I tried to like them but couldnt. Nothing particularly good or bad standing out in them, but you know, there are just so many better stuff to listen to, in my opinion. =p

Pfft, nothing is better than pure 80's metal cheese like "Chains and Leather"!

Chains! and leather, chains! and leather
Chains! and leather, and rivets
Chains! and leather, chains! and leather
Chains! and leather, forever

"Guitars!"

*wicked solo*

Seconded, although it doesn't have to be Chains And Leather - Death Or Glory all the way.

P.S.: To think that some people believe Accept are thrash metal... it boggles the mind

I just came across "Running Wild"...They have a zillion releases out and I've only heard their recent 2-disc comp (which has, like 1-2 tracks from each album), so I'm looking at them a bit more seriously. I love their general style (which is good, since so many of their tracks sound really similar) Any fans/haters/recommendations/something I might like 10 times more? (Helloween's about the only other experience I have with German Power Metal.) My favorite tracks from the comp were "Prowling Werewolf" and "Treasure Island".
Dear god my good sir. I don't know how anyone could mention "German Power Metal" without Blind Guardian coming up, possibly the most incredible metal (or indeed, any genre) band ever to grace this planet (in my most humble opinion.)

Get yourself some Guardian! Their first 3 albums are probably best classified as thrash slowly morphing into power (their third albums is REALLY weird to listen to), but by the 4th one, "Somewhere Far Beyond" they are entirely power metal.

I know I'm going to probably get some thrash fans riled up over that, but seriously...listen to the first three. Not really sure there is any closer term =/.

I love all their stuff, but there's no doubt that power is what they do best.

Best lyrics ever.

Anyway, Blind Guardian made me think of this band called Black Jester I heard at Prog Archives (no similarity, just popped into my head). I've only ever heard the one track they have there, and the vocals are absolutely horrible, but it's not bad otherwise. Anyone heard of them?

I recently picked up Behemoth - The Apostasy, The Abssence - Riders of the Plague, and Nile - Ithyphallic. I listened to part of the Behemoth on the way home and it was quite awesome. So far it's not as good as Demigod nor Zos Kia Cultus but it's still a solid death metal album.

The Absence is quite possibly the best current melodic death album out and it's not from Sweden! Great heavy melodic riffs and vocals that aren't raspy and in fact go straight into death metal territory.

They're pretty much a shitty Italian band trying to be Marillion.

Bought three more CDs:

Meshuggah - Catch 33
Cannibal Corpse - Kill
Death - Leporsy

I'm sure those will be some shuns and boos and hisses here, except for Death but I enjoy those bands. I plan on seeing Cannibal Corpse with the Black Dahlia Murder and the Absence next month.

I've been getting into Sigh again recently. Hangman's Hymn fucking rocks. I have a compulsion to share it for anyone unfamiliar; check my journal tomorrow. The album sounds like kamikaze thrashy black metal. Every song is superbly written.

I checked out Gallows Gallery, too, which I was disappointed in. Weak, nowhere near heavy enough, far below expectations. I might upload it at the same time as HH tomorrow, but it's not great.

But, uh, on that note - Can anyone recommend any other good JBM bands?

So I finally listened to the not-so-new-anymore Turisas album "The Varangian Way" today, and was kinda disapointed. I really dig some moments, but then it gets lost in some semi 70s progressive rock kinda thing. A bit confusing, but maybe it only need a couple listens.

Listened to Finist's Nightmares from 2006, and really, I can't help but love these guys. Their NS Power Metal is still as cheesy, eventhough better played/sung. They're mostly covering their songs and other band's ones, on this, but it's cool. Among those is my favourite Nokturnal Mortum's Twilightfall one, On The Wings Of Scarlet Sunset, and they give the kickass ending solo all the honours it deserve. The ending Manowar cover is pretty hilarious, too.

Listening to the new Drudkh now. Sounds good so far ~

edit: and yeah, It *is* pretty awesome indeed. <3

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I have to get the new Drudkh then.

Just discovered Hardingrock, a folk-metal project by Ihsahn. It's a fresh taste of folk/metal fusion filled with chants, fiddles, percussion, riffs, and the like. I'm liking it.

Kinda stuck in a rut here.

Looking for more melo-death bands asides Soilwork, DT, In Flames, Duskfall, Disarmonia Mundi, Nightrage et al.

Something good, something similar to those.

Try the Absence, Arghoslent (as long as you're not too offended by their racist lyrics, good music however), Arsis, Becoming the Archetype, Enforsaken, The Faceless, Illiad, Insomnium, Mercenary, Night In Gales, Pathogeon, Paths of Possession, Scar Symmetry, Seraphic, Slaves For Scores, Sophia's Eye, Soulscar, Vehemence, Vornagar, Warbreed.

That should keep you entertained.

Ok, so i've started looking into some bands lately.

Evergrey

From what i've heard, they sound like a Swedish version of Korn. Does anyone have any experience with them? They sound tollerable enough, but i've only really heard two tracks.

Fates Warning

Again, only heard a few tracks, and they were drastically different from each other. They seem to be quite an obscure band. According to Wikipedia they go way back, and contributed quite alot to the development of progressive metal.

Shadow Gallery

Haven't heard anything by them, but they keep coming up on lists of "bands similar to this one" when i look up bands i like. Anyone know anything about them?

Pyramaze

It's Matt Barlow's (Iced Earth's former vocalist) new band. I know absolutely nothing about them so any info would be good.

Also, i'm just looking to expand my appreciation for metal in general, so if anyone has any suggestions or torrents or anything that would be much appreciated.

I haven't been listening to a whole lot lately, but I have been enjoying albums from Darkane, and Finntroll's Nattfodd.

Suprisingly, I've found some death metal to be good for writing because I can't understand what's being said. When I understand lyrics I find it kind of distracting for writing.

Helloween, I played both Everygrey and Shadow Gallery on my radio show last year. Evergrey was pretty good from my memory, but I found Shadow Gallery to be a bit dull. I think Beyond Twilight has better songs than them in a similar style. Fates Warning never gripped me, personally.

Anyone have any recommendations for bands similar to Finntroll (or just any sort of metal with ethnic style instrument use)?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Vintersorg is fantastic for some folk metal. I recommend Till Fjills. That album is simply spectacular.

Also check out Karl Sanders', the guitarist from death metal band Nile, solo project which has a lot of Middle Eastern instrumentation. No real metal there but it's very atmospheric.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Sup Serv. Try some Trollfest, Arkona or even some Pagan Reign. There are a ton more if you're ok with a harsher sound.
