Zanthia's Funky Swamp - 3 points. I was quickly attracted to the instruments when I listened, and felt it deserved a good 3points.
Over take - 2 points. Erm, blame me for having poor musical tastes, but I like this one. 1 point left - Oriental mechanist Admittedly the last 1 points.. I'm quite in a quandary of choosing which one to give it to, so gave it to the one that sounds a little more odd than usual. There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
Ok week.
(2 points) Claymore - over take (2 points) Genso Suikoden V ~ Genso New World Music Collection - Admiral of the Seas (2 points) Wario Land 4 (Game Rip) - Sapphire Passage - Crescent Moon Village This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
AEON - thin clothes -ETHER Oddly appealing synth-pop. I was hoping (from the interesting beginning) that the song might develop in an unexpected direction, but no such luck. Still, not bad.
beyond the dead future - oriental mechanist Percussion-heavy tracks can be hard to do; it's all too easy to fall into a maze of never-ending, dull drum loops. And, unfortunately, that's what happens here. Claymore - over take Decent synth-rock that has a high energy level but falls to pieces in its second half. Genso Suikoden V ~ Genso New World Music Collection - Admiral of the Seas Interesting with a lot of percussion and a definite infusion of Asian classical sounds. The pairing isn't wholly effective, and I would have liked some more variation, but it's good for what it is. Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter Of Dream - COZY featured in Zeus II The sudden introduction of Irish pipes helps a little, but for the most part this track is rather dull. Waku Waku 7 - Fight! Super Adventure Boy Rai (Rai Stage) It's got energy and drive, but that only takes it so far--by the end, I felt like there was some needed hook missing. Wario Land 4 (Game Rip) - Sapphire Passage - Crescent Moon Village I thought that this track would inject some much needed quirkiness into the week, but instead it just churns on and on, never really going anywhere and never rising above the level of mild build-up. If it had just burst into melody, or changed tempos, or done something... www .frankklepacki .com - Zanthia's Funky Swamp Never been much of a Klepacki fan; I find his stuff terribly dull in general. Luckily, this tune is a bit better than what I've heard before; if there's a fair bit of repetition, there's also good variation and some nice melodic parts. What a dreadful week; I was tempted to offer no points at all. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood, but nothing appealed to me at all this time around. The Point Spread Funky Swamp - 3 pts. ETHER - 2 pts. over take - 1 pt. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |
whoa, this was a strong week in my opinion. There you go:
2 Points - AEON - thin clothes -ETHER 2 Points - Claymore - over take 2 Points - Genso Suikoden V ~ Genso New World Music Collection - Admiral of the Seas I was speaking idiomatically. |
3 pts to www .frankklepacki .com - Zanthia's Funky Swamp
2 pts to AEON - thin clothes -ETHER 1 pts to Claymore - over take The Funky Swamp groove stood out above all others and was my obvious choice for first. And who nominated COZY? There are so much better tracks from the Melody of Legend albums. (Although I think one already won a SotW rank?) What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() Good morning, post-apocalyptia!

Not the strongest of weeks. A vast divide between first and second.
(3 points) Frank Klepacki - Zanthia's Funky Swamp (2 points) Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter Of Dream - COZY featured in Zeus II (1 point) Genso Suikoden V ~ Genso New World Music Collection - Admiral of the Seas FELIPE NO |
2 points: beyond the dead future - oriental mechanist
2 points: Genso Suikoden V ~ Genso New World Music Collection - Admiral of the Seas 2 points: Frank Klepacki - Zanthia's Funky Swamp Wish I had more points: Sapphire Passage - Crescent Moon Village, COZY <featured in Zeus II> ![]() |
AEON - thin clothes -ETHER: Not bad. I found the melody to be repetitive, but at least it's a catchy sort of repetition. The key change at the end was enjoyable and prevented the track from feeling like it had no ultimate direction.
beyond the dead future - oriental mechanist: An interesting departure from the usual, I admit, but beyond the novelty factor, there's not much else to discuss. Just some drum loops. Meh. Claymore - over take: When people talk about "generic" rockin' tracks, this is what comes to mind for me. Many of the guitars sound canned, and the melody isn't very strong. It's a lot of chugging and noodling. The whole effect sounds very "Megaman X." Genso Suikoden V ~ Genso New World Music Collection - Admiral of the Seas: I nominated this because it's rather eclectic and cool. Naoyuki Sato has a wide range and he shows it off well here. Despite all the different layers and effects, however, the melody retains a strong sense of the sea. It's like a modern shanty, really. The pace is strong, even intense in sections, and Sato injects a lot of variety; the song never becomes monotonous. All in all, an interesting, well-rounded piece. Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter Of Dream - COZY featured in Zeus II : It's kind of hazy, in that placid, floating way. I tend to find that pleasing, and this is no exception to the rule. It's a tad bit on the fluffy side, and I've heard deeper material off the Melody of Legend series, but this is still nice. If it has one glaring flaw, it's that the piece drags on too much at the end. Waku Waku 7 - Fight! Super Adventure Boy Rai (Rai Stage): ![]() Wario Land 4 (Game Rip) - Sapphire Passage - Crescent Moon Village: This is just plain weird, no doubt. Parts of it are wildly inventive, yet the pacing seems to drag it down. I might've enjoyed it more had it gone for less of a lounge vibe and more of an upbeat, quirkin' tone. Overall it was okay but nothing to rave about. www .frankklepacki .com - Zanthia's Funky Swamp: I've never been much on Frank Klepacki, as a lot of his work is monotonous ambience. It's perhaps a style into which he's been cubbyholed by the industry, since he's showing a lot more flexibility here. It's not the most breakout track I've heard lately but it's better than average. AEON - thin clothes -ETHER
More Z** material. There aren't a lot of artists that start with a "Z", but by the end of SotW, this alphabetical letter will sure have had a lot of exposure. A good Japanese happy-synth composition, but sadly, I'm not really in the mood for this kind of VGM these days. Right now, I have this impression it's cheesy, childish, and a poor emulation of the 80's, but I'm working on making these judgments become less harsh and categorizing in a global manner. beyond the dead future - oriental mechanist For dark industrial/drum and bass music, it's extremely amateurish. I felt it was going nowhere and did not feel excited at all; on the contrary, I actually felt disturbed after a while. Claymore - over take This is pretty solid synth-rock, which is no surprise coming from Tsukumo. I like "over take", but the only problem I have with it is that it sounds like pretty much all he did before. It's as if he's stuck in 1994, for the better or the worse. So, that's not a huge "revelation" song and I don't think it helped shed light on obscure traits of this composer. Genso Suikoden V ~ Genso New World Music Collection - Admiral of the Seas Quite nice! Well-built piece, with some good variety in the structure and instruments. Although the title indicates this is a sea theme, the music rather sounded like a desert/Middle-Eastern theme to me. Maybe it refers to a bunch of Arabic pirates in the game? Ultimately, I like it, but it has a slight overall heaviness that prevents me from liking it as much as I like other music. Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter Of Dream - COZY featured in Zeus II Cozy it is, that's for sure, yet maybe a little too cozy by the end. Good sound, nice celtic style, enjoyable melodies, but it's just a tad too slow for me to enjoy it a lot (blame Afro Celt Sound System for this bias). Waku Waku 7 - Fight! Super Adventure Boy Rai (Rai Stage) BOOM! An explosive track that is not without any merits, notably with the solid structure, but I felt it lacked variations and it was a little too frantic for a perfect standalone listening experience. Wario Land 4 (Game Rip) - Sapphire Passage - Crescent Moon Village Yay for sample usage that reminds me of Yello to a certain extent, but unfortunately, this track is simply too heavy and underdeveloped to be highly enjoyable. www .frankklepacki .com - Zanthia's Funky Swamp A very smooth mix of jazz fusion, funk, and new age music! I adore this track, be it for the variations, the sweet flute and sax passages (1:39!!!), the bouncy bass line, or even the conceptual intro and outro with the grunt sample which I believe refers to the swamp monster in the game. The mastering is not perfect in certain parts, and there aren't big breakdowns or total structure changes, yet these are not enough to detract me from the enjoyment I get from "Zanthia's Funky Swamp" and it's definite "feel-good" vibe. -------------------- 3 points - www .frankklepacki .com - Zanthia's Funky Swamp 1 point - Claymore - over take 1 point - Genso Suikoden V ~ Genso New World Music Collection - Admiral of the Seas 1 point - Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter Of Dream - COZY featured in Zeus II How ya doing, buddy? |

AEON - thin clothes -ETHER - I was prepared for awesome from the first few seconds. Then it switched up to something not quite as awesome. It was still good, but when I'm prepared for more, it's kind of a let down.
beyond the dead future - oriental mechanist - Takehiko Fujii was never one for ordinary music. Everything I hear of his tries to be different, and is sometimes kind of dark, in a weird manner. But it's almost always very interesting. This is mostly percussion, and it develops sort of slowly, but I enjoy the sound of it, especially once it really gets going. Claymore - over take - This is typical Hyakutaro Tsukumo rocking, and that's fine with me. There's a lot of stuff I've heard before in other songs Genso Suikoden V ~ Genso New World Music Collection - Admiral of the Seas - This song is in IIDX, and is one of my favorites to play and listen to in the series. But being unfamiliar with the Suikoden 5 soundtrack, I always assumed it was a remix in IIDX, and not the same thing. Boy, do I ever love Naoyuki Sato's style. Melody Of Legend ~ Chapter Of Dream - COZY featured in Zeus II - It's definitely cozy. Maybe a bit too cozy though. It needs something more to grab my attention later on. The pleasant mood was really nice for most of it though. Waku Waku 7 - Fight! Super Adventure Boy Rai (Rai Stage) - This song has energy in spades. I feel excited just listening to this. But the melody just wasn't one I cared too much for. Wario Land 4 (Game Rip) - Sapphire Passage - Crescent Moon Village - This song is pretty weird. Lots of quirky sounds, and that funky section around 2 minutes in is holy wow. www .frankklepacki .com - Zanthia's Funky Swamp - This is some enjoyable jazzy stuff. It's a lot different from what I expected to hear from Frank Klepacki. Overall, I really enjoyed this week. Nothing was bad, most of it was really good. I wanted to give points to six tracks, and I wanted to give 2-3 points to all four of these. 3 points - beyond the dead future - oriental mechanist 1 point - Wario Land 4 (Game Rip) - Sapphire Passage - Crescent Moon Village 1 point - Genso Suikoden V ~ Genso New World Music Collection - Admiral of the Seas 1 point - Claymore - over take There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |

Er, that seems odd for half an album to be ineligible...I can understand that you might say the games are too popular, but I was under the impression that as long as the arrangement itself is not well-known, it's fair game. In fact, I believe a Hamauzu arrange of the Chocobo theme was accepted as a nomination before.
Then again, maybe you meant that so many people skip Hamazu's original tracks in this album that half of it is obscure and the other half is not. Which would be quite sad, but understandable. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
