Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (Beta 2)

Those of you with a FilePlanet Premium subscription are lucky enough try the Enemy Territory Quake Wars Beta (2). I just started playing last night, and I must say I am impressed.

The game plays alot like Battlefield, in which you spawn as different classes at various spawn points, using a Commo Rose to communicate. It also plays a bit like Unreal Tournament's Assault mode; One team attacks while the other team defends, and each side has a set of missions they must accomplish. Finally, the game has elements of an RTS. Characters can build structures on their own soil. I'm not too sure of the complexities as I've only played for a couple hours so far.

As this is a private beta, only one map is available (valley). It is very well constructed, and the visuals are outstanding. Gameplay so far seems to hold its own, as the fact that people have been playing one map repeatedly for months goes to show.

Has anyone else been playing this? Solis was thinking of starting a GFF clan, and I think it could be fun. (I don't think the game supports VOIP, atleast not in the beta).

I am not a premium FP subscriber, however I have been trying to keep up on this game every now and then to see how it was coming along, and that video at least makes the gameplay look just as good and interesting as the original Wolfenstein:ET.

How does the game run overall in terms of performance? Also, do you have what you would consider an older, newer, or middle of the road setup?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Thank you Guest for the kickass signature!

Does the building your own structures kinda work like how it was with the aliens in Natural Selection for Half Life?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I haven't ran fraps or anything, so I don't know what my framerate is. However, I don't notice it to drop low, so It's probably around 50 average.
When alot of action is on the screen at one time (~10 infantry, some huge vehicles, and insane carnage), I can notice it become a little less responsive (still completely playable though). However, seeing as this is a beta, I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt; it could be network troubles. A few of the servers right now have noticeable lag.

My setup is top of the line, but not bleeding edge.

I've never played Half Life ;_; (I have played HL2 though). I'll take some screenshots of the deployment for you.
EDIT: See post #1 for the new screenshots.

I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

The construction seems to be limited from what I've seen, although I haven't tried engineer class much. Mostly it just appears you can place specific buildings in pre-defined locations: usually things like turrets for defence and artillary units. You can then of course use them once they're built to provide firing support.

I have a fairly midrange PC: X2 3800+ (overclocked to 2.6ghz, but I'm not sure if the game even uses dual core), 2GB of RAM, and a 7900gs card. The game runs fairly well, usually my framerate was 30 or a bit higher with everything on high, but there does seem to be some occasional stuttering and slowdown in odd spots for seemingly no reason at all, probably since the beta still needs optimisation. But I know someone that played the game on specs half of what mine are (along with a 6200 card) and they didn't mention anything about it being unplayably slow. The game looks fairly nice, although the lighting system doesn't seem all that impressive...which is ironic for a game running on the Doom 3 engine.

The game seems interesting, although a bit hard to really get the hang of and somewhat unpolished in its beta stage. There's a good variety of weapons though, with each class having a choice of 2-5 main weapons (with 5 classes for each of the two sides and different weapons for each). You also get upgrades as you gain experience from getting kills and accomplishing objectives, which allows you to do things like sprint faster, call in vehicle drops or airstrikes, lock-on with the rocket launcher faster, etc. For some reason the beta map got old fairly quickly though, not sure if the other maps will be more interesting.

If enough people say they're interested in this (whether you have a key for the beta or not), I'll go ahead and make that GFF Quake Wars signup thread in the multiplayer arena and we can organize something then.

I was speaking idiomatically.

That's weird, I've been able to put things wherever I want (as long as it's in my territory, and not on a tree or something).

I'm hoping that's the answer to the problem; As you gain experience, you get new building abilities. Also, the retail game might have more complexity (I don't know if the beta is slimmed down or not (I realize it has only one map)).

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Is the building like in Tribes where you'd get a pack and can deploy it once, then use it (or have it be an autofiring turret) then you have to go back somewhere and redeploy it?

I keep asking because I've always liked to be the person on a team that liked to maintain a well-structured defense (pretty much always played as an Engineer in TFC).

I've also never played Tribes, so I can't answer that for you ;_;

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I've played Tribes and the beta 1 & 2. no the building isn't really like Tribes or TFC, it's more of a choose your deployable from your weapon menu, find a spot it'll let u place it,rotate to the general direction you want it to cover then after a little time, it's air dropped to that spot. then depending on the deployable, you have to paint a target with a laser or spot with binoculars. some deploys are auto, like anti personal or anti aircraft. I guess it sounds a little like TFC but it isn't.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I guess a mod can rename this thread to "Enemy Territory: Quake Wars" since the game is out, and possibly merge it with the other thread.

Also, I propose we start a Gamingforce Clan. Any ideas for a possible prefix? [GF] ?
