What's your favorite game and character of all time? Still weird, but no longer going
I know this sounds weird but I wanna know what game is, in your opinion, the greatest game ever created, and why you believe it's earned that title (please everyone, don't just start listing off the most popular game out there). As for the favorite character part of my question, I just wanted to see if most would reply with ," Sephiroth" or something like that, becaue as cool as he is, I'm still hoping to see a decent variaty of characters out there. I would also like to know why you like these characters so much.
Jam it back in, in the dark.

My favorite game's probably Monopoly. Winning the beauty pageant and collecting $10 was just such an unexpected and powerful twist to the character development of little Scottie dog. I remember almost running to my internet blog in tears when that horrid wheelbarrow and top hat joined forces to steal all of Scottie dog's money in their Mayfair and Park Lane deathtrap dungeons.
THAT MONEY WAS FOR HIS DYING SISTERS LIFE SAVING OPERATION... But in the end, Scottie dog put them in jail and did burnouts in the free parking lot on a cannon. It was awesome, I pumped my fist in the air and took a photo of the TV screen with me next to it. That one's going on the right hand corner of my monitor, it will block Windows' digital clock, but time stops when I'm with Scottie dog. I was quite sad to see it end though, due to the fact that the money turned out to be fake, and Scottie dog ended up dropping his dead sister in a lake like a piece of trash. Precious memories. One day I might try out the New Game + mode, I hear they replaced Leicester Square with a dragon. There's nowhere I can't reach.

Rydia's been my favorite character since the game first came out. I liked that she could learn all the black magic spells as a kid, excluding fire 1 and the level 2 spells.
I liked that at level 99, magic would just fail to work on her. When she's by herself, Sylph became a free summon. She could solo most enemies no problem, even through the final area, at no mp cost. She was capable of massively raping most of the bosses, summoned monsters etc. She could take on Zeromus by herself far more easier than say, any other the other characters. My little black mage was like unto a god. As for favorite game though, that one's tougher. Final Fantasy 6 maybe? I've replayed that one a whole ton of times. Different games offer different things. Ninja Gaiden 2's my favorite platformer type thing. It's a nice place to spend an hour. Persona 2 and SMT Nocturne both gave me that giddy pokemon feeling, except instead of cute 'n fuzzy, they were gods and demons. Persona 2 especially gave me fond memories, because I tried to create a database of monster negotiations. As a result before I got out of the high school, I had a helios with maxed stats. Star Control II was another game I enjoyed enough to want to categorize completely. Map and spreadsheet of planets with available resources. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Favorite Game?
Probably Morrowind. It had several inherent design flaws which doesn't make it particularly fun to go back through and play on anything but god mode, but the lore in the game was awesome. I loved the main quest, where you had to choose to fulfill a prophecy rather than the prophecy determining your fate (ok, if you chose not to the main quest didn't progress, but still, that's how the whole thing felt). The whole game 'felt' old, like this civilization had been there for ages. A whole lot of cool moments in that game - first seeing the city of Vivec, first seeing the GhostGate, etc. It's a tough call between that game and Fallout. I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptica, and this game is king of that ![]() My favorite character? That's a toughie, but off-hand I'd have to say Arthas Menethil. The lore behind him isn't terribly deep or complex compared to other top picks I'd have, but it's pretty damn cool :P. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() FGSFDS!!! |
Favourite RPG (not overall favourite game) is Xenogears.
Favourite character should be evident from my username. Krelian's an ideological goldmine. He's like... the archetypal anti-villain. No matter the fact that he acts like an asshole; his ultimate goal is to make things right. He's a dreamer. FELIPE NO |
Oh hay guyz, no need to limit this to rpgs, especially as the opening poster didn't specifically mention tem in his post. Off to the main forum we go!
My favourite game of all time is probably Elite. I played the original on the BBC for months and months, likewise the awesome remake on the Acorn A3000. For what is essentially an incredibly simple game, it's mind-blowingly addictive and getting the kills you needed to hit Elite status took a fucking age. God damn I wish someone would make a decent MMO version of the game. My favourite character of all time? Hmm, there's so many it's hard to pick just one. I'd probably have to say Siegfried from Soul Blade. He casually throws around a massive sword one handed, looks a bit like Axel Rose in his long hair outfit and he brutally killed his own family in a fit of madness. Also, he's German yet speaks with a comedically high pitched American accent. Awesome. Although thinking about it, I did play an awful lot of Monopoly at university... What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() ![]()

awww, the main forum? That's lame, I should have specified.

Favorite game of all time for me probably goes to Final Fantasy VI, regardless. I loved the story and all the characters (well, a few of them weren't exactly well developed, like Gogo or Umaro, but they're secret.) It's one of the more exciting and heart-gripping stories out there in the RPG world and Kefka was one sick bastard. I also like how they developed the characters, both in battle and out of battle. Each one has their own special ability that only they can use (outside of Gogo, but that's an exception). And as far as character development goes, each one has their backstory, and in the second half of the game, that really begins to take off and you find each character's motivation in their fight against Kefka. Some people say the second half of the game lacks direction, but I disagree. I think character development is an integral part of any cast of characters, and while devoting a large part of the game to it might seem excessive, it rounds out the characters well and helps you tie in with the characters. From the other technical aspects, the graphics were very detailed for its time, and it also holds one of the best soundtracks of any Final Fantasy game. I do have to admit though, I have fond memories for Monopoly. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Oh shit, I didn't know Monopoly had such a strong plot... I guess I shouldn't have skipped all those cutscenes
![]() Anyhoo, my favorite game of all time is probably the first Metroid Prime. I know, I know, not a classic 2D game, but I did find myself really liking that game, regardless of any engaging personalities. Other games I would rank up there would be Tales of Symphonia, LoZ:OoT, MGS, and Resident Evil (remake). Strangely, while WInd Waker isn't one of my favorites, it keeps on coming up in my mind whenever I think Zelda, thanks to the awesome style. Character-wise, I like characters who are generally light hearted and sort of the comedic relief of the main cast. Zelos from ToS and and Sain from Fire Emblem 7 fit that description. I also really like the cast from the MGS series, and the character development of Garcian Smith from Killer 7, although those are probably strongly plot-related stuff, and less so regarding the personalities themselves. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
My favorite game character is Vic Viper. Vic Viper is a sexy beast. Vic Viper has tons of options. Vic Viper can destroy the core.
The best game of all time is Yetsports Orca Slap. ![]() Most amazing jew boots |
I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() ![]() |
I never did understand why they just didn't go on ahead and call it "Gaiyds". I mean - it makes sense....
Sorta. Kinda? ....maybe? Also Megaman is awesome. And when I got Marvel VS Capcom 2 and the lady at the select screen told me "I wanna take you for a ride!" I was like HELLZ YEAH, BITCH! Of course...it hurts when you try to hump your TV through the RF Socket so I quickly had to stop. In retrospect that ride wasn't really that fun at all. ![]() How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
But you know what? Let's give this a shot. If it turns into discussion instead of a list thread, it'll stay open. Otherwise, not so much. FELIPE NO |
But even with all of that, I can't put it on the top of my list. Though it's damned close. I consider Final Fantasy Tactics, for much the same reason. Just sheer brilliance of story telling in a game world. Ivalice is rich, the characters well fleshed out--specifically if you keep up with the changing biographies--and the gameplay exquisite. It suffers from some translation problems, but other than that, damn near perfect. But it also can't be my top game. There are others like this, probably deserving of the title (Earthbound, Secret of Mana, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Dragon Force, Suikoden I, II, V, Uncharted Waters: New Horizons, Mega Man II, Mega Man X, Shining Force II... the list is near endless) but despite their probably being deeper games than my final choice, it still wins for me. The Monkey Island Series is, to me, the ultimate creation. Why? One simple reason: No game has ever gotten such a basic emotional reaction from me. Some games have made me sad with their maudlin bits, some games have gotten a chuckle from me, some have made me enraged with the villain, or sympathetic to them... but nothing, NOTHING has ever come close to my repeated reaction to this series. Raucous laughter. I've had friends sit and watch this game get played like it was stand-up comedy, and I can -still- go back to it and laugh myself almost to tears. The game play is so infinitely well done that you don't notice it. The SCUMM interface just fades into the background, and you feel like you're playing through a movie, rather than a video game. The puzzles are interesting, the dialogue hilarous, and the premises? Classic. Great job of peopling the world with interesting characters, varying the experience from place to place, and never losing pace. The game just has excellent pacing, like a well cut film. It moves so effortlessly. It is a niche little genre, not exactly like anything else out there, and for what it is, it is perfect. That it only has 4 incarnations is a bloody travesty. The concept of a favourite character is more difficult. There are a lot to choose from, and so many reasons to vary one's approach to choosing. Do you go on depth? Take someone like Ashley Riot? Or maybe you go based on being perfectly suited to the role they're meant to play (I challenge you to find a better piece of pure comic relief than Murray the Talking Skull)? There are the sentimental favourites, like Ramza Beoluve, Celes Chere, Cyan Garamond, or Asellus. I'm also tempted towards the villains, always have been. People like LeChuck or Algus. They deserve a mention because of how well they worked as foils to our heroes. Even when they were just a grey area villain, like Sydney in Vagrant Story, or Luc in Suikoden III. Maybe even moreso because they are so grey area. In the end, though, I have to make my choice with my gut and go with Yuri circa Shadow Hearts II. In the first game Yuri is brash, young and confident. After the events at the end of the first game (they used the bad ending. Love it.) he's a less intrepid hero. In the first game, he's an anti-hero, only involved because his hand is forced. In the second game, he's lost the only thing that ever mattered to him, and there is a certain emptiness to him that comes across. He's become something of a true hero, but more because he thinks it's what she would have wanted. I'm not saying the series deserves more recognition than, say, Final Fantasy Tactics, bit Yuri as an individual shows the ramifications of an event better than anything I've seen in a game. Usually it's "oh man, my girlfriend died. What up, Tifa?" But Yuri has truly changed from one game to the next. And that character study, of a man driven by what is essentially a memory, is very well portrayed. He's grown up, he's more aware of the world around it, and he's become a lesser man because of it. I thought it was a lovely transition. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() John Mayer just asked me, personally, through an assistant, to sing backup on his new CD. |
There are so many games I like playing alot. Like the Dynasty Warriors Empires series(That I particularly love, the regular games not so much), Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and so many epic rpgs.
But it always comes down to the same answer. My favorite game of all time is Star Ocean 2. I love the little mix of action they put in the game with the rpg elements. I like being able to pick and choose between characters to form my party the way they let you in that. I love all the different pairings you can have in the ending. I don't know, getting the endings I aimed for in the game just give me a sense of accomplishment that I'm not used to in games. Favorite character? Albert Wesker from Resident Evil. Partially because of the look, but also he's kind of brilliant as far as villains go. I mean the guy is like a triple agent. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Ooh, closing your own thread? Don't be so childish, AIDS-boy.
There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() ![]() |
Anywho.... I actually have two favorite games. One just about everyone on GFF can possibly guess....If not, I'll tell you...Suikoden II. The other is Tales of the Abyss. And I like both for the same reasons. The storyline, the characters, and the humor. In Suikoden II, the main character's sister slams him so hard into a rock face, his outline can be seen when he collapses, old friends Viktor and Flik are still fighting, the sister's fear of ghosts, and Flik being chased by a schoolgirl... In Tales of the Abyss, there is a lot of comedy...The one character's fear of women, another's obsession with money, and the adult of the group's goal to drive the youngsters crazy.... You need a little comedy in RPGs, otherwise, they're too "dark." As for my favorite character, I would have to say Eike from Shadow of Destiny. Here is a character trying to solve his own murder, and he's just too calm about everything that happens to him. No panicking, no freaking out--nothing. AND the man can carry a ladder in his jeans! What's not to like? And hangman is better than Monopoly.... This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |

Monopoly is a very interesting game,I'll have to give it that. I've never actually finished the game myself, but one day maybe I will.
As for my favorite game - Final Fantasy IX. It's the one game I can play over and over and never get bored with it. I can still recall the first time I played it and how hooked on it I was. Second favorite is definitely Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of time. I love that game! All except for the stupid water temple. Favorite Character - Nope,it's actually not Garnet although she is a close second. ;p Zidaneee as stated in my profile. I love how his character developes during the game, how he's not always moping around and depressed, and how he interacts with his friends in the game. It's sweet! I was speaking idiomatically. |
My favorite characte is from many video game generations ago. This character was the true badass of videogames. I don't think this character ever spoke a word, but every action this character did had a meaning. This character, if he messed up just ONCE he would kill himself, which means he was pretty much perfect.
This character is no GTAIII person, oh no, this character is he blue dude from the Adventures of Lolo. You can't get anymore badass than that character. He knew exactly what he was doing at all times. He wouldn't let a kings foolish castle traps stop him from saving his sexy pink circle girlfriend! What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Favourite game? Just one? Single vs multiplayer? I love so many genres, though
![]() Sonic 2 for Genesis, Contra 3, GoldenEye, Devil May Cry 3, Super Mario 64/Galaxy, Tekken Tag, and a heap of Castlevanias. Haha My fave character award is tied between Cloud Strife (I'm a sucker for torn personalities) and Dante (ridiculously outlandish). But if I could name a fave family it would have to be the Belmonts ![]() FELIPE NO |
My favorite games of all time:
Single Player - Tie between Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Metroid Prime (1 or 2, haven't played 3 yet). Multi Player - Super Smash Brothers Favorite Character of all time: Hands down, CONKER THE RED SQUIRREL. How could you not love a platforming character who can pull pretty much any item out of his arse whenever he stands on a giant letter B or gets a bright idea, including blowtorches, bricks (to crush a living furnace's enormous testicles), a sawed-off shotgun, or "confidence pills." Also, he can and will drink any other gaming character under the table and is not afraid to whip it out and piss on his enemies if he needs to. On top of all that, he manages to keep it cool even while he's dealing with foes like mutant gun-toting teddy bears and a giant singing pile of shit. Best of all, he's a fucking cartoon character who looks cuter and more harmless than Bubsy or Tails. RARE really went all-out in making Conker a total bad-ass. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

"I do not know what tomorrow will bring. I can only be aware of what is true for me today. That is the truth which I am called upon to serve, and I serve it with full consciousness." ~ Igor Stravinsky |
As people would probably have been able to guess from last year or the year before, my current favourite game of all time is Jump Ultimate Stars. It offers such a diverse range of characters to satisfy most Shonen Jump weeaboos, along with a sizable amount to unlock and a myriad of customization options available when you make a "Deck". Smash Brothers with supports and KOs and manga characters all come together in a little DS cartridge full of joy. Even if you're not an anime/manga nerd, all the colourful characters, panels and features are all enticing enough to even just experience for the "wtf" factor. Nothing quite beats flinging pink poo at your opponents while they have a bulldozer dropped on top of their heads.
It's hard to find a true favourite character that I can cite immediately from the top of my head, but the closest to this is Ninon Beart from King of Fighters 2006 (err...Maximum Impact 2). This little goth girl shoots small and gigantic lightning balls, immolates you with fire, summons wind and water, and can make meteors rain on your pathetic corpse, all while awkwardly smacking you in a gothic lolita outfit with some self-styled fighting art. Quite a lethal little girl to say the least. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
