My Medicom RAH Old Snake came in the mail today! Pretty sweet figure, though his all plastic outfit somewhat hinders the articulation (which is also turned out to be a huge dust magnet, gonna need a display case for this guy). And his vest seems really delicate, I somehow tore off the knife holster already, apparently the only thing that was keeping it attached to the belt was a thin piece of paper (instead of the same fabric at the belt). Also, I found the knife to be pretty much useless since it's thin as hell and Snake can barely get a grip on it.

Heh, other than those complaints, I think the figure turned out great (especially the sculpt). Can't wait till Raiden releases!

Well mine arrived today and I was going to post some snaps but about a minute out of the box and the figure's right arm detached from the shoulder joint and with the figure covered in a vinyl suit its next to impossible to reattach. The figure looks great but with the broken arm and knife issue I'm sending it back to Sideshow and considering cancelling my preorder for Raiden and just grabbing a few of 7" UDFs.

New Kojima Productions Report is out. Basically talks about the Essential Collection with MGS1 being on 2 PSone discs and not a PS2 DVD as reported which means you'll have to dust off your old memory card unless you have a PS3. Other topics covered on the report include Metal Gear Saga Vol.2 coming to the US and Europe, Japanese MGS4 boxart not final and some kind of major event for the team possibly a last minute field trip occurring next week.

I did preorder MGS4 at the local EBgames in Ann Arbor. I tried to find out if the associate knew anything about the possiblity of a LE or SE version of the game but knew nothing and had no idea about MGS4's release date, the preorder bonus or the beta aside from a PS3 bundle coming out...

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Little update: Konami are now taking preorders for MGS4 and the various SKUs and PS3 bundle in Japan which features a new MGS4 edition PS3 in a new colour: Steel.

Regular Edition
Metal Gear Solid 4 + Metal Gear Online Starter Pack on a dual-layer Blu-ray Disc = ¥8,800

Special Edition
Regular Edition contents + special Blu-ray Disc with series extras in Special Edition packaging = ¥9,800

Premium Limited Edition
Special Edition contents + limited edition METAL GEAR SOLID 4 'Steel' PLAYSTATION 3 40GB and DUALSHOCK 3 = ¥51,800

The site also reveals a new MGS4 controller charger by Hori and 7.1 headphones.

Unfortunately neither are available, the MGS4 ones anyway, for purchase but they're apart of a givaway for those preorder between now and June 1st and 30 customers will be chosen at random to win.

The MGO side of the site talks about the 2 maps that will be featured in the beta on April 21st along with some new shots.

Speaking of the beta, SouthJag I don't suppose you've heard anymore about how you guys are handling the bonus DVD or code? Just asking since my GameStop has no idea about any kind of MGO beta or bonus DVD and the GameStop site only mentions that you'll get the bonus DVD when MGS4 ships..

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

We know we're getting something, but we don't know when yet. I think I remember an e-mail saying we'd be getting in the MGS1 - 3 chronology DVDs soon, and I guess the beta access kit is included with that.

I've been operating under the assumption that April would be the date for something MGS related to come in, but that's purely speculation on my behalf.

Oh wow. When the MGS4 PS3 was announced in that 'Steel' color, I always assumed it would look like the old silver design when the PS3 was initially unveiled -
Spoiler:
Guess I was way off.

Also, how does that controller charger work? Do you just flip the controller upside down and plug it in? That might look a little...goofy :/.

Well I assumed we'd get the DVD in April too but now I'm confused as to whether or not we're getting a DVD, emailed a code or what. Especially given GameStop's notice about getting the DVD that is supposed to have the code in it when MGS4 ships which would make the whole thing pretty pointless but then that's for online preorders so I wonder if it'll be different for in-store preorders (which I have) or for other retailers. Japanese gamers are already receiving a DVD with the access code to the beta.

Yeah you plug the controller in upside down which most chargers are like even the regular Hori one that is getting decked out in MGS4 deco.

Interesting enough is that MGS4 preorders kicked off last night in Japan which crashed Konamistyle and Amazon.jp are all sold out. Also Konami is throwing up MGS1 on the Playstation store next month:

Yeah, now that I look at it, it's really not that bad. I'm kind of a 'pod' whore with all my gadets, and get one whenever there's one available for a device I own. I was just trying to imagine 4 of these things above my TV and didnt really like the idea, but if I'm only using one it wouldn't be so bad.

Still, I guess it looks better than a controller laying flat with a usb cord going everywhere.

Some good news for US folks as it looks like we'll be getting the LE version which includes:
  • Extra Blu-Ray disc with 2 "Making Of" documentaries and an interview with Hideo Kojima. Plus 4 chapters of the Metal Gear Graphic Novel.
  • Metal Gear Solid Import Soundtrack CD.
  • Artbook. Exclusive to EBgames/GameStop.
Source

Retail price is $84.99 and you can preorder now. My local EBgames has it in their system but of course I can't change my preorder without going into the store.

The CD info is a little vague too because it could be the OST for MGS4 or 20th Anniversary for all we know. That I remember the "soundtrack" CD for the LE version of RE4 was nothing but mish-mashed tracks from the RE movie and nothing from the games.

MGS4 shot to #1 on Amazon.jp's order list along with the Premium bundle that comes with the steel coloured PS3. Vendors in Japan are also taking orders and getting ready for MGS4:

Nice news on the LE, hopefully the edition isn't as limited as the MGS3 Subsistence LE was and is available to us Canadian consumers (don't want a repeat of said situation, as that was BS).

I know it doesn't say, but I wonder if it'll be a steelbook release like DMC4 was. Unlike the DMC4 CE, the second disc better get a spot in the case or comes in a second blu-ray case and not in some cheap cardboard slip. Heh, and wouldn't be surprised if the artbook ended up being as cheap (small) as the DMC4 CE one. Also curious as to what they mean by 4 chapters of the MG Graphic novel (assuming it's the Ashley Wood MGS comics), eg. digital copy or an actual digital comic. Hopefully Payton can enlighten us on the LE contents, especially the soundtrack, come the new podcast.

Better slap down a pre-order sometime this week.

Yeah it does come in a steel case and I'd imagine the artbook would be mini but what the hell, it's MGS so of course I can't resist. Can't say what the deal is with Canada but if you hit up your local EBgames/GameStop then give them the SKU # for the LE version which is 270209.

I preordered my copy of the LE version today and got talking with the associates there and about if they're doing a midnight release which seems like a good possibility, it's just a case of working out payroll and who'd be willing to work that night.

On a related note I got my MGS4 7" Octocam Snake UDF today. Hopefully I'll have some snaps up later.

FPS looks much improved now and tomorrow we should be getting more since the press got to play the game for 3 days to explore a new area and sit down with Kojima.

As for MGS4, i'm still waiting patiently. This will be one of the reasons to get a PS3 for me, it comes packed with so many extra's I don't believe it will be Kojima's last game though, he always keeps saying that.

That was fucking epic. I'm a little unsure on what to think about the Gekko's AI, though.

I mean, when Snake initially ran away from the first Gekko, another one jumps over a building right in front of Snake's face and attempts to block his path. Running under the newly created debris, Snake attempts to escape from this new Gekko, only to see it give chase by jumping over the pile of rubble snake crawled under. Shit like that gives me a boner. Awesome.

But then right after all of this, Snake runs a little, the Gekko looks at him, and starts to casually walk away while shooting with very bad aim, never to be seen again.

I dunno. I just hope that they, you know, really put up a fight in the final game instead of just walk around and occasionally charge you. Still, if anything that video was just another indicator that the game is a definite must by for any PS3 owner. I wonder how many systems will sell when this shits released...

I like how when the second Gekko comes through the wall he's kicking a militia soldier into the wall as he's doing it.

I'm not too bothered with their AI though given that point is heavily scripted given it's the beginning of the game, or at least the moment you first get involved with the gameplay, so once you really get into it then it'll be interesting to see how their AI reacts but I can't wait for the one on one encounters...

FYI GameStop should be getting the Saga DVD tomorrow or Thursday since they were shipped out on 3/31 so check with your local store and if anyone gets them then be sure to post for confirmation!!!

First of many previews are now up with new screenshots:
Metal Gear Solid 4 : Guns Of The Patriots Test / Preview | Playstation 3

Its in French so a quick breakdown:
  • Weapon system involves that you can customise weapons via Drebin in the pause menu but for new weapons you need to collect them on the battlefield and then sell them to Drebin for DP or "Drebin Points" where he'll then unlock the ID tags and allow you to then exchange the DPs for the new weapons. Interesting is that the price of each weapon can vary to be cheaper or more expensive given the state of affairs or "war time".
  • Framerate much improved since TGS07. Still some minor drops but Kojima promises they'll be ironed out for the final version.
  • New animations and CQC moves for Snake. In some instances Snake will now grasp his shoulder when in pain or takes enough hits. Previewer couldn't reveal what new CQC techniques there are or the new gadgets due to NDA.
  • Cutscenes all in real-time. Some controllable and some even run up to 30 minutes in length.
  • Good interview with Kojima. Talks about that he had a different ending in mind for MGS4 and although the final ending does go a similiar direction it was his team that convinced him to go with the new one although he prefers the original idea.
  • Kojima mainly hopes to use MGS4 as an example to his fellow Japanese peers that you can make a big budget game and sell many units and quit playing it safe with Brain Training titles and the like.

Nah that's for like Xenosaga and so on.

However I'm just hoping that the 30 min cut-scene is something at like the end of the game, rather than in the middle, because to be honest that can draw people away from immersing themselves in the game, since the difference between a movie and game is interaction. (And don't call moving the camera during a cut-scene interaction. )

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the ending cutscene to MGS2 was roughly ~40 mins or so, wasn't it? Since I can only assume that Kojima was a fan of Assassins Creed (using the Altier costume in the latest gameplay video and all), maybe sometimes they will take the approach they did and let the user walk around freely while the dialogue ensues.

I understand that a lot of Metal Gear's cutscenes revolve around heavy scripted choreography, but it may be an interesting/refreshing change every now and then for the less involved scenes. Still, I doubt something like that will happen :/...

The only problem with epic cutscenes like that are having to sit through one after an equally long boss battle. Sometimes you want to get up and get a drink afterwards, but instead you have to sit and wait for it to end. Did MGS3 give you a pause button for cutscenes? That needs to be a requirement.

Eh. The whole "move around during cut-scenes" thing didn't help much, since you were still confined to a specific area (though generally that's how cut-scenes are).

No, MGS3 didn't have the option to pause cutscenes, but there is gonna be one for MGS4, as Payton mentioned it in a podcast a while back. Great to know that the cut scene's length isn't something that they're changing (eg. shorting), hopefully half of that 30 minute length isn't codec.

Seeing the Youtube video, I loved how the camera would pan in and out of the default view when transitioning to and from a cutscene (demonstrating that it is all real time). Hopefully they continue to use that method for the rest of the game's cut scenes. Heh, and you can't help but wonder if the Altair outfit will be included as an bonus.

I'm curious as what Kojima's ending was for the game. Heh, I guess that's something he could always reserve for the inevitable Sub-" "-tance version. Heh and I also noticed that there's a Gako clock by the stove/sink/kitchen area there.

Oh and placed my pre-order for the LE on Monday, was relieved to find out that Canada wasn't being denied the LE.

I saw those at my local comic shop last week. Originally, I was gonna pick up a set, but seeing them in person, I decided to pass. Just couldn't justify the price for em (~$23), they lacked any real articulation and the overall quality wasn't that impressive. Even though they weren't marketed as "action" figures, I was hoping they would have had a little more possibility (ahh, the RAH Snake ramped up my expectations). I noticed that the camo masked Snake had a black vest (like the RAH figure) and the normal Old Snake had the tan vest. Heh, I wonder if Snake changes vests (color) as the game progresses.

There will always be Metal Gear games with or without Kojima. Hell he was supposed to of stepped down after MGS2 and hoped that his team which consisted of younger members would take over the reigns...but nobody wanted to so Kojima carried on. The point is that this is Solid Snake's last mission and the conclusion to the MGS story that started 10 years ago.

He says the ending is on the same path just a different result. I mean I could imagine the original scenario being something like the E3 2006 suggested with...
Spoiler:
Snake putting the gun in his mouth ready to end it and then leaving it to the player to pull the trigger ala The Boss in MGS3. Something like that could of jerked the team the wrong way and pleaded for something maybe more "epic". I mean if that was the original idea...hell I don't know if I could pull the trigger or not to be honest...

Quote:

No, his comment was geared to all the Japanese developers given the stigma in Japan where its safer and less creative to put together a budget and casual title which are dominating the charts in Japan rather than taking a chance with big budget title exclusives like in the past. Basically more Okami and less Brain Training I think is the point.

Yeah the articulation is really limited but I like my Octocamo Snake figure. Some nice detail and paint work and I've got the regular MGS4 Snake on the way which I'll get snaps of and throw up when it arrives. Overall though the UDF are a fraction of the cost compared to the RAH Snake and probably more sturdy too.

Well English previews are up now with IGN first. No story spoilers and the 4 page article mainly tackles the gameplay and mechanics:
IGN: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Preview
Quote:
Visually, Metal Gear Solid 4 is even more striking on the console than it has been in released trailers. We always had a sense that what Kojima was showing us was incredible footage, but the detail within the game itself is simply breathtaking. One example of this: when an explosion goes off near Snake, a fine coating of dust covers the camera, adding to the cinematic feel of the game. Another showcase of the striking graphics is the seamless transition between cutscenes and gameplay, many of which are only highlighted by a camera shift to indicate the cutscene has ended and gameplay has begun.

Another thing that stands out is the sound quality of the game, which is presented in Certified Dolby Digital Sound. The ambient battlefield noise provides a haunting backdrop to onscreen action, making you feel like just one part of a much larger conflict. The game's soundtrack is subtly shaded by local musical influences, as in the Middle East level, punctuated by a driving techno beat that builds when the guards become alerted to your presence and increases further if gunplay breaks out.

As I said earlier, there's only so much I can go into right now, but this is the system seller that we've all known Metal Gear Solid 4 was going to be. This preview has only scratched the surface; we haven't even described some of the bosses, radical and innovative game mechanics, or other features that make this title a fitting conclusion to one of the best franchises in gaming.
They've also got an interview up with Hideo Kojima:

I really hope they didn't remove the R2 button being mapped as the secondary fire. Eg. You tap R2 to fire your grenade launcher or master key. I really liked the concept and thought it'd work great, especially for online play. Heh, instead of doing CQC, why not just tap the R2 for the shotgun blast (master key).

Oh and here's a nice find, MGS4 music! The Launch Timer for the game actually has 4 short music pieces in it. Two pieces are from the E3 2006 trailer and are identified as the game's the love theme (between Snake and Naomi?), which some might have known already through the Smash Bros soundtrack. The other two pieces are new, and they're sounding really good. Ahhh, still disappointed that they've yet to present the new mix of the MGS theme.

BTW, any chance someone could rip the music from the Timer (look for BGM under the Menu)?
