs, along with... What's it called. Super Star? Not the Oni one, though. The original, on Heavy.

[edit] This one. [link]

Dam Dariram was on DDR Extreme [ARC], as well.

When I discovered that everyone and their mother would play Dam Dariram everytime I would play, I stopped playing that song. Usually a three song set for me would be Twilight Zone, Tsugaru, and Max 300.

Wow I feel like a complete noob compared to you guys >.....<

I hope the new Dance Dance Revolution X (PS2) has that song... real curious about it - since that song and Butterfly were like the first songs I ever saw on a DDR arcade

On another note Konami (a while back) announced new DDRs for each console other than the PS3 - which is to bad since I actually want a PS3. I remember in this giant DDR forum there was a "stop DDR from landing on the PS3 express" going on. Konami did have a survey a while back asking whether it should bring a new DDR on the PS3 and what people wanted for their new DDR (that forum linked to this survey). Grrrr I should have mentioned to add Dam Dariram to their PS2/PS3 (since I said DDR for PS2 and PS3 plz)...

Anywayz other than the PS2 - DDR Universe 3 on Xbox 360 and DDR Hottest Party 2 on Wii. Those were announced on May 15 (or sometime around it)... *curious about the songs on the PS2 version*

Eitherway I gotta practice 1/8 and 1/16 arrows - still can't get the hang of them >.....< Trying to go back to 1x also but OMG the arrows are so close I think I'm gonna go blind just trying to interpret them.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
