For those in the UK Play is currently doing a new sale, and there's some pretty decent PSP games in the mix: click 'ere. OK, so some of them have been around a little while, but I've picked up the Powerstone Collection and am thinking about nabbing the SFA3 Max (at £10 a pop who can complain).

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I'm currently running the old 3.03 OE custom firmware.

Can somebody tell me which is the best custom firmware to install, I want to play FF:CC so I might as well update.

I hear 3.90 is the latest, hows the PS1 emulation and PSP ISO emulation on it? Is it stable or would you recommend a lower number version?

My psp randomly freezes on some games, like whenever i try to start Tekken, it would load up til namco then the psp will turn off then you have to turn it on again after that it will work, anyone experiencing this problem?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Hey all, just picked up a PSP yesterday.

Got the Daxter bundle along with MGS Portable OP+, Crisis Core and Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology.

Tales and Crisis seem fine, as does Daxter, but for MGS... I dunno, I might return it since it was used & not much emphasis on Stealth this time for some reason).

So, generally the games recommended in my journal entry on my purchase were Loco Roco, Lumines and Wipeout. Anything else worth picking up? I would
say God of War, but I heard it was only like 5 hours long.

How ya doing, buddy?

MGSPO+? That's just extra missions for the original MGSPO. If you can, get Patapon. It's cheap and fun, what more can you ask ><

I really wanted to like Patapon, but it gets very repetitive. Pick up Final Fantasy Tactics; even if you have it for PS1, you must play it again.

If you can find it, I found Kingdom of Paradise to be immensely fun, I really like the setting. It's an earlier PSP release and the cover art is horrible, but it's a really good game underneath.

Both Megaman Powered Up! and Megaman Maverick Hunter X should be picked up as well. They're 3D remakes of the original Megaman and the original Megaman X titles, respectively. MMPU has a ton of content, including a level creator, and something like 10 unlockable characters including Proto Man and Roll. MM:MHX has a bonus OVA you can watch to see the events before MMX, and beating the game will unlock Vile as a playable character and he's much, much different than X.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is anotehr must-have port of a PS1 game. The new CG scenes are amazing, and the game itself is top notch. Jeanne d' Arc is a really cool cel-shaded strategy RPG that isn't quite as hard or deep as FF Tactics, but because of that it's a little more fun to play (for me anyway, since I suck at SRPGs). It was also done by Level 5.

God of War: Chains of Olympus, while short, is an excellent game nonetheless and it does still have the Challenges to add some extra playtime in, plus the additional difficulty modes. Wild Arms XF is another SRPG, but set in the WA universe. Like Jeanne d' Arc it's not as involved as FFT, but it's fun and has some cool features in it that are worth exploring. If you're a WA fan, it's a worthwhile purchase.

Oh, the Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters game, if you haven't played it on the PS2 (it was recently released for that platform) is also really good, again for fans of the series already. It's a good pick-up even if you're not familiar with the series too.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

My first PSP game was Metal Gear Ac!d 2 and it is a great game. Its card based so you cant really expect the action of MGS but it good fun none the less.

Also, if you can get your hands on it, DJmax Portable is one of the best reasons to own a PSP. Music game, and one of the best I have played.

- If you like hack 'n slash RPGs, you should definitely try Dungeon Explorer: Warriors of Ancient Arts or Monster Hunter Freedom.
- Crush is a really neat and innovative puzzle game where you can change the level from 3D to 2D (and vice versa).
- In Every Extend Extra you take control over a ship that you self-destruct on command, initiating sometimes massive chain reactions with other objects with the resulting shockwave, often destroying enemies or large bosses. Try the free PC version first and see if it's to your liking, it should be easy to Google.
- Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is a enhanced 3D remake of Rondo of Blood and as a bonus, includes the original Symphony of the Night. It involves playing as a vampire killer on the hunt for Dracula. Lot's of undead too.
- Burnout Legends and Burnout Dominator. Excellent racing series with a lot of crashing and damage involved as the core gameplay.
- Hajime no Ippo: Victorious Spirits is one hell of a boxing game based on the manga of the same name. You need to import this one but it's totally worth it and completely playable without any knowledge on the Japanese language. Challenging story mode and simple control method. Think of it as a boxing game with super moves, but with more realism added.
- Lemmings, the remake of the original by Team17. Guide the lemmings safely from A to B through ~120 levels. Action puzzle game, very very good.
- Worms 2: Open Warfare. Popular artillery game series featuring worms fighting each other with crazy weapons. Addictive gameplay and has a strong online following. Though I cannot find many games with the ingame browser, you can use XLink Kai instead to find lot's of them.
- Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception is a action flight-sim with excellent story and gameplay. If you like flightsims, this is the game for you.

That's about it but i'm pretty sure I left out a lot of games. Highly recommended.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Well, I didn't care for Portable OPs as much as I thought I would, so I switched that out for MMX: Maverick Hunters.

Thanks for the recommendations so far, I'll keep them in mind for later.

This is probably OLD news, but I didn't know about this until I got th new issue of PSM yesterday. Apparently Sony snuck a firmware update in around December that let people be able to play PS1 games on their PSP through remote play via the PS3. Like I said, I didn't know about this til yesterday (might have known about it if I kept tabs in the thread here. :\ )

There's some lag between it, I guess since it requires you to have WLAN turned on and you basically play wirelessly, but I'm enjoying reliving some of my older games this way instead of having to stare at the TV screen and fall asleep in the chair. Been playing Xenogears and FF7 that way.

Anyways, I thought it was cool at least and sorry if it's something that was already known. :|

Heh, it is a little old. You can actually play almost every PS1 games off the memory stick, assuming the PSP has been hacked with a custom firmware. It's a little better for poor people like me without PS3s, or just want to play PS1 on the go.

I'm about to buy the crisis core bundle slim PSP for Europe and am wondering can the firmware be modded to play games off the stick.

Is it possible to make a pandora etc... so I can enjoy dark alex's stuff?

I have an original psp fat and battery.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

You wouldn't be able to make Pandora yourself. You'll need someone else with CFW, or you can buy a Datel Tool Battery.

^ Aside from that small fact, though, I think any firmware [PSP is region-free] can be downgraded now using the Pandora methods. Then you can install your CFW and play away.

So I just got a PSP from eBay. It's still en route right now.

As for games, I'm going to pick up Final Fantasy Tactics today. That'll probably be the only game I'll have for a while. Though also planned are Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Jeanne D'Arc, Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, possibly Final Fantasy I/II, and Yggdra Union when it comes out. Are there any other RPGs out there that are good? Non-RPGs are also good, but I have no intention of picking up anything GTA or MGS.

Also, a question regarding homebrew.

What are the odds of getting one that will not run homebrew? I've looked up Pandora Battery, but it seems that the highest firmware that will run homebrew is 2.71 and the highest firmware that will downgrade that far is 3.03. What are the odds of me getting firmware newer than that?

To be honest, I've had custom firmware installed on my PSP since like... 2.50 or something. I thought the Pandora Battery method was capable of downgrading any firmware that's out there down to 1.50, but then again I haven't needed to use said method before.

As far as I know, there's also a 1.50 kernel addon for most of the newer firmware releases, but I've never used them either, mostly because I don't really run homebrew; just PSX emulation. [Which, by the way, seems to work just fine without any addons on my 4.01 M33-2 version.]

[edit] I totally forgot about game recommendations. Crisis Core was okay [though I haven't finished it], and I've been downloading a bunch of other games but haven't tried them out yet. Code Lyoko and Spectral Souls... I'll let you know when I try them out. Other than that, if you're looking for RPGs, I enjoyed Wild Arms xF, Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner is good if you like Pokemon [it's kind of a more mature anime-meets-Pokemon styled game], and Brave Story New Traveler for a traditional [and quite good-looking] jRPG. Hope that helps.

Oh, and if you can get your hands on Tales of Eternia [EU release only], I'd definitely recommend it.

Please, please don't buy Final Fantasy I/II unless you can get them for $5 each. There's no way the updated graphics are worth it when you can get Dawn of Souls for much less than the price of one of those.

As for game recommendations, you should definitely pick up Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. Not only is the main game fantastic, but you can easily unlock Symphony of the Night and the original 2D version as well. If you like Megaman games then Megaman: Powered Up (remake of MM1) and Megaman: Maverick Hunter X (remake of MMX1) are both very good remakes with some nifty extras like playing as all the MM1 bosses and Vile. I'll also second Sousuke's Brave Story recommendation. It managed to be a pretty fun game despite how generic it felt.

I think I got the slim. I didn't even know there was a lite PSP.

Anyways, apparently the guys here at Northern Virginia stores don't know how to organize their shit. I had to look through every single game on the shelf because none of them were in order of anything, only to find that they didn't have Final Fantasy Tactics.

PSP Slim = Lite. I think they actually called it 'Slim & Lite'.

Anyway, the slim one originally shipped with FW 3.60, but the M33 releases are installable... just a little bit different I think. I have an original fat PSP, so I'm not exactly sure what's different--I just know that it can be done. Homebrew though is unstable at best I've heard, because the slim doesn't support the 1.50 kernel like the fat one does.

PlayStation Portable Slim and Lite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That might help a little, as well as Dark Alex's site for the M33 releases.
