Seems as though another Stephen King novella is getting a movie made after it. On one hand, I'm somewhat stoked to see this movie when it comes out, considering that I loved the novella that I read back in high school. That, and I'm sure i'll be flamed for this, but Thomas Jane is one of my more favorite actors out there, and I woudln't be surprised if he could pull off the main role pretty well, considering he did a great job in "Dreamcatcher" as the 'everyday guy'.

Despite the fact that a lot of people are saying that there is 'cheap cgi' which, according to those people the original Starship Troopers had 'bad cgi' I still think that this movie should be pretty interesting.

My main worry, and I'm sure it's the worry a lot of people who have read the novella have, is the ending, and how they will handle it in movie form. Chances are, they will divert from the book (a.k.a Secret Window ) though I sincerly hope that they do not.

Whoah! My favourite King story (right after the whole Dark Tower sh'bang) is being made into a movie!
Well, and seeing how the guy who actually did the best King adaptions so far (Shawshank and Green Mile) is behind this, I'm not forced to say "well, nice move to actually make a movie of it, but I don't want to see it cause it'll be set on MARS and feature CYBORGS!" or something similar...
Anyway, I don't know if and how this story has influenced the writers of the Silent Hill games, but there are some similarities, even if only in athmosphere. Though "monsters in the fog" isn't exactly a novel concept, but in my head the GAME town of Silent Hill was OF COURSE located somewhere in Maine.

The movie clips though do the source material justice, as they indeed look like what I imagined the story to look like.
Cheap CGI... Pfft... I really don't get it why people are SO bashing CG, I mean, they didn't rant about "whoah, totally cheap animatronics!" before CG was big whenever a movie monster was realized via animatronics or any other pre-CG trick...
Those things looke okay to me. They'll do the trick all right...
And, well, the movie does indeed look pretty similar to (parts of) the Silent Hill movie so far, as it's got lots of fog/mist and the actress of Cybill...
I'll be looking forward to this...

I haven't read The Mist, but I am reading The Dark Tower and those things were fucking scary in book 2 (and I heard they were also featured in The Mist).

Alegedly, all of Stephen King's books tie in with, well, everyone of Stephen King's books...and it all is either a pre-quel, or a sequal to "The Dark Tower"

So go figure.

I just saw a private screening of "The Mist" and I am pissed! Yes, they changed the ending (I'll tell you how if you want) and RUINED it. I am so disgusted, I'm writing to Dimension Films to bitch about it. Don't go see it--I was extremely upset!

The CGI is fine except for the tentacles in the loading dock.

Wasn't there another horror movie called the Fog? When I saw the trailer for the Mist I thought that they redid that movie again.

There was a 1980 version of "The Fog" and a remake in 2005. "The Mist" was a short story published by Stephen King in 1980, but written earlier. The stories of "The Fog" and "The Mist" are very different. Don't see "The Mist" though, because the new ending (written by the director, Frank Darabont) is despicable. I've read every Stephen King novel, but I'm so upset by this new ending that I wrote King to let him know I'd never buy any of his books again.

I just picked up Nightmares and Dreamscapes. I love the guys imagination.

The Mist looks VERY interesting. It seems many film adaptations of King's work have been sub-standard in the past. This one looks quite different.

Yeah, so they adapted the written novel for screen. Big deal. No reason to bitch, things like that happen. Movies are another medium with diffrent needs, especially when it comes to studio / crowd pleasing, so this was to be expected.
I'll see it anyway, so please don't spoil the ending. Now I can actually be surprised by it.

I won't spoil the ending for you Tagonist, but if you leave the theater feeling disgusted at the lack of humanity and decency, you'll understand why I was upset by it. There are lines that should not be crossed.

Stop being such a pussy. I thought the ending was amazing and I wouldn't have had it any other way. It added a nice twist to what was a pretty intense movie to begin with. If you care to share with me the ending to the novella then please do. You can put it in spoiler tags or if you don't know how spoiler tags work just PM the ending to me and I'll help you out with that.

Turns out there is shit in the fog and it's insect like things. The people (including the protagonist and his child) who are stuffed into a grocery store make a run for it and pretty much escape the immediate area... only to run out of gas. In the middle of nowhere surrounded by ridiculously thick fog and insects they figure their death wasn't too far away and decide to take their lives. Inspecting their revolver they find one problem: there's four bullets and five bodies. The protagonist of the movie decides that he'll be the one to be eaten by the creatures and to have mercy on everyone else. He shoots everyone in the car (including his child and yes, it was consensual, at least amongst the adults). Obviously distraught over just shooting his fucking son,he gets out of the car to embrace his fate and... well, the military shows up annihilating the monsters and escorting rescued civilians to safety. The end.

The Novella ends with the hero and his son and driving away through the mist toward Hartford. He thinks he hears one word as he checks for stations on the radio. That word is "Hope." Obviously, the film version needs a bit more resolution. I'm fine with the five people in the car. It should have happened this way: they hear a monster approaching. They discover they have only 4 bullets. They resign to their fate and he cocks the gun and is about to fire. Suddenly, the "monster" reveals itself to be an Abrams tank and they are saved. The entire movie, he is willing to fight, fight, fight to stay alive. Anything to save his son, then at the end, he shoots his son with no monster in sight? They had the gun while in the grocery store. He could have ended it then. Why didn't he? Because he'd do anything to stay alive and to protect his son. He would have waited until the monsters were slamming into the car--he would not shoot his son just because they ran out of gas. Also, his son woke up and looked at him as he aimed the gun. Then he shoots. THIS CROSSED A LINE. I've never seen a man kill his child onscreen in this way before. It was inhumane and disgusting and despicable. Unfortunately, we live in a time where people are desensitized to violence and don't recognize something as outrageous as this for what it is. These are the people who call others who still have some humanity a "pussy" for daring to have a conscience.

Alright. I can understand your explanation as to why the ending might not have been as good as the novella's. I actually made the same comment about him being a little too quick to the trigger especially since they were willing to fight through so much just moments before. That argument I'll take, but I still wouldn't have preferred for the movie to have ended any different.

Calling it inhumane, disgusting, and despicable just makes me think you're rejecting the ending solely because of your I can't believe they just did that attitude which is oddly similar to that of a militant soccer mom hell bent on getting all video games that aren't leap frog banned.

I'm going this weekend to see this flick. I haven't read the short story, though now I am awfully compelled to.

I am a big fan of The Dark Tower series... I wonder if there are any bridges in The Mist that cross over with the katet in TDT series? I'm always curious since a LOT (but not all) of King's works do some kind of crossover.

As far as the short-story-to-film, I won't judge until I see it. If it wasn't for the alteration of the ending of the film, is it worth seeing if you haven't read the short story?

I am terrified of books-to-movies these days. I keep wanting to see The Golden Compass this season, but I keep hearing it has been completely ruined. This is disheartening. So many childhood favorites destroyed by the industry.

There's references to TDT books in the movie. Most notably, in the very beginning, the protagonist is painting the cover to one of TDT books.

And I had never read The Mist and I thought it was an excellent movie. I don't know if you'd trust my opinion on movies though.

I thought The Mist was amazing. Best horror movie I've seen in a while (At least since 1408, which was also exceptional. And also King. Go figure.)

My dad didn't like the ending, and he had read the short story, but I personally liked it. Due to the nature of the ending it's hard to discuss without spoilers, so I don't want to say more, but it certainly is powerful, if nothing else.
