Saka, the key to that trial ray surfing is TAP. Just keep tapping A. Don't hold it down. You'll notice the second half of the course water path get narrower. So play it safe by tapping lightly. You'll have PLENTY of time to get to the finish line. After you go through the vertical loop, you're close to the finish line fyi.
I'm at 85 stars now. I think I know what SD's talking about... my James Bond moments were hilarious and awesome at the same time. Like in Trial bubble, I kept getting impatient and end up dying so much. But in the second half? LOL I made it there in one piece by Bond my way there like with the bullet RIGHT BEHIND me in touching the damn bubble! He'd get pissed off when I did this so easily. And lollin at Acer. I wondered what the hell were they thinking in making Mario 64 cannons... SD STILL HAVE NOT PLAYED THIS GAME. FOR SHAME. His excuse? Golden Eye 64. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
gg zelda. Mario has overtaken you and has become the best game of all time.

@ Meia: Yeah, I eventually started taking it slower, though that meant I usually charged straight through the first portion so I'd have enough time to waste later on. I think I clocked in at 1'18", when the limit was 1'30" or so... something like that.
Right now I've got 26 stars and I've just opened up the kitchen and Rosalina's library. Game is fun as heck, though I still keep dying at stupid parts. Also, who wants some Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack? Bigupload — 2000Mb Free File Transfer, Hosting & Backup Storage Provider. How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
Speaking of soundtracks, I REALLY love the storybook one. Sooo awesome.
And HOLY FUCK, Luigi's Purple Coins level IS INSANE! HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU GET THE 6 HOVERING IN AIR?! Even my husband's CE guide's AUTHOR said this is the hardest level and took him like 20 tries and only to realize that the power star is BACK at the beginning (like usual). :\ Great, I already had had hellva a time with Mario level. Edit: Ahh... apparently there's 150 coins. Not necessary to get them ALL, you just need 100 for the star. But damn the time limit. :\ Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Yeah, those purple coin challenges are nuts. That level in particular took me a while but as a result I've damn near mastered long jumping and double jumps using the spin mid-air attack. That's how you get all those coins hovering over nothing. Seriously, the purple coin challenges would have been a lot more tolerable for some of them if they'd just up the time limit or remove it all together.
The other time limit stages I hate are the ones where you have to blow up a shit ton of trash heaps with ba-bombs. They only give you 30 seconds and throwing isn't exactly easy in this game. You have to position them just right or you won't make the time limit. I swear it must have taken me like 30 tries or something. So yeah I got all 120 stars...:
How ya doing, buddy? |
Jeeze, how long or how hard do you play to have already beaten the game so completely? I've put maybe 8 hours into the game and I'm just hanging at around 37 stars now.
On the other hand, I do die lots of pointless deaths... This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |
Currently have 76 stars, myself.

Saka, it says it took me 15 hours and 57 minutes. However, there were a bunch of times I just left it on pause so it might have included that time which I'm sure added up to hours. I'd say it probably took me 13 hours to beat. Once you get the flow of things you can clear out stars pretty easily. It's just those damn purple coin levels that will trip you up the longest. Especially the ones with time limits. Additional Spam: Spoiler:

I picked this up yesterday and could not put it down. Played for 7 and a half hours straight on my initial run collecting 42 stars in the process. All of the "bonus" stages are so ridiculously fun. The game looks gorgeous. Only stars I've had a hard time with and have had to skip for the time being are the boo pull star race (so had this on one attempt but those mines at the end screwed me) and ray surfing. Ray surfing really hurts my wrist :/
I only have a few minor complaints about the game. About the controls, they are not much different from SM64, but there are some improvements, such as wall sliding to prepare a wall jump (as opposed to just bouncing off if you misstime it), and you now have a lot of control over your backflip and what distance it puts you at. However, while getting Mario to stop, slide, and side flip was the easiest thing in the world, not to mention very useful, in SM64, in Galaxy, you now slide for a split second if not doing a straight out very tight u-turn. I want my side flips back you bastards. ![]() The underwater camera and controls could have been better. It takes more work than it should to maneuver to where you want to get to. A closer, fixed behind the back perspective would have been just fine. There seems to be no reason to collect coins other that to restore health. No achievement marks or goals set towards to high scores, or if there are, I haven't found them yet. Sure, fifty of them get you a 1-up but with as hard as these things are to gather, why not make it 5 extra lives? I earn an average of two on obviously placed green mushrooms and star bits alone. Hell, I've died my share of times and I still have over 50 lives banked. Last thing is that one of the sound effects of Mario jumping (or him exclaiming as he does) does not go together with the rest of the audio of the game at all. Because the rest of the audio is amazingly crisp and clean and this sound effect sounds like it was recorded with a tape recorded held close to the mono speaker of a tv SM64 was being played on. It may seem like a stupid complaint but you hear the damn thing a lot, practically every other time you jump. Like I said though, all that's minor, the game is still incredible and fun as hell.

Additional Spam: And yeah I hate objection failure deaths. They should seriously just ask you to retry. If you don't actually die then you shouldn't lose any lives ever. Not that you're ever in a life shortage but it's annoying. Yeah, swimming takes a bit to get used to but it's not like it was brilliant in 64 or Sunshine either. I do like the spin swimming. Makes it a lot more tolerable. And actually while I wish there were more coins just because of the 3 health meter I'm really glad there are no 100 coin stars for every stage. I hated them in 64 and I hated them in Sunshine. At least for the 100 purple coins they build a stage around it. I absolutely hate scrounging around for shit for no clear reason. Ever since Donkey Kong 64 I hate collection hunts. Pro tip for trash ba-bomb stage: Hold A to go through dialog faster (In some dialog you can even press A + B to skip it). Also pick up center left ba-bomb, touch the far left ba-bomb to get it started, throw ba-bomb into top left centered between three trash heaps, and grab far left ba-bomb you've started already and throw it to the left overs on left. Repeat process for right trash heaps. Toss the rest in the center. Hope that you were quick enough and the bombs actually get a chance to go off before the timer stops. Additional Spam: Also, I just did the boo pull star race again with Luigi and I beat my old time of 1 minute and 30 seconds which I had no trouble with at all with Mario. My new time is 54 seconds and 23 milliseconds. Found a shortcut this time. That stage isn't hard at all. Oh well, I guess not for everyone. Now if you want a hard pull stage level that really is a race then you're going to LOVE the purple star challenge for Ghostly Galaxy. =) FELIPE NO |
I thought the trash cleanup part was really easy, actually. If you look closely you'll notice there are gold marks on the ground spread out between the trash heaps -- if you chuck a bomb on or near them, it takes out all the adjacent trash heaps. There are 4 marks, and you only need 4 bombs to clean house so it works perfectly. Of course you still have to move quickly, but at least you won't need to worry much about aim.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() |
Ha, funny, I never thought of those as markers, probably because I collected the coins out of them on sight.
How ya doing, buddy? ![]() so they may learn the glorious craft of acting from the dear leader |
Dang, Saka. I never thought of that. By the way my advice is for the second ba-bomb trash level. It might have markers too but you'll need at least 5 bombs. The heaps are spread too far apart to not do it the way I have shown you.

It seems like I will be able to play this game tonight, as my friend has gotten a copy and he invited me in to play, so I can't wait!
By the way, I found the most crazy thing on the gaming case, I dunno if you guys have noticed, but if you look on the Super Mario Galaxy logo, look on the sparkles that are on some of the letters, and if you put those letters together you will see what I found XD (Now that I looked on the net it seems I wasn't the first finding this, but oh well) Most amazing jew boots ![]() |

I am really amazed at how responsive and intuitive the controls are, as much as I've been hating on the wiimote. The cursor is nice and fluid, not once has the game mistaken cursor waving for a spin attack, and when I DO want a spin attack, the response is immediate. I'm now convinced that Twilight Princess was just suffering from Shitty Port Syndrome, because this is every bit as good as TP's controls were bad.
The game itself is really fun too, even if it feels more like Mario got into some bad shrooms and is just hallucinating the whole adventure. That one switch galaxy in the Terrace feels like one of Mario's nightmares. It also seems like someone was seriously nostalgic for SMB3. You've got Bowsers airship fleet, those metal box platforms, and even a few remixed tracks. Makes me wonder if Bowser's other 7 ankle biters are going to show up at some point. Where ARE all his kids coming from, anyway? Why don't we ever see Mrs. Bowser? It gets a bit disorienting when you're running on the underside of planets, but maintaining coherent gameplay throughout must have been quite a feat. For once I really feel like this is a game that would never have worked without 3D. Galaxy is totally deserving all the high scores its getting. And as icing on the cake, I even made it in time to get the $25 gift card from Toys R Us. =D Also, since I'm too lazy to hit Gamefaqs, I'm noticing that (naturally) there's hidden stars on each galaxy. I haven't found any obvious hints to what's involved, like randomly finding red coins in 64, so I'm wondering what the hidden objectives are? I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |

Currently sitting at 71 stars. Just did the Dusty Dune Purple Coin Star. Near the end of it I had a LOT of close calls. Had to hit the switch and run back for the last one twice. When I finally netted the damn thing I let go of the controller and my poor nerve wracked hands were drenched.
I've tried the Luigi Purple Coin Star a few times (edit: yay! just completed it ![]() Additional btw: Oh, yeah, that pull star race once I came back to it after awhile, I got it on the first attempt. Then ol' purple comet flew over Ghostly. I cursed an awful lot. Every time I'd collect the hundredth with a single second left and, of course, no time to get to the star. Then one time I got it with five seconds left, but my excitement got the better of me and I grabbed the pull star across to grab it too soon and arced around it as time expired. Many attempts later and I finally grabbed it. Got it to show up with 11 seconds remaining, plenty of time to get to it. A really frustrating course, but in hindsight, fun in how completely I was trained to treat particular areas like a kid going across the monkey bars and tip toe through the corners and narrows. I would recommend doing Luigi's and the Dreadnought's Purple Coins stages in one sitting. If you can get those two done, you have more or less taken out the two hardest stages in the game.
It's weird. Those two stages should have frustrated the hell out of me, but... it still feels so rewarding that I completed them. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I was still pissed off when I beat Dreadnought's Purple Coin stage. Wait is the Dreadnought the one in The Garden or The Fountain? The sidescrolling spaceship level with the thwomp and bazillion cannons from The Garden? If it's that one I lost like 20 lives on it. The game's controls for moving upside down and up a wall fail way too fucking often on that stage for the leap in ridiculous precision it requires. It doesn't help when at the end of the stage all the canons decide to go off and leave you nowhere to run to. One canon almost always tosses you off the stage so I don't even know why they give you that 3 extra health pack mushroom at the beginning.
Luigi's Purple Coin stage was far more forgiving once you knew what to do and where to go. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Dreadnought is in the Garden and is the one with the Thwomp. I lost like 30 lives on it.
But once you have realize that you have some spots where you can wait and calm yourself, it's actually not terribly bad. As for the cannon fire, you're either meant to collect the coin in a certain way that would have you avoid the cannonball entirely, or you can just duck. Most of them give you enough room squat underneath. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Yeah, I only figured out that you can wait for the platform to respawn on my second to last try. I was like no fucking way I can do that?!
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Sounds like fun, I haven't even got access to the last cluster of five galaxies yet. Almost forgot they were there. Hey, if beating final Bowser gets you a grand star, why doesn't that power up the last area? No, no, they need the specific star from Jr.'s Lava Core level.
![]() I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() so they may learn the glorious craft of acting from the dear leader |
Haha. Well, who's to say it's any Grand Star? Perhaps they act like keys, which can only open certain doors. In that case, Bowser Jr's would open the Garden and the one Bowser hold opens the gate to the new world. That would explain why the very first Grand Star is only powering some stupid little machine, and the very last is

I just did the Deadnought's purple coin stage and the secret star's bomb stage. Both of them took me like 10 tries in total. I was rather surprised and glad I got those out of the way. I still haven't gotten through Luigi's Purple Coins or Ghostly Purple Coins stage either. :\ How the fuck do you get the latter within the time alloted?
