Car Accidents

A couple months ago I was involved in a car accident. I have to say, that was the scariest thing I have ever experienced. To be honest, after the accident happened, I didn't wanna drive ever again in fear of being in another accident no less even be a passenger in a car.

I just wanna know how everyone else has dealt with their accidents.. How bad was it? And what was the dmg.

For me, I sideswiped a fire hydrant, hit on the brakes, and bumped into the back of a Cadillac. Thankfully the dmg was min. for the other vehicle and the fire hydrant wasn't dmg'd. I hear that the cost to repair one of those hydrant is about as much as buying a brand new fully loaded car.

My car suffered some dmg but it's still drivable.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

meh, I've been in a few but I've never been tramatized by it. My little brother was in a nasty accident (almost died) with his grandmother, it took him years to get over it, then again he was kind of weak emotionally to begin with.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I think that the thing that really got me was the fact that behind the hydrant, there was a ped. walking by... So I was kind of scared that I could've hit him if I had reacted slower.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I dinged a car when I was driving with a parent back when I was 14 or 15. The truck was old, didn't have correction on the steering (the wheel always felt "loose"), and I think maybe the brakes went out. That or I got nervous and somehow missed the brake.

Either way, I dinged into the back left side of a parked car by under-correcting and turning too sharply. Some dude was near the front, leaning against it and smoking. Nailed the car and he just stood there calmly, smoking the cigarette >_>

Found out that it was his girlfriend's car -- and to make matters worse, he didn't speak English. Had to wait on his girl to get out and get her information.

Well, I have been lucky so far (Knock on wood), to have not been involved in an accident in the seven years I have been driving. Came close once when I was on black ice once. But after the adrenaline fell and I stop having a heart attack, I was able to survive...

My sister got in an accident once when she fell into the ditch. But, she was good after a couple weeks. I hope the same can happen to you (The feeling better stuff I mean. )

I was speaking idiomatically.

My accident was pretty bad. When the accident report came back the estimate was that I had rolled my car 5 and a half times, but I walked away with minimal injuries except some bone bruises, scrapes, my left side doesn't work as well as it used to, head trauma that caused a little memory impairment and confusion for about 3 months and the new nick name of 'the female version of Indiana Jones: i.e. Lara Croft but in God mode' shortened to, 'Lara Croft, in God mode'... I didn't break any bones though and there were no life threatening injuries, my car however was totalled and my favorite shirt was ruined.

I had a little bit of a problem getting back behind the wheel, but I did and within the next 7 days I got into another wreck ><

This one wasn't my fault though, the lady just didn't feel like stopping at a red light even though I was already stopped in front of her, she was also strung out on crack, which I'm sure fueled her feelings of being all-powerful against the gods of red lights...

Suffice to say I'm pretty skiddish about getting back behind the wheel but it's easier every time I do it and I actually seem to have a bigger problem when it isn't me driving.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

I have never been in a accident while I was driving, but I have been in small ones when I was a passenger, nothing big, just going into a ditch.

I wrote off the first car I owned, a 90' Subaru L Series, two weeks after buying it. I pulled out in front of a Ford Courier doing 60 on the highways. Their car was written off too. Despite their car hitting my drivers side door (I had to climb out the window to escape) I was far too fistworthy to be hurt. The other people were fine too which was pretty impressive for old coots. Drove through the same intersection the next day.

Later I did about $1500 damage to my second car by powersliding it along some gravel road while leaving work. It was a totally pro slide but their gate was too thin and the back of my car hit it, snapping me back onto the road to fang down the hill.

My accidents haven't affected my driving confidence but I do now like to have at least $1000 in the bank so i have the money to cover any future extreme driving adventures.

Only as a passenger really. A bunch of bumps and sideswipes not even worth stopping for. Back in 2003 I had a pretty good one though in Vegas when a jackass decides to pull a Uturn a good fifteen yards ahead of us without looking back. Tboned that fucker good.

I haven't been in any car accidents yet. I was a passenger when I experienced my first one a long time ago, so I generally try to drive safely whenever I can. There's always traffic in my area and the majority of people do anything they can to get out fast. So I usually have to avoid potential accidents that can be caused by the other drivers.

I've never been in an accident as a driver or passenger, thankfully. I've had tons of close calls since I moved to Asheville though. A town populated almost exclusively by retirees and college students is deadly. My favorites are the morons who drive straight out in front of me from a side road without slowing any, and then turn to wave as they pass in front of the hood of my car.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I haven't had a car accident myself yet, but I've been in a few as a passenger when I was much younger. Baby baby naman, and I cried. ;_;

I'll try to drive safely here, but that's pretty difficult in my area, since the majority of people here don't like to use turn signals, stay in their lane, or obey traffic signs/lights. Drivers here are pretty fucking dumb. =/ I need to get out at some point, but for now, I do what I can to play some mad defense. :3

In 2001 I believe, my friends and I were driving on I-290 through Worcester to go to the local mall in order to finish some last-minute Christmas shopping.

I was driving (as usual).

I was in the middle lane of a 3-lane highway. There was a woman just in front of me, almost paralleling me, in the left lane. She put on her blinker and changed lanes DIRECTLY into me without looking first.

She sent my little purple Neon careening from the right shoulder to the left shoulder, out of control at 60MPH. I finally banked on the left guard rails.

We came to a stop and I CLEARLY remember asking "is everyone okay?" Jenn and Sarah both said yes. Calmly, I pulled the e-brake and put the car in park. I opened my door and I went to get out. AS SOON as I took my foot off the brake, the car FLEW into reverse.

I was knocked down, and I was being dragged at at least 30MPH backwards under the driver's door.

I clearly recall thinking to myself in a flash "if I don't put my head down on the pavement, I will die." I was aiming to let the door pass over me with putting my head down.

I put the side of my face on the moving pavement, and the door passed over me, taking the car and my friends inside down the highway at pretty good speeds.

Due to the extremely curvy nature of I-290 at this particular place, the Neon was stopped by a guard rail. The engine continued to rev and the tires kept spinning.

As soon as I could, I got up, RAN to the passenger doors and pried both the front and back doors open to let my friends out. The doors had been knocked pretty hard from hitting the right guard rails just after the woman hit us. Jenn and Sarah were stuck in the car.

Eventually, we got out. I ran, crying, to the meridian. Jenn and Sarah to this day laugh about how I was crying because "I tore my sock and it's Christmastime!" I was completely incoherent.

And then, Jim Morrison showed up. No joke, this guy was the spitting image of an older Jim Morrison. To this day, I will never understand what the fuck happened with this guy.

He came out of nowhere - he was in the middle of the highway, and there were NO cars around that he could have come from. But he showed up, shut off my engine (I was too terrified to go back and get stuck again) and came over to me.

"God is watching out for you tonight," he said. I VERY clearly remember laughing at him, while crying. I'm an avid atheist, you know - it was kind of funny at the time. But all I wanted to do was HUG this guy - very, very strange.

And as quickly as he showed up, he disappeared. I'm not a believer, but I will always remember that shit.

Anyways, the car was totalled. I had some serious injuries and was suspect of internal bleeding. My left leg had been run over (and is numb to this day). The entire front of my body was covered in horrendous bruising. I refused the ambulance.

The next day, I was feeling so horrible, I asked my mother to bring me to the ER. We went, and after about 6 hours of waiting, the doctor inspected me and said she had never seen such bruising. She wanted me to stay overnight, convinced I was internally bleeding.

I walked out of the hospital against medical advice, and I don't regret it. The bruises eventually faded and my face healed from the pavement cuts.

It was probably the scariest thing I've ever been involved in - but I am intensely grateful that we were all fine, save for my injuries.

I remember calling my boss that night, telling him I had been in an accident and couldn't make it to work the next day. He threatened my job. I had to go to work the next day, regardless of my injuries.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I have been in a couple, one was my fault, the other was not.

First accident, this was about 3 months after I got my liscence, I was on my lunch break at work, at a Sonic. I order a big ass drink, and my car had no cupholder, so I found a small hole to cradle it in, and went to leave. As I pulled out, I accelerated forward, when my drink spilled over into my lap, it startled me, and I swerved a small bit, and hit the back of another car.

Though I was only going about 10 mph, it caused a bit of damage to their rear bumper, but we decided to not go through my insurance, and I paid them $800 outright to repair it. That put a hole in my pocket like nothing else.

The second time, I was driving home from work on the left hand lane of a three lane road. There is a big truck to my left, and I am driving past it. Next thing I know, the truck begins shifting into my lane right into my side, crushing my driver side door and front fender, but I got a nice $1300 insurance damage settlement.

So already two accidents in my time driving.

The last accident I was involved in was back in around late December 2004.

I was driving up Old Shell Rd which, at this particular point in the road, was four-lane. Of the two going east, I was in the right lane, about to make the turn onto Stadium Blvd. were my dorm building was. Now, between the intersection I turned off of to get to Old Shell (which is University Blvd.), there are three traffic lights -- , one that pulls into the recreation center, one in front of the Mitchell Center (my campus' convention center sorta thing) and Stadium Blvd. itself.

That night, Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi had shown up to play an exhibition tennis match at the Mitchell Center, so obviously it was a packed house and hence, a packed parking lot. So packed that cars were parked on the sidewalk and in the grass. No big deal right, since there are cops everywhere and can keep an eye on things.

So I pass the first intersection and am closing in on my dorm room, which at this point is roughly 2-300 yards away. Pretty close for a moving vehicle right? Well, it would've been for a moving vehicle anyway, but some guy who so happened to be one of those parked on both the grass and the sidewalk next to the road decided it would be a good idea to pull into the right-hand lane and coincidentally cause me to smash into the rear-end of his van.

I was driving a 1990 Chevy Corsica, his was a....late-90s Voyager, I believe. I slammed on the brakes and, in what ended up being a vain attempt at turning sideways and coming to a halt, managed to cannonball my car into the left corner of his fender. So naturally, I roll the car into the turn lane and get the hell out of the car as it was leaking many fluids.

Had someone been riding with me, my first reaction would've been "Hey, are they okay?" but no one was, so my first reaction was to yell out "What the fuck were you thinking?!" to this guy I'd never met before. Of course, he goes off as well, claiming he had -- and here's the zinger -- full claim to the right-hand lane. I know, right? Dumbass.

A buddy of mine was following me home and saw my car and me getting dangerously within arms reach of this stupid fuck who caused the crash and hurriedly gathered me up and took me away from the offending individual. Long story shortened, my car was totaled, his was relatively fine. A hammer could've fixed it.

Cops deemed it my fault, but his insurance found their insurer to be at fault, so I won in the end. Oh, but this guy's wife was in the van too -- she blamed the whole thing on me, saying I was just a damned college brat who didn't know how to drive. Even my buddy at that point wanted to strangle her.
